Paramount’s prequel A Quiet Place: Day One is in a closer-than-expected race with Pixar’s reigning champ Inside Out 2 for the weekend box office crown, while Kevin Costner’s pricey Western Horizon: An American Saga is being left in the dust
The third A Quiet Place movie won Friday with an estimated $22.5 million, putting it on course for a domestic debut of $53 million to $55 million, the best of the franchise for a three-day number. Heading into the weekend, the sci-fi horror thriller was tracking to open to $40 million-plus, considering franchise creator John Krasinski didn’t direct this time; nor did Emily Blunt star.
Instead, Michael Sarnoski (Pig) was brought on to helm Day One, based on a story he and Krasinski came up with together. Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn star in the $70 million pic, which boasts generally strong reviews and a B+ CinemaScore, a good grade for a horror pic.

Marvel isn’t holding back when it comes to fan service in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’—the studio’s only film of 2024. Teaming up with Wolverine for the third film in the Deadpool series makes it a must-see for Marvel fans, but there are plenty more multiversal surprises in store, including a ton of cameos from previous Marvel films.
Sabretooth
The latest teaser brings back Wolverine’s archenemy and first onscreen opponent, Sabretooth. Tyler Mane reprises his role from 2000’s ‘X-Men’ and as Deadpool says in the teaser, “People have waited decades for this fight.”
Elektra
Jennifer Garner was one of the first cameos confirmed, reprising her role from the unsuccessful 2005 Daredevil spin-off ‘Elektra.’
Toad
Another alumnus from the original ‘X-Men’ is Ray Park, who returns as Toad, the former Magneto henchman who was dispatched in that film by Halle Berry’s Storm.
Pyro
Appearing in both ‘X2: X-Men United' and 'X-Men: The Last Stand,’ Aaron Stanford is back as Pyro, the fire-manipulating member of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Mutants.
Deathstrike
Kelly Hu will be back to play Deathstrike, another one of Wolverine’s frequent nemeses in comics, who did battle with the X-Man in ‘X2: X-Men United.’
Azazel
From ‘X-Men: First Class,’ Jason Flemyng will return to play Azazel, the teleporting mutant who got his start in the Hellfire Club and was ultimately recruited into Magneto’s Brotherhood of Mutants.
Professor X (rumored)
This one is purely speculation at this point, but it’s not hard to imagine Patrick Stewart returning to play one of his most iconic roles once again. Considering how many X-Men villains are appearing, it would be nice to see one of the heroes make a cameo. Plus, it’s already been done once, when Stewart returned as an alternate variant of Professor Charles Xavier in 2022’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’...

Make some noise, because it’s time to return to “A Quiet Place.”
The third entry in Paramount’s post-apocalyptic thriller series, “A Quiet Place: Day One,” has opened in theaters and made $6.8 million at the box office in Thursday previews.
After the 2018 original movie and the 2021 sequel, “Day One” goes back in time to the early stages of the alien invasion that destroyed society. It’s aiming for an opening between $40 million and $50 million, which is right in line with the previous two films. With a production budget of $67 million, “A Quiet Place: Day One” stands to be another hit to jolt the summer box office.
John Krasinski’s first “A Quiet Place” opened to $50.2 million in 2018 after making $4.3 million in previews, while the sequel launched during the pandemic and made $48 million after $4.8 million in previews. Considering Krasinski didn’t return to direct or appear in “A Quiet Place: Day One,...

Czech writer-director Adam Martinec has taken on a near-sacred Bohemian ritual in his Karlovy Vary Film Festival Official Competition world premiere “Our Lovely Pig Slaughter.”
The annual rendering of the film’s title, known in Czech as a zabijacka, dates back at least to the Middle Ages and has parallels in many other lands – but what fascinated Martinec about the event, he says, was the rich assortment of characters necessary to pull it off.
Most of the men gathered for the winter killing of a Moravian family’s pig reflect the director himself, he adds.
“Partly it was the bizarre setup of pig slaughter itself,” Martinec explains of his fascination. But his real interest in the strange but familial gathering, he says, was “secretly because I needed to confront myself with a picture of myself as a total idiot. Every negative person onscreen is inspired by me and by studying such individuals and their actions,...

Stone, Jesse Plemons and Willem Dafoe head the cast in the Poor Things director’s odd three-part study of control whose central idea proves elusive
Cannibalism. Auto-amputation. Obsession. Delusion. A glum, bearded, entirely silent man whose initials are Rmf. Numerous themes and plot points are nipping away at the bones of Yorgos Lanthimos’s follow-up to Poor Things. An unwieldy triptych of not quite connected stories, starring the same repertory group of actors – Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, Willem Dafoe, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie and Joe Alwyn – in different roles in each of the three chapters, Kinds of Kindness leans back into the surreal cruelty and bizarro-banal logic of the director’s earlier films. Dogtooth is an obvious reference, but there’s also an element of The Lobster’s twisted relationship politics here.

Kevin Bacon, Hollywood’s great survivor, first set hearts fluttering in the 1984 classic Footloose. Now 65, he’s back on the big screen again. Here, he talks about his band, politics, family, embracing change and, most of all, learning selflessness…
There’s a state that veteran Hollywood actors can reach, beyond ravenous ambition, but with retirement still distant, that seems to make them contented as professionals and mellow as people. Kevin Bacon, now 65, has hit that sweet spot. Continually employed for decades, he shares a Manhattan apartment as well as a Connecticut farm with his wife of 35 years, Kyra Sedgwick, and their two adult children, Travis and Sosie. Bacon is in a country band with his brother, Michael, and otherwise channels any musical overspill into adorable Instagram videos of the Family Bacon (barnyard animals included) covering pop songs old and new. The hunger of the 1980s lead-actor-in-waiting, the frustration of the...

From accountant to acting powerhouse, Indian actor Vijay Sethupathi’s 50-film journey has been anything but ordinary.
The actor’s 50th film, the Tamil-language “Maharaja,” written and directed by Nithilan Saminathan (“Kurangu Bommai”), is an action-packed saga that blends thriller elements with family drama and has a father-daughter relationship at its core. It has emerged as one of the biggest Tamil hits of the year.
The actor says he didn’t specifically choose “Maharaja” as a milestone project, but he was drawn to the story and the director’s energy. “We do all the films with so much fear and passion. We just wanted to do what we had imagined,” Sethupathi told Variety about the film’s success. “We didn’t expect this. Of course, I’m happy. But we just wanted my producer to collect the money, he should be safe. Because he has invested so much money just...

In the "Star Trek: Discovery" episode "Face the Strange," Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) becomes inexplicably unstuck in time. First, she is thrown from the 32nd century back to the 23rd century events of "Such Sweet Sorrow Part 2," when the USS Discovery was embroiled in a deadly battle with a malevolent machine intelligence called Control. Then she's thrown even further back, to when the USS Discovery was first being built. Then forward again, to the "Sweet Sorrow" battle. It's all very confusing.
Burnham and a fellow time-stranded coworker, Reyner (Callum Kieth Rennie), eventually find that the Discovery is infected by a bug called a Krenim chronophage that essentially eats time. Its machinations have snared the Discovery in a time tangle, leaving it distracted and unable to move while some weapons-seeking bad guys flee the ship's righteous investigations. Burnham and Reyner keep merrily skipping about in time. They skip ahead to when the Federation was seen destroyed,...

In "The Simpsons" episode "Krusty Gets Kancelled", local TV star Krusty the Clown (Dan Castellaneta) finds that his show is losing viewers to "The Gabbo Show," a newly launched ventriloquist show on another channel. Within a matter of weeks, Gabbo eclipses Krusty, siphoning off the Klown's many celebrity guests and notable cartoon segment "The Itchy & Scratchy Show." Krusty tries to stay afloat with the animated Soviet import "Worker & Parasite," but the magic is missing. Krusty quickly runs out of money thanks to his gambling addiction, and seemingly goes to pot.
Luckily, the plucky Bart Simpson (Nancy Cartwright) encourages Krusty to get back on his feet and stage a star-studded comeback special. Krusty assembles a rogue's gallery of famous people, including Luke Perry (his miserable half-brother), Hugh Hefner, Bette Midler, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. [Editor’s note:The following article contains spoilers for Episode 5 of “The Boys” Season 4, “Beware of the Jabberwocky, My Son.”]
With the ending of Season 3 of “The Boys” seeing Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher diagnosed as terminally ill following multiple injections of Compound V, Season 4 sees him rushing to find a solution, while also being kept on a leash. Since his team doesn’t seem to want his help, he conspires with old CIA colleague Joe Kessler (new cast member Jeffrey Dean Morgan), but in this past week’s episode, “Beware of the Jabberwocky, My Son,” he starts to realize death may not be the only thing he has to worry about. In a recent interview with Variety, showrunner Eric Kripke discussed the episode, acknowledging the mutated bunny Butcher encounters to be a bad omen.
“It doesn’t mean anything good,” he said. “I don’t want to give too much away, but I think Butcher is really starting to wonder what’s happening to him,...

A case could be made that Howard Hawks is one of the greatest American directors of all time. His career spanned from the silent era in the mid-1920s all the way to 1970, and along the way, he made some of the most memorable classics the film industry has ever seen. Hawks directed one of the first gangster movies, made two of the best screwball comedies of all time with "Bringing Up Baby" and "His Girl Friday," created two of the best Humphrey Bogart/Lauren Bacall films ever (and an influential noir classic) with "To Have and Have Not" and "The Big Sleep," and directed at least three classic John Wayne Westerns in the form of "Red River," "Rio Bravo," and "El Dorado." Not too shabby.
But everyone has to start somewhere, and Hawks got a job working as a propman during the summers in the earliest days of Hollywood.

Second, you may not know Carrie Preston or her singular guest turn on both series as cunning, yet scatterbrained lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni. On top of co-starring in last year’s holiday favorite “The Holdovers,” Preston is now taking the lead role with spin-off TV series “Elsbeth,” a crime procedural in the vein of “Columbo” and “Poker Face.” Despite having played the character a number of times now, in a recent piece for the Los Angeles Times, Preston said she’s still finding out new things about this fan favorite character.

Back in 1965, NBC liked the concept of "Star Trek." Show creator Gene Roddenberry had presented a pilot called "The Cage," and the space adventure was beloved by the studio. It did, however, demand that the series undergo a major restructuring, forcing Roddenberry to write a second pilot with all-new characters, save the Vulcan Spock (Leonard Nimoy). The new pilot featured Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the "Star Trek" ensemble we have all come to know and love. The episode itself was called "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and aired on September 22, 1996, presented as the show's third episode.
"Where No Man" is still somewhat unpolished, of course. The uniforms don't quite match the red-blue-gold combo they would eventually become, for instance, and the story was larger and more psychedelic than the more character-driven 1967 heyday of the series. Wedged in the back half of the final season of "The Twilight Zone," during an era that saw Rod Serling's classic sci-fi series begin to wind down after five influential years, "I Am the Night -- Color Me Black" features a deceptively simple premise. In the half-hour episode, a probably innocent man is due to be hanged, and as locals relish the idea of a public execution, the sun refuses to rise over the town in which he's imprisoned.
The man in question is called Jagger (Terry Becker), and it soon becomes clear that there's more to his case than meets the eye. The self-proclaimed activist, we learn, killed a member of the KKK who had previously participated in bombings and attacked at least one person of color. He also aimed to injure the man who ended up killing him, as a local reporter notes that the dead man...

While it was hard not to find an Eddie Murphy film in theaters during the ‘80s, ‘90s, and 2000s, the multi-faceted talent has been more reserved in taking on roles over the last decade. Though he’ll soon be gracing television screens as classic character Axel Foley in Netflix’s upcoming “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” he’s not sure how many more movies he has left in him, but there is one project he’s been waiting for the right moment to take on.
“This one thing I’ve been threatening to do for years called ‘Soul, Soul, Soul,’ Murphy said in a recent interview with The New York Times. “It’s like this fake documentary that I love.”
Murphy described it as “a ‘Zelig’ kind of thing,” referring to the 1983 Woody Allen mockumentary about a fake figure of the 1920s whose desire to fit in caused him to...

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “The Bear” Season 3, including the ending. Read our earlier review for a spoiler-free analysis.]
Welcome back, everyone, to the most stressful — and tastiest — place in Chicago.. “The Bear” is back, and Season 3 brings the heat in 10 new episodes filled with yelling, celebrity cameos, more yelling, celebrity chefs, and even more yelling after that.
FX’s Emmy-minted “comedy” always gives audiences plenty to chew on, and I’m not just talking about when Carmy “basically made nachos” by using “way too many components.” There are heart-soaring highs and misery-spiraling lows, some intentionally crafted by creator Christopher Storer and his talented team, and others unintentionally evoked amid the chaos of creating an ambitious, genre-bending TV show.
So with the full season already in our rearviews — what, how long does it take you to watch a six-hour season of TV? — let’s dig in and savor the best and worst of “The Bear” Season 3. And just for fun,...

George Roy Hill's "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" arrived at a moment when the Western, the most American of movie genres, was being appropriated by Italian filmmakers and Hollywood-bred revisionists like Sam Peckinpah and Clint Eastwood. Baby Boomer moviegoers were rejecting the old-fashioned white hat/black hat simplicity of their parents' unquestioning era, and finding resonance in the violent, unsentimental depiction of a manifest destiny recklessly pursued and ruthlessly realized. Tonally and thematically, the new Westerns jibed with their counterculture sensibilities.
While "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" wasn't overtly political, it did appeal to the counterculture audience by teaming one of Hollywood's hottest movie stars in Paul Newman with a ready-to-explode Robert Redford as a couple of carefree outlaws. Hill wisely embraced the aesthetic freedom of the burgeoning New Hollywood revolution, and played directly to his target audience's authority-and convention-flouting tastes. From its very beginning, "The Boys" has had some great villains. For starters, we have the monsters that are The Seven, as inspired by the Justice League, a blood-thirsty group that loves to abuse its power and, in Homelander's case especially, commit atrocities against mortals. Then there are the more human villains like the scientists at Vought, the executives at Vought, and ... well, basically everyone else at Vought.
Still, no matter how many villains the show threw at the audience, whether it was laser babies, Neuman with her brain-exploding powers, or Soldier Boy the racist Captain America stand-in, no one could match Homelander as the big heel of "The Boys" -- at least until Susan Heyward's Sister Sage entered the picture. We first meet Jessica Bradley, also known as Sister Sage, early in season 4. She is the self-proclaimed smartest person on the planet, and when Homelander comes a-knocking...

On the first season of “The Bear,” Abby Elliot’s sister to Jeremy Allen White’s flawed, but masterful chef Carmy Berzatto, Natalie (mostly referred to as Sugar or Mom), didn’t get a lot of time to stand out. There may be intention in this. For all the characters, that first season represents a moment where everyone’s lives were upended by grief and shifting power dynamics. If there’s anyone who Carmy doesn’t want to disappoint, it’s Natalie, so facing her at a moment when he can’t face himself feels impossible.
By season 2 though, something has reopened inside of him. A passion. Maybe even a faith. It’s at this point that Carmy needs Natalie most. Though Richie and the Fak may have been around the Berzattos for a while, Natalie and Carmy have ridden the whole wild ride out hand-in-hand. In a recent interview with The New York Times,...

Some of the most memorable ventures into "The Twilight Zone" are bottle episodes in spirit if not exact definition. "The Invaders" follows a woman in a remote cabin menaced by tiny aliens. "Nothing in the Dark" features not only a young Robert Redford but also an elderly woman (Gladys Cooper) scared that death will be arriving at her door.
Cooper returned for a similar "Twilight Zone" in the show's fifth and last season: "The Night Call" Cooper plays Elva Keene, an aged widow living in a Maine cabin who is dealing with repeated phone calls that always go silent whenever she picks up. Is it just a technical error, like her nurse assures her? Or is something sinister and supernatural lurking in the phone lines?

It’s an old saw in Hollywood that you shouldn’t put your own money into a movie. But I’ve always had a powerful respect for anyone who does. Clearly, it’s a sign of their commitment — that they care enough about what they’re doing to have some skin in the game. I also think there’s an intoxicating roll-of-the-dice payoff in play: If you put your own money into a movie, your investment could hit the jackpot. (That’s what happened with Mel Gibson and “The Passion of the Christ” and George Lucas with “Star Wars.”) And, of course, there’s the admirable idea that those who self-finance are trying to bring a film into the marketplace that a corporate studio said no to. That’s one way that motion pictures can stay adventurous.

Morgan Freeman shared a note giving thanks to his fans Friday morning, expressing gratitude for users’ efforts calling out unauthorized AI imitations of the actor’s recognizable voice.
The celebrated 87-year-old actor has become legend for his narration in films such as “March of the Penguins,” “The Shawshank Redemption” and “Million Dollar Baby.” The sterling reputation of Freeman’s voice has made him a particularly popular target of AI-generated voice imitations, including in a recent viral series of TikToks created by a woman posing as the actor’s “nepo niece.” Freeman is not a fan of the practice.
“Thank you to my incredible fans for your vigilance and support in calling out the unauthorized use of an A.I. voice imitating me,” the actor wrote. “Your dedication helps authenticity and integrity remain paramount. Grateful. #AI #scam #imitation #IdentityProtection”

"Bones" enjoyed one of the most incredible runs of any TV show in the 2000s. The Fox series ran for 12 seasons, airing 246 episodes. It's an unthinkable number for a scripted show in the new streaming dominated landscape. But what happens when a show like this ends? More specifically, what happens to all of the props and costumes used during the series? Are they just left to languish in a warehouse somewhere never to be seen again like the Ark of the Covenant at the end of "Raiders of the Lost Ark?" In this case, a great many of the show's props were made available to the general public.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly in 2017 after the "Bones" finale aired, the folks at Screenbid got hold of hundreds upon hundreds of items from the show, holding a massive auction with said items going to the highest bidder. The auction included more...

On Season 2 of the HBO TV series “The Gilded Age,” a rather timely plotline seemed to run parallel to the real-life conflict actors and writers faced last summer on the picket lines. “New money” robber-baron George Russell, based loosely on railroad magnates Cornelius Vanderbilt and Jay Gould and played by actor Morgan Spector, when faced with strikes from the steelworkers’ union, chooses to use a soft touch despite being pushed toward violence. He manages to end a strike without injury and offers concessions to the workers, but his larger plans seem to be aimed towards breaking up the union entirely.
Like his character, Spector is interested in the business side of the entertainment industry as much as the creative elements, especially when it came to SAG-AFTRA and WGA fighting for what they deserve.

From her controversial 1976 directorial debut “A Real Young Girl” to even more confrontational later works like “Romance” (1999) and “Anatomy of Hell” (2004), French auteur Catherine Breillat has long been one of the cinema’s premier chroniclers of desire in all its complexities and contradictions. Her latest film, “Last Summer,” is one of her best, a riveting and nuanced portrayal of an affair between an attorney (Léa Drucker) and her 17-year-old stepson (Samuel Kircher) that’s paced like a languorous Éric Rohmer dramedy but grips the audience like a thriller. It’s a remake of the Danish movie “Queen of Hearts,” and while the script by Breillat and Pascal Bonitzer provides “Last Summer” with meticulously crafted dialogue, characterizations, and situations, it’s only a starting point; the greatness of the film is in the visual execution, which is just as Breillat intended.

At the beginning of the third season of "Star Trek: Discovery," the title ship flew through a time portal, shunting the characters forward from the year 2259 to the year 3188. In the 32nd century, the Discovery soon finds, the Federation had been forced into hiding by a galaxy-wide cataclysm that disabled all known starships. In its place rose the Emerald Chain, a money-driven corporation run by the Orions and the Andorians. When the galaxy fell back into capitalism — the Federation was a post-capitalist organization — exploitation and slavery soon followed. Under the Emerald Chain, the galaxy is a very unhappy place, and it will be up to the crew of the Discovery to find the remnants of the Federation and re-establish peace and diplomacy.

Austin Butler is making a name for himself not just as a talented up-and-coming star, but as a man with a penchant for weird voices. Much like his "The Bikeriders" co-star Tom Hardy (a man who's given us a smorgasbord of weird voices in his time), Butler is showing promise as a master of what Hardy termed the "vocal silhouette." His "Dune: Part Two" voice simply demands further examination, for example, but it was his complete transformation for Baz Luhrman's "Elvis" that gave us the most significant vocal tone. In fact, Butler basically reinvented himself as the King of Rock n' Roll for the movie. After a five-month audition that was unlike any other for "Elvis," he disappeared into the character for three years and claimed to lose touch with who he really was by the end of it.
Still, all that dedication seems to have been worth it. Butler...

We're less than a month away from the release of "Deadpool & Wolverine," the only theatrical release from the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we're getting this year. That means some of the movie's secrets and surprises will start becoming part of the official marketing campaign, like the original Sabretooth from "X-Men" making an appearance in a TV spot. Of course, the merchandising often ends up providing some reveals, and a new wave of Funko Pop's for the third "Deadpool" movie has done just that.
Funko has revealed a pair of new vinyl figures for both of the titular characters forced to team up in Marvel's first R-rated theatrical adventure, but both of these Funko POPs come with smaller figures that reveal some of the weirder side of the Merc with a Mouth's multiverse that we'll get to see. Among many other reasons, we come to Nicole Kidman movies to watch her have fun. And she has a lot of fun as Brooke in “A Family Affair,” her new May-December rom-com co-starring Zac Efron as movie star Chris and Joey King as Chris’ assistant (and Brooke’s daughter), Zara. They live in that luxe world of designer clothes, Vogue freebies, and the perfect evening gown for a gala — but in true rom-com fashion, their lives are a much more relatable mess, just waiting for a meet cute.
Brooke and Chris have a particularly memorable one. Attempting to reconcile with the now-fired Zara, Chris stops by her house and interrupts Brooke cleaning in an oversized Blondie T-shirt and denim cutoffs. It’s a far cry from how we’ve seen Kidman lately, and something that costume designer Luis Sequeira wanted to be as eye-opening for the audience as it is for Efron.

Horror movies are historically one of the most dependable genres at the box office, but they've been struggling in 2024. The highest-grossing of the year so far is "Night Swim," a movie about a haunted swimming pool that scraped $54.6 million worldwide -- quite a departure from 2023 megahits like "M3GAN" and "Five Nights at Freddy's." But now, "A Quiet Place: Day One" looks set to overtake "Night Swim" in its opening weekend alone, as audiences flock back to theaters for another installment of the high-tension, low-volume horror series.
Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski ("Pig"), with a story writing credit for franchise creator John Krasinski, "A Quiet Place: Day One" is a prequel with mostly new characters (Djimon Hounsou reprises his role from "A Quiet Place: Part II") that's set in the notoriously noisy city of New York. And yet, in a recent piece for the Los Angeles Times, the Emmy-winning actress claims she’s repeatedly been mistaken for others.

"Death Proof" is usually ranked lowest among Quentin Tarantino's directorial efforts, which is a shame since newbies might take that to mean it's not worth seeking out. (It absolutely is.) A 1970s exploitation homage initially released as part of his and Robert Rodriguez's failed 2007 "Grindhouse" double-feature experiment, the movie lends Tarantino's distinctive banter to a slasher about an over-the-hill stunt double, dubbed "Stuntman" Mike (Kurt Russell), who slays his victims using a rigged stunt vehicle.
"Death Proof" abides by the expectations of its genre for its first half, following Mike as he hunts his prey, not by stalking them under the cover of night but by schmoozing them up at a bar and cunningly striking when their defenses are down (but their blood-alcohol levels are up). It's only in its second half that the film stealthily -- and swiftly -- evolves into a women's empowerment story by way of a revenge thriller,...

Up against two new wide releases, Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” is looking to lead the domestic box office once again. The Disney release added another $17.1 million on Friday, down just 43% from its $30.5 million haul a week ago. Any three-day gross north of $53 million will have it rank among the ten biggest third weekends for a domestic release in box office history. It seems primed to land somewhere around seventh to tenth, with that range currently occupied by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($59.9 million), “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($56 million), “The Avengers” ($55.6 million) and “Jurassic World” ($54.5 million).
The North American total for “Inside Out 2” should get past $468 million through Sunday. The billion-dollar global milestone is coming up fast; it’ll be the first of the calendar year and the first since “Barbie.”

Yahoo! recently announced that Sailor Moon would be returning to Cartoon Network's Adult Swim for Toonami Rewind, a block of programming airing every Friday at 5 p.m. Et starting May 31. But this is not the English dub of "Sailor Moon" that aired on Toonami's original after-school program from 1998 to 2002. Like many young millennials, I was obsessed with the Sailor Scouts and their adventures. Their empowering stories of kicking ass, kissing a handsome prince, and standing up for what's right — all while wearing lip gloss and short skirts — made me believe that girls could do anything. But there was something off about this magical girl anime, something that didn't quite make sense between what I was hearing and seeing.
It turns out that the 1990s English dub from Dic Entertainment and Cloverway completely altered or erased scenes and dialogue to cater to younger American audiences. While there may be...

It didn’t take long for costume designer Lisa Lovass to dive into her exhaustive prep for Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1,” the director’s ambitious Western chronicling the Civil War-era expansion and settlement of the American West. In fact, she started taking notes immediately after reading the first page of Costner’s massive script (co-written by Jon Baird), which was not her usual routine. But it was so densely packed with descriptions of the characters (140 speaking parts), as well as the locations, that Lovass needed to jot it all down to get a head start on her research, which turned into a book-length account of everything (including actual photographs from 1861 to 1865).
Lovass researched with surgical precision because she had three movies to plan. The first movie introduces three storylines: an attack on the Horizon tent town of San Pedro (eventually Arizona) by the Apache across...

Keep it down, please! This article contains mild spoilers for "A Quiet Place: Day One."
When we first found out that "A Quiet Place: Day One" would be the next film in this franchise, reactions were split. On one hand, nobody ever asked for a prequel film detailing how the series' alien invasion first went down; it couldn't help but feel like the very definition of an unnecessary origin story, which the two John Krasinski-directed movies before it had already covered through flashbacks. On the other, the subsequent news that Jeff Nichols would be directing helped make it feel like somewhat less of a blatant cash grab and more like an opportunity for an interesting talent to take a big swing on a blockbuster budget. One of the more unusual creative choices made for Roland Emmerich's 1998 film "Godzilla" was to make it into, essentially, a comedy. In its structure, "Godzilla" is a straight-up adventure blockbuster, replete with the trappings of city-sized destruction and international mayhem that Emmerich typically handles with such aplomb. In its tone, however, "Godzilla" is light and breezy, and focuses on the human character Nick Tatopoulos (Matthew Broderick) and his relationship with his ex-girlfriend, the aspiring reporter Audrey (Maria Pitillo). Audrey feels stymied in her career by a lascivious, egotistical boss Charles Caiman (Harry Shearer) who implies that he'll give her a promotion in exchange for sexual favors. One might also notice that Caiman's secretary is played by actress Nancy Cartwright.
Insulted and disgusted by Charles, Audrey instead takes to the streets of New York with her cameraman Animal (Hank Azaria) hoping to catch footage of the rampaging iguana monster stalking the streets.

Writer/director Christy Hall’s “Daddio” follows, in real-time, a 90-minute NYC cab ride from JFK airport to 44th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues. During that period, the camera rarely leaves the taxi as driver Sean Penn and passenger Dakota Johnson get to know each other during an extended conversation that yields surprising revelations for both the characters and the audience. The strength of Hall’s dialogue is not surprising given her background as an acclaimed playwright, but what really makes “Daddio” work is the way the performances are served by the visual style, as the lights and colors of New York City play off of the actors’ faces in a hypnotic, almost musical fashion; Phedon Papamichael‘s dreamy cinematography keeps the city alive as a character outside without ever detracting from the emotional intimacy of what’s going on inside the cab.

Warning: This article contains intense nerdery and some reckless speculation for "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" season 2.
"Canon" and "lore" are the buzzwords of the day, apparently, and no popular franchise is safe from accusations of "breaking" the sacred texts that came before. "Star Wars" is currently weathering accusations regarding its fealty to George Lucas' previous films and other extraneous material with the Disney+ prequel series "The Acolyte," which dared to include everyone's favorite lumpy-headed Jedi Ki-Adi-Mundi and singlehandedly set off weeks of debate over when he was actually born.
Similar criticisms were lobbed at "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" during its debut season two years ago, mostly as a result of misunderstandings over whether the Middle-earth series is connected to the Peter Jackson "Rings" movies (spoiler: it's not) or incredibly nerdy nitpicking over changes that J.R.R. Tolkien himself would've told fans to chill out about.

One of the reasons "It" by Stephen King is such a scary book is that King sort of cheated. Why write one scary monster, he seems to have asked himself, when you could write a dozen different monsters and make them all the same guy? Although the clown persona is definitely the one that's stuck around the strongest in pop culture, the mysterious It, otherwise known as Pennywise or Bob Gray or The Eater of Worlds, takes a different shape depending on which kid he's trying to prey on.
When he's preying on germaphobe Eddie, he's an infected leper. When he's preying on Mike, he takes the shape of a bird from a movie that recently scared him. He's even seemed to have taken the shape of regular humans or possessed their bodies; such was the case with Beverly's abusive father in the book, who makes the jump from physically...

The rise of Timothée Chalamet has been something to behold in an era where brands like the Marvel Cinematic Universe have tended to swallow prospective movie stars whole. (There's a reason Chris Hemsworth was so nakedly happy to be working with an honest-to-goodness visionary like George Miller on "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.") Borrowing a page from the book of his fellow former teen heartthrob and mentor, Leonardo DiCaprio, Chalamet was careful to establish his credentials as a performer before hitching his name to a franchise. Over the span of just 10 years, he's already joined forces with some of the most renowned directors in the biz -- Christopher Nolan, Wes Anderson, Luca Guadagnino, Denis Villeneuve, Paul King, and Greta Gerwig chief among them.

Since 1938, Superman has dominated countless comic books, inspired a legion of fans, and appeared on the big and small screen to varying degrees of success. Adorned in blue tights and a red cape, the Man of Steel is a traditional hero in every sense of the word: morally sound, full of hope, and never too busy for any task, great or small. He's a Boy Scout who stands for truth, justice, and the American Way, an ideology that contrasts sharply against today's darker generation of heroes like Batman and Spider-Man.
But that hasn't stopped producers from trying their hand at blockbuster success with the big guy. Richard Donner's "Superman: The Movie," the grandfather of all superhero films, remains the most successful entry, critically and commercially, while Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" and Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" trilogy divided critics and audiences alike. Here's a classic from Hollywood's "Nobody Knows Anything" files (a three-word bit of industry wisdom coined by "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" screenwriter William Goldman in his book "Adventures in the Screen Trade").
You didn't need to know much of anything about the film business in the fall of 1992 to predict the box office success of Mick Jackson's "The Bodyguard." Kevin Costner was at the height of his movie stardom coming off the previous year's "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" and "JFK," while his co-star Whitney Houston (making her big-screen acting debut) was one of the most popular recording artists on the planet. The film would have to be an all-time turkey to fall short of profitability.
Based on a 17-year-old screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan, "The Bodyguard" underwhelmed critics, but connected strongly enough with its target audience to pull in $122 million at the domestic box office (on a reasonable $25 million budget). The film,...

Glen Powell is having a moment. Propelled by the box office success of "Anyone But You," and its subsequent streaming domination, the most handsome man you've ever seen is slowly taking over Hollywood. His Richard Linklater-directed Netflix film "Hitman" quickly conquered the streamer's charts when it debuted in June, and Powell will soon guide us all into the eye of the suck zone with the upcoming blockbuster legacy sequel "Twisters." Soon after, Powell will face what might be his biggest test yet in Edgar Wright's upcoming adaptation of "The Running Man." But considering the man's resilience — his first film role was in the more-than 20-year-old "Spy Kids 3" — he should be up to the challenge.
It hasn't been an easy road from "Spy Kids" to leading man, however. Take "Misconduct" for instance. You've likely never heard of this 2016 legal thriller, which is probably for the best considering the...

Any cinephile will likely be able to tell you about the first time a film scared the bejeezus out of them. For people of my generation, Tobe Hooper's 1982 film "Poltergeist" has a lot to answer for. Because the film bore the name of Steven Spielberg as its producer, and because it was only rated PG (it was made before the inception of the PG-13 rating), Hooper's monstrous horror movie was seen by many young children, unaware of the nightmares that lay within. "Poltergeist" featured a killer clown, a man-eating tree, and a scene where a man, possessed by the evil of the house, pulls all the skin off his own face.

“Trans Memoria” director Victoria Verseau is ready for “Trans Love.”
The second part of the planned trilogy about her transition, it will be a fictionalized take on the life-changing trip she took in her twenties.
“I decided to go on a road trip in the U.S. and hitchhike for three months. By myself! I’ve never heard of hitchhiking trans girls and it was an extremely dangerous adventure, but I was young and naïve. I am glad I was, because I have experienced the most wonderful things. And the most terrible things,” she says.
“Back then, I just started taking hormones. I didn’t know how I would be perceived by others: as a gay boy, trans person or as a woman? But I longed for love, and sex. My friends were losing their virginities and my life was on hold. This trip turned into my own sexual revolution.
