You know how the worst part about watching a movie is that you can see the whole screen? Well, luckily, the Las Vegas Sphere is reportedly gearing up to fix film’s biggest problem by spending $80 million to turn The Wizard of Oz into a Sphere-ized experience.
According to The New York Post, the venue is in talks with Warner Bros. Discovery to adapt the 1939 classic into a format that could be screened within the state-of-the-art, all-encompassing, LED-covered arena. In addition to expanding the visuals, the process would cut the film’s runtime from 102 minutes to 80. The whole production would likely cost around $80 million.

While the price tag seems high, an anonymous source explained to The New York Post that the venue makes substantially more profit on original content than concerts. For example, should the Wizard of Oz deal go through, Warner Bros. Discovery will receive about 5% of the gross profit,...

The main attraction at Sphere in Las Vegas is usually what happens inside the cutting edge venue, but on the Fourth of July there will be plenty to see and hear on the outside.

It may not be too much of an exaggeration to say that Jim Henson came up with the concept for an immersive video dome long before Sphere bubbled up in Las Vegas.
In the mid-1960s he developed an idea for a nightclub he called Cyclia – “the entertainment experience of the future” – that would feature crystal panels throughout the ceiling, floor and walls onto which films would be projected.
“Once an hour, a woman in a white leotard would rise from a pedestal in the center of the floor to have film projected on her body as she danced,” writes author Brian Jay Jones in Jim Henson: A Biography.
For better or worse, the psychedelia-inspired concept never became a reality. But it’s an example of the restless imagination that propelled Henson throughout his life. The incredible range of Henson’s creative urges come into focus in Ron Howard’s documentary Jim Henson Idea Man,...

A large portion of the Fallout franchise’s appeal is its unique blend of serious topics, such as war, power, and responsibility, and utterly bizarre elements like Elvis Presley impersonators being a genuine faction and neo-cultists worshiping nuclear bombs. This inherent silliness in the otherwise utterly cursed world made Fallout into what it is today, and it’s infectious — as shown by fans’ most recent real-life shenanigans.
Fallout Fans Invest In the Goofiest Idea
Following the resurgence in Fallout’s popularity following the overwhelming success of Prime Video’s recent TV show, Fallout fans decided it was time to make a statement in the real world, too. The method they chose is ridiculous in every way: they decided to hijack the notorious Las Vegas Sphere to display an image.

So we saw the 1st project of the Las Vegas Sphere, which is ‘Postcard from Earth’ directed and filmed by Darren Aronofsky on the Big Sky huge format 316MP18K camera. Defining it as an ‘IMAX on steroids’ would be an understatement.
Behind the scenes of Postcard from Earth. The Big Sky camera Sphere=IMAX on steroids
As fans of the huge canvas (=IMAX!), one of the first things we did when staying in Vegas was to go see the Sphere. YMCinema was among the first that write about this very special medium. Before waiting for a movie on it, we defined it as IMAX on steroids. However, after watching Darren Aronofsky’s Postcard from Earth, we can conclude that this definition is an understatement of this whole insane experience. The Sphere is not just a giant screen, but much more than that. Proportionally, it’s X20 the size of the largest IMAX.

Drew Carey isn’t the same man he was before he attended his first Phish concert. The psychedelic rock band’s shows are trippy enough on their own, but they recently completed a run of shows at the new Las Vegas Sphere venue, a wholly immersive location with LED screens for walls. That twisted combination triggered a rebirth in the comedian. (And Phish thanked him for it.)

Any alternative comedy fan knows that Adult Swim’s April Fool’s Day programming is must-see television. The unabashedly weird late night network has turned messing with viewers into an annual tradition, often dropping buzzy new premieres in unexpected ways (like airing the entire “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” movie in a deliberately unwatchable picture-in-picture format) or replacing its existing programming with nonsensical content (like a 2021 stunt in which it satirically rebranded itself as a pre-school channel known as Adult Swim Jr.). Fans have come to expect a lot of Adult Swim on the internet’s least favorite holiday, and 2024 saw the network deliver one of its most viral triumphs to date.
One of the most anticipated shows on Adult Swim’s upcoming slate is Season 2 of “Smiling Friends,” Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack’s animated series about two mid-level employees at a company that promises to cheer up any sad...

I find it ironic how despite existing on a planet where pretty much every living thing originated in the ocean, one of humanity’s most widespread fears is thalassophobia – the fear of the deep ocean. Whether it’s some form of genetic memory that continues to haunt our species or a natural reaction to witnessing one of the deadliest ecosystems in the world, it’s no surprise storytellers have been taking advantage of this fear for millennia.
And while Jaws obviously dominates the conversation when it comes to underwater horror in film, there are still some intrepid filmmakers that dare to explore other kinds of sea-borne thrills. U2 wrapped the inaugural residency at Las Vegas’ $2.3 billion technical and visual marvel Sphere this weekend, closing out a 40-show run that started in September. Fittingly, the legendary band did so by bringing things full circle.
The shows commemorated one of U2’s most successful records, the chart-topping 1991 release Achtung Baby, played in its entirety with selected tracks from other U2 efforts over the years. To further honor the album, U2 bandmates Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Bram van den Berg (sitting in during the residency for an ailing Larry Mullen Jr.) welcomed Achtung Baby producer Daniel Lanois to the stage Saturday night to play guitar and sing backup on the track “One.”
“There would be no Achtung Baby without Daniel Lanois,” Bono said in welcoming him up the back stairs with a request to the audience. “Show him your light,” and they did by holding up smartphone flashbulbs in a beautiful scene.

Insofar as calling out disingenuous-seeming celebrities goes, Bono is pretty low-hanging fruit. But that hasn’t stopped Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters from lashing out at the U2 frontman in a recent interview, calling him an “enormous shit” for his support of Israel during the nation’s ongoing conflict with Hamas and occupation of Palestine.
The comments came in a recent discussion between Waters and Al Jazeera, in which the Pink Floyd songsmith reaffirmed his condemnation of Israel’s policy towards Palestine, and emphasized the importance of speaking out against war-mongering politics. When asked what he would say to artists who’ve remained quiet during this time, Waters turned his ire towards Bono.
“Anybody who knows Bono should go and pick him up by his ankles and shake him until he stops being an enormous shit,” Waters said, referring to a recent U2 performance at the Sphere where Bono expressed...

The latest attraction (?) to hit the Sphere in Las Vegas is an anti-abortion activist, who was arrested Wednesday, Feb. 7, after climbing to the top of the venue.
Las Vegas police confirmed the climber had been arrested around 11:30 a.m. local time after responding to reports of “an individual scaling a building near the 200 block of Sands Avenue.” The Lvmpd later identified the climber as 24-year-old Maison DesChamps, who nicknamed himself “Pro-Life Spider-Man” and seems to do this thing a lot.
Now he's trying to figure out how to get back down pic.

With her four Album-Of-The-Year Grammys, Taylor Swift wasn’t the only person to make history because Irish rock band U2 also did their share of history-making.
On Sunday, U2 performed for the Grammys. This was their first time in six years performing for the awards show, but that’s not why this particular show was historical. The Grammys were held in Santa Monica, California, but U2 was in Las Vegas. Instead of going to the awards show in person, they televised their performance live from the Sphere.
This was a first for the Las Vegas stadium.
During their performance, U2 sang “Atomic City,” and sang for their audience as if they were in the same room.
Their Las Vegas residency will be ending soon, though, with only ten shows left. Their last show is set for March 2.

The 2024 Grammys will inspire a good deal of next-day debate among viewers. And that debate will be over: Which was the more moving comeback performance, Tracy Chapman’s or Joni Mitchell’s?
Life is good — and awards shows better than they have a right to be — when the hot post-telecast topic is which legend most tugged at our heartstrings with an unexpected return to the television spotlight. A huge reason why the 66th annual show will likely be considered the best Grammys in several years is the one-two punch of Mitchell and Chapman — the two artists the world was most eager to see come back from distressingly long sabbaticals. Exec producer Ben Winston’s success in landing both in one year provided a level of sentiment unlikely to be matched in any Grammys telecast soon, short of the producers convincing Bobbie Gentry she needs to un-retire and do the show,...

Dead & Company’s “final tour” wasn’t the end of the road for the Grateful Dead offshoot, as the John Mayer-featuring band has confirmed they’ll reconvene this spring for a lengthy residency at Las Vegas’ Sphere.
The group — featuring Dead legends Bob Weir and Mickey Hart alongside Mayer, bassist Oteil Burbridge, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, and drummer Jay Lane — previously announced their final tour in 2023, culminating with a pair of hometown gigs in San Francisco.

The Msg Sphere in Las Vegas is getting a makeover for Netflix‘s release of Zack Snyder’s new sci-fi epic Rebel Moon. The massive dome, equipped with 1.2 million LED lights, is consistently making headlines thanks to several clever promos taking advantage of the display’s visibility in America’s Adult Disneyland. Snyder’s films are always an event for his dedicated fanbase, and Netflix is sparing no expense to promote the filmmaker’s Star Wars-like franchise starter.
The Rebel Moon Msg Sphere display features Jimmy, a character from Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire, voiced by Anthony Hopkins and played by Dustin Ceithamer. Jc-1435, known more simply as Jimmy, was a sentient machine that, centuries ago, defended a since-slain king as part of the Mechanics Miltarium. As the promo plays across the gargantuan structure, Jimmy surveys the Divorce Capitol of the World before reaching out to crowds with his mechanical hand.

Editor Jennifer Lame’s work has appeared on many of the world’s largest screens this year. Over the summer, her second movie with director Christopher Nolan, his historical epic Oppenheimer, for Universal, had moviegoers scrambling for tickets to Imax’s large-format theaters. And in October, the Lame-edited Postcard From Earth, from director Darren Aronofsky, became the first movie to debut at the newly opened Sphere in Las Vegas.
Speaking to the success of Nolan’s drama about the father of the atomic bomb, Lame says, “I really enjoy cutting people in rooms talking. When I first read the script, I was ripping through the pages. For me as an editor, I want to replicate that experience when I get the footage.” On the alternating use of color and black-and-white, she says that Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema created a palette where, generally, color images represent the perspective of...

London mayor Sadiq Khan has shot down plans for a local venue identical to Las Vegas’ new Msg Sphere, The Standard reports.
After Madison Square Garden Entertainment opened the doors to their $2.3 billion sphere in September, the company was keen on making Stratford, London the next location for one of its ultra-futuristic, high-tech domes. But Khan rejected the proposal, reportedly citing the potential light pollution, whopping electricity bills, and threat to local historical sites.
“London is open to investment from around the world and Sadiq wants to see more world-class, ambitious, innovative entertainment venues in our city,” a representative told The Standard. “But as part of looking at the planning application for the Msg Sphere, the Mayor has seen independent evidence that shows the current proposals would result in an unacceptable negative impact on local residents.”

Beyoncé may be the next artist to stage a residency at the Msg Sphere in Las Vegas.
According to the New York Post, Beyoncé is in talks with the executive chairman of Msg Networks, James Dolan, about producing a $10-million-dollar stage show for the venue in 2024. The pop star is said to have already toured the venue with her manager and mom, Tina Knowles, and her husband, Jay-Z.
Beyoncé’s residency at the new venue would come after U2’s ongoing “U2:uv Achtung Baby” residency, which recently welcomed Lady Gaga for a guest performance, and was extended into February 2024.

John Malone-owned Liberty Media is revving up for Formula One’s landmark race on the Las Vegas strip set to unspool with fanfare next weekend.
Formula One, a promoter of the race, and owed by Liberty, has been prepping the Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix for a year, building a 3.8-mile track (6.2 kilometers) that starts at 10 Pt Saturday after a weekend of practice and qualifying sessions. It airs on ESPN.
Liberty leased Jim Dolan’s new Las Vegas Sphere, inside and out — so no U2 that weekend. Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, the Los Angeles premiere of Walt Disney Animation’s latest film “Wish” on Wednesday night was set to be a star-free affair — well, save for the literal star on which the movie is based.
But just before 5 p.m., the union announced that, after 118 days, the strike would come to an end as of 12:01 a.m. Pt on Thursday.
Of course, that meant the animated movie’s cast — including Oscar winner Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine — weren’t allowed to make a quick change into their red carpet finest and hustle over to the El Capitan Theatre for a screening set to begin at 7 p.m., but the mood was jubilant nonetheless.
With the film serving as a celebration of Disney’s 100th anniversary, the studio pulled out all the stops for the pre-premiere party on Hollywood Blvd., launching a “Wish” drone show in...

For those who are not attending tonight’s The Marvels premiere in Las Vegas, Goose — the cat-like alien creature that appeared in Captain Marvel and returns in The Marvels — will tower over the city’s skyline on the exterior of the recently-opened Sphere.
The promo is a collaboration between software developer Autodesk and Marvel, and begins with Goose in its cat form, before transforming with her detailed tentacles on full display. It comes ahead of The Marvels‘s Nov. 10 release in theaters.
Sphere, Las Vegas’ newest entertainment venue, boasts an exterior coated with a record 580,000-square-foot 16K LED display, while its interior features a record 160,000 square-foot 16K LED display.
The Autodesk/Marvel promo was created by visual effects studio The Mill, using Autodesk Maya 3D software (which is widely used by VFX companies) for designing, lighting, rigging and animating the Goose character. It was rendered with Autodesk’s Arnold software.

If a Cosm venue is coming to your city soon, you’ll be able to watch top professional sports from TNT in a way you’ve never seen before.
If you’ve ever seen the Las Vegas Sphere in action, you know the power of an immersive media experience. Cosm arenas won’t be quite as gaudy or pronounced when they are up and running, but they do aim to provide a similar “shared reality” experience that bridges the virtual and physical worlds through Cosm’s pioneered technology and 87-foot diameter LED domes.
Cosm has struck a deal with TNT to offer Turner Sports games like NBA, NHL, and U.S. Soccer contests at its arenas. The company has a similar agreement in place with NBA League Pass, which was ironed out in February. Turner Sports are available at no extra cost to Max subscribers until Feb. 29, 2024. 7-Day Free Trial...

Nicholas Simon is busier than ever. The Thailand-based American producer has had a very productive 2023 thus far with all the various projects he’s been involved in via his production services company Indochina Productions making their mark. Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2: The Trench did solid business at the global box office, Gareth Edwards’ The Creator became a hot topic in the industry due to its frugal budget and stunning use of real-life locations and VFX and Darren Aronofsky’s Postcard from Earth has wowed the crowds as the first film specifically made for the new $2.3 billion Sphere in Las Vegas.
After a tough few years for Asian film and TV production due to Covid, Simon sees the industry ramping back up in the region, attracted by proactive government incentives in places like Thailand and Japan, but also continued spending by the likes of Netflix, Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video.

Darren Aronofsky’s Sphere film, “Postcard From Earth,” is responsible for establishing all kinds of historic cinematic firsts — like the fact that it is the only movie ever to be released in 18K resolution on a screen that spans 160,000 square feet.
But movie buffs will particularly enjoy one first that doesn’t fully reveal itself until the very last 90 seconds or so of the 50-minute running time, in the massive Las Vegas dome where the film just premiered.
The end credits begin appearing in the middle of the screen, as one would expect — or at least in what counts as the middle, if your field of vision is trained forward and not skyward. And then the credits expand out from there, bit by bit, until a substantial portion of the LED screen is filled by the entire list of names of people who worked on “Postcard From Earth,” all at once.

“There are 500,000 gigabytes of data that we’re about to flood you with in the next 50 minutes. We don’t know what that’s going to do to someone’s brain.”
With those opening words to the 5,000-plus in attendance this past Friday night, acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky unveiled his new film “Postcard From Earth” at the new Las Vegas venue, the Sphere.
“Film” is the wrong word, of course, for this awe inspiring, spherical $2.3 billion new canvas that stands 366 feet tall and features the highest resolution LED screens on the planet, both inside and out. Rather, “Postcard From Earth” is a multi-sensory cinematic experience that breaks not just new ground, but every ground possible — just as the Sphere itself did when construction first began in 2019.

While U2’s series of shows at The Sphere in Las Vegas has thusfar been notable for the brilliant display of technology that the building allows, the band this weekend took a beat to remind those in attendance of the power of music — and human connection.
With the screen around him black, Bono mentioned the violence over the weekend in the Middle East, focusing specifically on the hundreds of kids who were killed or kidnapped at the Nova music festival in the desert, calling them “our kind of people, music people. Playful.”
He continued: “In the light of what’s happened in Israel and Gaza, a song about non-violence seems somewhat ridiculous, even laughable, but our prayers have always been for peace and for non-violence… But our hearts and our anger, you know where that’s pointed. So sing with us… and those beautiful kids at that music festival…”

When it comes to how big a movie experience can get, Sphere has answered that question once and for all: The sky is the limit. The first film to play in the enormous, immersive new space in Las Vegas, Darren Aronofsky’s “Postcard From Earth,” has plenty of blue-screen, so to speak — that is, vast skies that stretch to fill the dome that towers 366 feet over the venue’s floor level. The 50-minute movie takes you into the reaches of space, too, with a wrap-around science-fiction narrative that is apropos for Sphere’s wrap-around screen. But “let’s get small” is an operative motif, too, as the proprietary Big Sky cameras zoom in on objects as tiny as a praying mantis.
Aronofsky’s films always have a lot more on their minds than bedazzlement, and “Postcard From Earth” is no exception, as it turns out the journey by a pair...

The long-awaited opening for the Sphere in Las Vegas has come. U2 performed over the weekend playing at the debut of the stadium on the opening night of their tour U2: Uv Achtung Baby Live at Sphere.
The band performed many of their famous songs, drawing inspiration for their setlist from their album Achtung Baby. They played their songs “Zoo Station,” “Tryin’ To Throw Your Arms Around the World” and “So Cruel.” They will continue their tour until December 16 with 24 more shows to come.
The visuals have been described as similar to an IMAX theater movie. The Sphere was created by Madison Square Garden Entertainment and is currently the largest spherical structure in the world, taking up two blocks and is taller than the length of a football field. It includes amenities such as the highest and largest resolution LED screen in the world and covers the entire stadium.

It looked like a typical U2 outdoor concert: Two helicopters zoomed through the starlit sky before producing spotlights over a Las Vegas desert and frontman Bono, who kneeled to the ground while singing the band’s 2004 hit “Vertigo”.
This scene may seem customary, but the visuals were created by floor-to-ceiling graphics inside the immersive Sphere. It was one of the several impressive moments during U2’s “Uv Achtung Baby” residency launch show at the high-tech, globe-shaped venue, which opened for the first time Friday night.
The legendary rock band, which has won 22 Grammys, performed for two hours inside the massive, state-of-the-art spherical venue with crystal-clear audio. Throughout the night, there were a plethora of attractive visuals — including kaleidoscope images, a burning flag and Las Vegas’ skyline, taking the more than 18,000 attendees on U2’s epic musical journey.

In a preview of an experience we’ll all be likely hearing a lot about in coming months, Darren Aronofsky has posted the first video from inside The Sphere in Las Vegas, and it’s pretty impressive.
For those who don’t know, the Sphere is billed by Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp., which built it, as a “next- generation entertainment medium,” with a screen the size of four football fields that wraps up, over, and around the audience and promises the highest resolution LED on earth. Oh, and there’s seating for about 17,000.
Aronofsky’s purpose-made film Postcard From Earth will debut on October 6, a little over a week after U2 opens the the venue.
Here’s how Msg describes the film and the experience: “Part sci-fi story, part nature documentary, Postcard From Earth takes you on a journey from the Antarctic,...

Ever since the Beatles first crossed the Atlantic, in 1964, major concerts have largely taken place at venues built for sports, even though that often means poor sight lines for many fans, and less-than-optimal sound for most everybody. But a new era of live entertainment begins in late September, when U2 christen the “Sphere” in Las Vegas. The 366-foot-tall, 516-foot-wide geometric shape near the Venetian hotel completely reinvents every aspect of the rock-concert experience from the ground up, and is the culmination of seven years of work, with a budget that reportedly swelled beyond $2 billion.

While most of the film industry is fighting to get their content in front of as many eyes as possible, one filmmaker is taking the scarcity model to heart. Darren Aronofsky, whose last feature was the one-location drama The Whale, is putting the finishing touches on his next film, Postcard from Earth, which will only be available to view in one theater on Earth.
The venue in question is Msg Sphere, set to open in Las Vegas this fall and feature an immersive screening experience, along with concerts and residencies. Featuring a 16K LED screen and a beamforming spatial audio system––both the largest of their kind on the planet––the 160K square foot venue also features 4D experiences with haptic seats and environmental effects, and can house 10,000-20,000 people depending on the set-up.
As for Aronofsky’s film, it was shot by longtime collaborator Matthew Libatique as well as Andrew Shulkin,...

Director Darren Aronofsky — whose credits include Black Swan, The Wrestler and The Whale — will next premiere the first immersive production made for the Msg Sphere, the uniquely constructed, sphere-shaped venue that opens this fall in Las Vegas. In his first interview about the inventive project, Aronofsky confirmed that he created, directed and produced Postcard From Earth and shared new details about the production and his view on the potential of the Sphere with The Hollywood Reporter.
“At its best, cinema is an immersive medium that transports the audience out of their regular life, whether that’s into fantasy and escapism, another place and time, or another person’s subjective experience. The Sphere is an attempt to dial up that immersion,” Aronofsky says.
The anticipated Las Vegas Sphere — whose construction is expected to cost $2.175 billion when completed — features a 160,000-square-foot, 16K-by-16K wraparound LED display, custom spatial audio system and 4D...
