Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2024, Cillian Murphy, 47, won for his portrayal of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the Best Picture champ “Oppenheimer.” He was the sixth Best Actor winner in a decade to prevail for playing a real person after Will Smith (“King Richard”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Gary Oldman (“The Darkest Hour”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), and Eddie Redmayne;. The four to win for fictional parts were Brendan Fraser, Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker), and Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”). While binge-watching Netflix may be the last thing you want to do this summer, streaming a few movies on a cozy movie night can never hurt. And thanks to the steamer's extensive library, you won't be left out of options.
If you already have your subscription active for the rest of July, you might as well take your last chance and check out these 8 movies that are leaving the platform this month.
The Beguiled (2017)
If you enjoyed Sofia Coppola's recent hit Priscilla, which tells the story of the disastrous love and abuse in Priscilla Presley's marriage to Elvis, chances are you'll find 2017's The Beguiled just as exciting.
Set in the mid-1800s, the movie follows Martha Farnsworth, who runs a school for girls in Virginia during the American Civil War. Starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst, this period thriller has no chance of leaving anyone indifferent.

Broadway continued settling in to its post-Tonys summer last week, with box office for most shows slipping at least a bit from the previous week and the total roster trimmed to 30 from 32.
In all, receipts for the 30 productions totaled $34,783,390, down about 7% from the previous week (one of the shows no longer on the roster was the heavy-hitter An Enemy of the People). Attendance for the week ending June 30 was 264,578, down about 6% from the previous week. Even with the small decline, a strong 93% of available seats were filled.
Some notable numbers:
Merrily We Roll Along once again broke the house record at the Hudson Theatre – the ninth time for those keeping count. With its July 7 closing date fast approaching, the revival grossed $2,321,807 for the week; The Outsiders, which won the Tony for Best Musical, set a house record at the Bernard B. Elusive by nature, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club is not exactly the Cabaret audiences are used to, and its ending reflects that.
At its barest of bones, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club starring Eddie Redmayne tells the same story as the four Broadway productions of the show before it. A writer checks into a Berlin boarding house, meets and becomes intimately involved with a tormented Cabaret singer, and watches as the city falls victim to the atrocities of World War II.
Beyond this basic skeleton, though, the 2024 take is not the Cabaret theatergoers are familiar with. Audiences are fully immersed in the story being told on the circular center stage, with the August Wilson Theatre having been transformed into the nightclub from the show itself.

A double-digit slip in the Nielsen ratings notwithstanding, the Tony Awards worked their magic at the box office, with this year’s winners, contenders and show-stealers reporting big increases in attendance and receipts.
Just a few examples: An Enemy of the People, Merrily We Roll Along and Stereophonic posted box office gains in the six figures.
In all, the 32 Broadway shows grossed $37,565,097 for the week ending June 23. That’s a 2% increase over the previous week, a more impressive bump than it seems at first glance: The previous week had 35 shows, including hefty money-makers Ben Platt: Live at the Palace, Uncle Vanya and Mother Play. The absence of those shows last week went a long way in explaining the 4% drop in attendance to 282,752.
Among the numbers:
An Enemy of the People, which starred the Tony-winning Jeremy Strong, broke its own house record at Circle in the Square, taking in $1,545,913 for its final week of performances,...

Forgettable even by the impossibly low standards of a mid-budget Netflix action movie, Mouly Surya’s “Trigger Warning” might be a shade more colorful than colossal bores like “Red Notice” and “The Gray Man,” but this still-bland Jessica Alba vehicle is all the more frustrating because it doesn’t feel like some defanged summer blockbuster that was denied its true purpose by skipping past theaters. On the contrary, an R-rated, character-driven “First Blood” throwback about a Special Forces commando who returns from Syria to find her fading hometown in the grip of a high-powered arms dealer is precisely the kind of action movie that Netflix should be making.

A stunning beauty who just never seems to age, Anne Hathaway is one of the best talents in the entire entertainment industry. Through fan-favorite masterpieces like The Princess Diaries film series (2001-04), The Devil Wears Prada (2006), and Les Misérables (2012), she has proven to be a versatile actress by effortlessly slipping into different moods as per what the role required of her.

On Sunday, the 77th annual Tony Awards were held, hosted by Broadway and film actress Ariana DeBose at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. The ceremony saw wins for Sarah Paulson, Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe. Several notable faces took the stage as presenters, including Angelina Jolie, Brooke Shields, Nick Jonas and even former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
This year’s nominations raised some skeptical responses over the omission of the fan-favorite revival of The Wiz and Appropriate‘s nomination for costume design. The ceremony was also deemed “dull” by many viewers citing numerous on-stage speech fumbles and a lack of stage presence from presenters and award winners.
Regardless, fans were excited to see their favorite faces take home their wins. Stereophonic and Alicia Keys‘ musical Hell’s Kitchen swept the categories with 13 nominations. Paulson returned to the stage after 13 years and snagged a win,...

On last night’s Tonys, the world outside the Kit Kat Club got its first glimpse at Eddie Redmayne’s take on the Emcee in the revival of Cabaret — dubbed Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club for its immersive elements — currently occupying Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre. Reaction to the interpretation has ranged from enraptured to bewildered.
The performance, which sees Redmayne contort like a broken marionette in a party hat, strays from previous incarnations of the character, who’s meant to evoke a kind of funhouse hedonism oblivious to the winds of Nazism gaining strength outside the cabaret doors.
There was Joel Grey’s original take (on Broadway in 1966 and reprised in Bob Fosse’s landmark 1972 film version), a Mephistophelian character in white makeup and a too-large tuxedo. Then Alan Cumming sexed up the role in a 1993 revival envisioned by Sam Mendes.

A few key stories have emerged with the dust settling on the 77th Annual Tony Awards. One, we should have seen “Merrily We Roll Along” when we had the chance (it closes July 7!). Two, it’s great that Brooke Shields has broken the Crocs-red carpet barrier. And three, why does Eddie Redmayne singing directly into the camera give us the willies?
With that out of the way, though, awards-obsessives can crack out their abacuses and start making charts to see who is getting closer to achieving Egot status.
Egot, of course, stands for Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, Tonys, and while Sunday night didn’t put anyone over the top, we have a few celebs who can start giving it serious thought.
Sarah Paulson won her first Tony for Best Actress in a Play, for Branden Jacobs-Jenkens’s dysfunctional family drama “Appropriate.” Paulson is a seven-time Emmy nominee and one-time winner for “The People vs.

There were a ton of “Hollywood names” at the 77th Tony Awards on Sunday night, which undoubtedly helped to elevate interest in a nationwide telecast that is always a bit of a tough sell, given that it celebrates shows that relatively few people outside — or even inside — the tri-state area have actually seen.
Among the A-listers on hand this year were Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose, returning as the host for the third time; presenters such as Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Hudson, Oscar winners both; performers including Alicia Keys, Jay Z, Pete Townshend and yet another Oscar winner, Eddie Redmayne; and worthy honorees like Jeremy Strong (best actor in a play for An Enemy of the People) and Sarah Paulson (best actress in a play for Appropriate), each of whom has an Emmy at home, and Daniel Radcliffe (best featured actor in a play for Merrily We Roll Along), the...

Angelina Jolie and Debra Martin Chase took home the Tony Award for best musical for The Outsiders.
The show takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967, when Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend, Johnny Cade and their Greaser family of “outsiders” battle with their rivals, the Socs, according to the musical’s description. Over the course of the show, nominated for 12 Tonys, the family members dream about who they want to be in a world that may never accept them.
The musical was up against Hell’s Kitchen, Illinoise, Suffs and Water for Elephants for the final award of the evening. Among industry members, the best musical category was the most up in the air leading up to the Tony Awards — though Hell’s Kitchen and The Outsiders were viewed by many as the leading contenders. The musical also took home best direction, lighting design and sound design.

Eddie Redmayne now knows Warren Beatty is a true friend he can rely on.
On Tuesday’s episode of Late Night With Seth Meyers, The Good Nurse actor recalled being involved in an online scam a few years ago where his email got hacked and all his contacts received money requests.
“I was actually in New York at the time and I had a big night the night before,” he explained. “And I woke up in New York and I turned on my phone and I listened to this voicemail. And I turned to my wife [Hannah Bagshawe], and I said, ‘I think Warren Beatty has just left me a voicemail checking [if] I’m okay and whether I need money.'”
“I was sort of hungover and trying to make sense of this thing,” Redmayne added.

Will My Wife’s Domestic Demands Damage My Image?
Dear Remy,
At first, it was just texts with the usual requests partners send each other—”pick up the dry cleaning”; “we’re out of diapers”; “I’m on my way home”; “could you lay out my slippers?’
Sure, my wife could have asked her Pa or the housekeeper. And yes, the tone was a little rude and demanding. But it felt like she was playing at us being a normal couple (rather than two award-winning film actors with a sizeable staff). And I thought I could detect a hint of domination in there too. I didn’t say anything because I found it sort of sweet and even a little sexy.
I should have said something to nip it in the bud — my wife had never before treated me like an underling. I hoped the whole thing was just a...

Broadway had been making progress toward an industrywide recovery, but new data shows halted momentum in the most recent season.
According to data from the industry trade group The Broadway League, overall grosses for the 2023-2024 season were down about 2.5 percent compared to the previous season, reaching $1.54 billion compared to $1.58 billion the prior year. And compared to the 2018-2019 season, the last full season before the pandemic closed all theaters, grosses were down 17 percent.
Even if viewed as largely flat compared to last season, that spells trouble for the industry, given the rising cost of producing a show.
“Every year our expenses go up at least five percent, if not more, because we so outpace inflation,” says Ken Davenport, producer of the Neil Diamond musical A Beautiful Noise. “So flat is terrible.”
Attendance was also largely flat compared to this past season, which ran from May to May, coming in...

Dana Strong, CEO of Comcast-owned Sky Group has promised customers of the U.K. media conglomerate will continue to receive Warner Bros Discovery content on Sky platforms, saying that discussions with the studio to extend their content agreement are ongoing.
“We’ve been a partner with Warner for a very long time,” said Strong, adding that they’re “in conversation” about the future of their deal.
The deal, which primarily covers HBO content such as “Succession” and “And Just Like That,” is set to expire next year. Given the rise of studio-owned streamers, at the beginning of the multi-year output deal it seemed it would be unlikely to be renewed, with Wbd focusing on funnelling exclusive content to its own streaming offering Max.

If you’ve seen the 2012 film adaptation of Les Miserables, you’ve experienced Anne Hathaway’s short but stellar performance.
Based on the 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo, the musical, known by many simply as Les Mis, is set in early nineteenth-century France during the June Rebellion, a time of unrest in the country. Anne Hathaway has little screen time, but her character is significant in the film’s storyline.

Hathaway portrays the character of Fantine, an unwed mother forced into prostitution to support her young daughter, Cosette. The complicated and emotional role took a toll on Hathaway, who underwent physical and mental changes to portray the character as accurately as possible.

Eddie Redmayne had one of the best moments in his career when he won the Oscar for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. The actor did immense research and training to portray the late theoretical physicist accurately and received widespread acclaim.
However, despite such training, the British actor found himself suffering from intense anxiety and lack of sleep before filming the 2014 biopic. Recently in an interview, Eddie Redmayne confessed that he could not sleep for the entire night worrying if he could do justice to the role.

Think The Munsters, but way more grim.
UCP is developing 1313, which has been described as a horror series that plays on the Universal Monsterverse, aka a reimagining of the classic 1964-66 CBS sitcom The Munsters.
Lindsey Anderson Beer is set to showrun the drama. The project is being developed by James Wan, Beer and Ingrid Bisu for UCP. Atomic Monster and Lab Brew are the production companies.
Executive producers are Beer and Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett for Atomic Monster. Bisu is a co-exec producer.
The last time someone tried to dust off The Munsters for the small screen was in 2017, when NBC opted to reboot the comedy with Odd Mom Out creator Jill Kargman and Seth Meyers. The half-hour single-camera version was going to follow members of an offbeat family who are determined to stay true to themselves but struggle to fit in in hipster Brooklyn.

Several inconvenient things can happen in a movie set, and much more if one stars in films that require extravagant costumes, such as Fantastic Beasts. Fans know how stunning the wardrobe of the characters in the franchise is, but not all glamorous things are comfortable to wear.

Working in a set like Fantastic Beasts has its ups and downs, and for actress Katherine Waterston, who played Porpentina Goldstein, it was her costume that extremely bothered her.

As buyers touch down at Lax for the annual LA Screenings, it will be a case of a return to the norm following the unusual circumstances of last year. The Hollywood labor strikes not only threw confusion on what would be a realistic purchase, but also stopped acquisitions executives getting face time (and a quick selfie) with acting and writing talent — something many value as part of their buying process.
There will be no such issues this year, and the studio sales bosses are relishing a return to the norm. “We’re really excited, it feels like we’re really back after the strikes and firing on all cylinders,” says David Decker, President of Content Sales for Warner Bros. When an estimated 1,000 international TV buyers descend on Los Angeles for the annual TV event known as the LA Screenings, they will see a contracted market still recovering from the twin Hollywood strikes of last year and, to a somewhat lesser extent, the pandemic.
It kicks off with the LA Screenings Independents, held May 15-17 for smaller studios and distributors at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, which are then followed by screenings at the major studios’ respective lots across May 18-22 where they present their latest shows. They may also host a variety of events for their clients during those days, which may include cocktail receptions and luncheons or dinners with talent and executives.
While stalled projects ramped up as soon as the strikes ended, some delays were inevitable. “A couple of months ago I was wondering if we were going to be entertaining [buyers],” says Lisa Kramer, president, International Content Licensing,...

Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics unveiled nominations for their 2nd annual Dorian Theater Awards on Monday, March 13. Galeca’s 39-member theater wing decided this season’s crop of nominees, which honor the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway.

Who has not felt the sting of a missed opportunity, especially when you have come so close to your big break? For O’Shea Jackson Jr., the brush with a galaxy far, far away was definitely a bitter pill to swallow—one that the fandom of both Star Wars and the actor can empathize with.
Rising to fame as an actor in F. Gary Gray’s 2015 biopic film, Straight Outta Compton, Jackson Jr.’s talent has been evident. Earlier this year, moreover, his candidness about the disappointment of losing a coveted role in Ron Howard’s 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story to Donald Glover was as relatable as it was commendable.
