Hannah Gadsby is bringing their stand-up show, Woof!, to New York City this fall following its run in Australia and across the United States.
The Australian comedian, who rose to fame with their 2018 Netflix special Nanette which earned them an Emmy Award, is said to be sharing it all — “their worries, their wisdom, and their whimsy” — in the new show.
“Most people would be trying to level up at this point in their career,” Gadsby wrote in a statement. “But not this contrary Nancy. You see, I get the impression the world is ending, so I have decided to go down the nostalgic route over the ambitious one. So, New York City, you’re part of a tour where I am revisiting many of my old haunts, such as the Edinburgh Fringe, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and my cousins in Sandy Bay.”

25 years ago “Strangers with Candy,” currently streaming on Paramount+, premiered on Comedy Central from the brains of Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello, Mitch Rouse, and Amy Sedaris. Sedaris also starred as Jerri Blank, the 46-year-old bisexual junkie returning to high school as a freshman. The sitcom was structured like an after-school special with Jerri rarely learning from her past mistakes as she navigates the lessons of being a teenager all over again. I began watching the show in college, after recognizing it from flipping through the TV channels because Sedaris’ Jerri in passing freaked me out.
Its psychotic humor coupled with my own favorite genre — the high school comedy — was a perfect cyanide comedy cocktail. Aggressively offensive with an earnest heart of gold, “Strangers with Candy” was unlike anything I’d ever seen before and Amy Sedaris became my comedy hero.

Update: More than 300 Jewish creatives — including eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, “SNL” star Sarah Sherman, actor and documentarian Alex Winter and “Seinfeld” writer Larry Charles — have added their names to the list of signatories of an open letter in support of Jonathan Glazer’s Oscars speech.
The number of signees now sits at 492, having more than tripled since Variety first published the April 5 letter, which criticized the attacks on Glazer for being a “dangerous distraction” from the mounting death toll in Gaza while also contributing to the “suppression of free speech and dissent.”
New additions also include Oscar-winning “Anatomy of a Fall” co-writer Arthur Harari, veteran U.K. producer and Oscar winner Jeremy Thomas, “Girls” co-showrunner and co-writer Jenni Konner and “The Hunger Games” writer and director and four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross. Everyone is falling apart in “Stress Positions,” the Sundance premiere now opening in U.S. theaters from Neon on April 19.
The anxiety-inducing comedy directed by Theda Hammel, which she co-wrote with Faheem Ali, centers on a cluster of Brooklyn-dwelling New Yorkers spiraling during the first Covid summer of 2020 and also reeling from their own hang-ups, breakdowns, and break-ups. There’s Terry (John Early), a politically numbed basket case in the midst of a divorce, now spinning his wheels in the Brooklyn brownstone owned by the husband who’s left him. There’s his Moroccan nephew Bahlul (Qaher Harhash), a beautiful model badly injured with a broken leg and convalescing at said brownstone, with nowhere else to go and identity questions of his own. Then there’s Terry’s best friend, Karla (also played by director Hammel), a trans massage therapist in a shitty relationship with a writer (Amy Zimmer), reaping...

Breakfast at Little Dom’s is doing nothing to assuage Chelsea Peretti’s current frustration with Los Angeles. We’re discussing how inescapable the entertainment industry can be in a booth branded with a dedicatory plaque to Jon Hamm. One table over, Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao is taking a meeting and, on the other side of the window, a man walking his dog is starting to look a little familiar. “To make good art, you need to live your life, but most people here are just working and working out,” says Peretti, turning her attention to the man outside. “I’m pretty sure that’s Max Minghella. What a town, huh?”
Peretti’s geographic misgivings, all of them delivered in a deadpan familiar to any of her viewers, listeners or followers, are not entirely serious. Just one day after her 46th birthday, the Bay Area native is the first to...

In her one-woman show, there’s a running joke that Kate Berlant cannot cry on cue. Throughout the performance, she stands in front of a camera that projects footage of her onto a screen above the stage, contorting her face, willing a single tear to fall until, at long last, she triumphs.
Recently, as she closed out the final performances of Kate at the Pasadena Playhouse — after runs in New York and London — the tears were real and more akin to hysterical sobs. “It’s such a surreal experience,” says Berlant, 36, from backstage at the Playhouse. “The crowd can’t tell because they see the tears and think I’m just acting. It made me think about how there’s sort of no difference between a deep emotional experience and just … pretending.”

Actress and standup comedian Kate Berlant is always sure to remind people she didn’t get where she is by taking classes. “I was rejected from acting school,” she tells Rolling Stone. “I have no formal training.” But her one-woman show, Kate, which came to Los Angeles last month (well, technically Pasadena) after previous runs in New York and London, is deeply concerned with questions of artistic lies and emotional truth. It’s also brutally funny.

Jacqueline Novak’s comedy special “Jacqueline Novak: Get On Your Knees” will premiere on Netflix Jan. 23, 2024. The project is directed by Natasha Lyonne (“Poker Face”), who also serves as an executive producer.
Filmed at The Town Hall Theater in New York City, the special features the final performance of Novak’s touring stand-up show “Get On Your Knees,” which premiered in 2019 and sold out multiple times. This 90-minute “concert film-meets-comedy special” revolves around the blowjob and is described as “both raunchy and poignant, an unexpectedly philosophical, coming-of-age tale of triumph that pushes the boundaries of stand-up,” according to the press release.
“Never in my lifetime could I imagine seeing such a hilarious, rigorous, and gut tingling semiotic deconstruction of the phallus in the theatre,” praised “Emily in Paris” actor Jeremy O. Harris of “Get On Your Knees.” “This felt as if Andrea Dworkin and Spaulding Gray had a child they...

Newcomer Samy Burch wasn’t exactly shooting for the stars when she started writing “May December” — which would go on to become a parley between Best Actress winners Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, directed by indie icon Todd Haynes — on spec. “I really wrote this in the coat closet of our apartment. If I had had the people that got these roles on the corkboard, I would’ve seemed grandiose,” said the screenwriter to IndieWire during a sit-down at the 2023 Middleburg Film Festival. “My goal with it was honestly to get representation. So everything that’s happened after that has been incredible.”
After making the outline with husband Alex Mechanik, Burch finished the script on Memorial Day 2019, the holiday that coincidentally kicks off the film, which follows an actress who embeds herself into the lives of a scandalized couple when she is cast in a film about them. And, yes,...

The Writers Guild of America is doubling down on the Television Academy’s plans to cut the number of writing awards given out on the main Emmys telecast.
The guild has urged writers to “express your feelings” about the “regrettable” decision to remove the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series/Special from the main primetime awards.
In a memo to members, the WGA said that the TV Academy made the decision “without any justification or defensible reason.”
It comes after the Emmys unveiled the category breakdown this month. Later that day, the WGA told Deadline that the decision to reduce the number of writing categories on the main telecast from four to three was “misguided given the essential role writers play in the creative process of variety series and generating value for this industry.”
The move means that Outstanding Variety Special (Live) will return to the live telecast as Outstanding...

If dreams could predict the future, Nicolas Cage and film team should be toasting awards success with Dream Scenario for its on-point and absurdly funny representation of the subconscious mind, fame and social media and cancel culture.
Like the random firings of neurons that form dream scenarios, this compelling collective tale of utter ‘ordinariness’ escalating into extreme ‘extraordinariness’ follows unremarkable, middle-aged Professor Paul Matthews (Cage) as he navigates appearing in people’s dreams like some divine intervention, from family to total strangers.
The film opens with Matthews raking leaves by a swimming pool, simply observing, as chaos swirls all around him. In reality, the scholar lives a quiet, modest life and is happily married with two daughters. However, the mediocre-achieving biologist has one nagging regret that he missed his chance of academic notoriety with his ‘ant-elligence’, a theory that is then robbed before his very eyes.

What if Nicolas Cage was Freddy Krueger, minus the fondness for murdering people, the burn-induced scarring, and the razor-bladed glove? Cage's character, the unsuspecting middle-aged professor Paul Matthews, even shares Freddy's predilection for cozy knitted sweaters in "Dream Scenario," the latest eccentric exercise in metamodern storytelling from contemporary indie powerhouse A24.
Much like Paul becomes an overnight celebrity when he inexplicably begins popping up in people's dreams around the world, "Dream Scenario" has suddenly found itself in the spotlight following its positive reception on the film festival circuit. With Cage essentially portraying two characters in the film (the real Paul and the one who keeps intruding into people's nighttime fantasies), his performances in "Dream Scenario" are already being compared to his acclaimed work playing radically different twins in director Spike Jonze and writer Charlie Kaufman's surreal dramedy "Adaptation." It feels like Nicolas Cage is kind of everywhere these days. We’ve had the meta-Cage of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and the vampiric Cage of Renfield, not to mention the unexpected CGI Super-Cage of The Flash. And now, we’re about to see Cage in his more dialled-back, intimate indie-drama form, as the first trailer has just dropped for A24’s new comedy-drama Dream Scenario, in which the Cage-naissance spreads into the world’s subconscious. Watch it below:
Cage plays the mild-mannered and really quite dorky college professor Paul Matthews, the kind of guy who never makes much of a splash, no matter where he goes. Until, out of nowhere, he starts appearing in people’s dreams. First it’s just a few, then it’s more and more, and he’s up to all sorts: sometimes he’s just in the background, other times he’s creeping people out,...

The trailer for Dream Scenario, the upcoming A24 black comedy starring Nicolas Cage, has arrived.
Slated for a wide release November 22nd, Dream Scenario follows Paul (Cage), an unremarkable, woebegone college professor who inexplicably starts appearing in millions of people’s dreams. As an inherent wallflower, Paul is initially troubled by getting recognized by strangers everywhere he goes — but he eventually warms up to the idea of being known as a phenomenon, for better or for worse.
Along with Cage, the cast of Dream Scenario includes Julianne Nicholson, Michael Cera, Tim Meadows, Kate Berlant, Dylan Gelula, and Dylan Baker. It was directed and written by Kristoffer Borgli, and its team of producers includes Hereditary and Midsommar director Ari Aster. Up next from Nicolas Cage is the A24 dark comedy Dream Scenario, which has released its official trailer this morning. From director Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself), A24’s Dream Scenario will release in theaters on November 10, 2023. Watch the trailer below.

“A hapless family man Paul Matthews (Cage) finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. But when his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom.”
The promise of a “nightmarish turn” in this one suggests it’ll be one that horror fans will want to check out. Kristoffer Borgli proved with previous movie Sick of Myself that he’s more than comfortable blending genres into uniquely singular cocktails, as the 2022 film was something of a drama-comedy-body horror hybrid.

Cage stars as hapless family man Paul Matthews whose life is turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. But when his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom.
“Sick of Myself” filmmaker Borgli writes and directs the A24 film, which is produced by Ari Aster, along with lead star Cage, Lars Knudsen, Tyler Campellone, and Jacob Jaffke.
The cast additionally includes Julianne Nicholson, Michael Cera, Tim Meadows, Dylan Gelula, Dylan Baker, and Kate Berlant.
Cage spoke about the meta quality of “Dream Scenario” across his decades of fame, most recently (and virally) as memes, which the Oscar winner similarly parodied in 2022 film “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.”

Nicolas Cage, after more than 100 credits, finally has his dream role, at least as comedy fans are concerned. He knocks it out of the park as a schlubby, balding college professor who suddenly starts appearing in people’s dreams, first his daughter’s, then an old girlfriend’s, and soon millions of people around the globe are seeing this ordinary looking, very plain guy walking through their slumber in rather non-descript ways no matter what the situation. He becomes a phenomenon, until it reverses and the whole thing turns into a literal nightmare.
This is the inspired comic premise of Dream Scenario, perhaps the most ingenious screen idea Woody Allen never had, although it might have been interesting if he did (think a twisted Zelig). Instead it comes from the mind of Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli, whose main claim to fame before this film, which had its world premiere at...

Think about some of the weirdest dreams you’ve ever had. Maybe you were perched on a dining room table while hungry alligators slithered toward you. Or the one where you’re sitting by a swimming pool as various objects fall from the sky. Or that nightmare where a tall, terrifying man in tattered clothes slowly stalks you in the woods, while you seem to be stuck running in slow motion. Got one in mind? Good.
Ok, now picture a schlubby, middle-aged man casually strolling through that dream. He’s not really doing anything,...

Kristoffer Borgli’s Dream Scenario, a surrealist comedy starring Nicolas Cage, will open this year’s Zurich Film Festival.
The feature, the English-language debut of the Norwegian director — who wowed Cannes last year with his feature debut Sick of Myself, sees Cage play Paul Matthews, a hapless family man whose life is turned upside down after millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. Dylan Baker, Kate Berlant, Michael Cera, Dylan Gelula, and Tim Meadows co-star.
Dream Scenario will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, where it will open TIFF’s Platform competition program. A24 is releasing the film domestically. This marks the first time the Everything Everywhere All at Once studio will have an opening night film in Zurich.
The ongoing dual writers and actors strike means the cast of Dream Scenario is not expected to attend the Zurich premiere but director Borgli will be in attendance,...

Abbi Jacobson is calling out Amazon Prime Video over the cancellation of a shortened “A League of Their Own” Season 2.
The series’ star, co-creator, and executive producer took to Instagram to address the news that the slated final four episodes of “League” are no longer moving forward due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“What luck I have had to get to tell these stories and play this character I love so much. What a rare thing in life,” Jacobson captioned. “And so I am sad today. To blame this cancellation on the strike, is bullshit and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways this show has been put through the ringer. Not today.”
The “Broad City” alum continued, “This post here is about the special show I was lucky to make with so many incredibly talented artists and actors and writers and crew.

“A League of Their Own” co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson has reacted to the news that Amazon has scrapped Season 2 due to the ongoing strikes, calling the decision “bullshit and cowardly.”
On Friday, Variety confirmed that the series — based on the 1992 baseball film of the same name — would no longer be going forward with its shortened final season, which was greenlit in April. According to sources, the cancellation came about due to the writers and actors strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
