The new Apple TV+ series “Constellation” is a space drama, a category in which its deep-pocketed platform has developed something of a preoccupation. But the show also exemplifies a type of series so recognizable it’s become practically a genre unto itself: a story that calls for the concision of a feature film that’s been stretched out to fill a TV-sized number of episodes.
“Constellation” stars Noomi Rapace as Jo Ericsson, an astronaut who survives a deadly collision at the International Space Station — only to experience disturbing visions back on Earth. The what/why/how of Jo’s experience in orbit could make for a gripping mystery, but creator and sole screenwriter Peter Harness stretches these questions over eight hours, killing their momentum and stretching the show’s worthwhile elements far too thin.

In this trippy space thriller, cool-headed Swedish astronaut Jo Ericsson (Noomi Rapace) returns to Earth after a freak accident at the international space station, but something at home seems not quite right with her husband, Magnus Taylor (James D’Arcy), and young daughter, Alice. A hint to just how strange Jo’s world gets over Constellation‘s eight episodes as she tries to unravel what happened: Alice’s favorite toy is a plush white rabbit. “Jo’s used to being practical, and she gets dragged into this really weird reality of trying to figure out what’s going on and if she lost her mind, or if it’s a huge conspiracy or something else,” says Rapace. “Her fight to reunite with her daughter is so painful and beautiful, and I could really relate to it in many ways, being a mother myself. We go to sets in remote ...

Plot: An astronaut who returns to Earth after a disaster in space only to discover that key pieces of her life seem to be missing. The action-packed space adventure is an exploration of the dark edges of human psychology, and one woman’s desperate quest to expose the truth about the hidden history of space travel and recover all that she has lost.
Review: Man, the International Space Station is getting trashed lately. For years, films like Gravity and The Cloverfield Paradox as well as countless others have used the station as the setting for disaster, but this year alone has had more than one project featuring it. First, the horror film I.S.S. made the triumphant existence of a joint space station a thing of terror and now Constellation fills viewers with a sense of foreboding surrounding the orbiting satellite. The resulting series is a psychological thriller that combines elements of horror,...
