5 years ago, the world saw a folk horror that is today considered the best one to get over a heartbreak for girls. Florence Pugh’s Midsommar spoke about female anger, revenge and grief and broke the genre’s canons in a very surprising way.
However, 10 years before that, another feminist horror was released, even though it was grossly underappreciated at the time. Luckily, it’s now getting more viewership, and it’s proved by the fact that it’s now holding the fifth place in Disney+ global chart.
It starts by introducing us to Needy, an awkward teenager who learns the shocking truth about her friend, the school’s hottest girl. The point is that the latter is now a vampire possessed by a demon that forces her to kill their male classmates, and it’s Needy who must put an end to her bloody hunt for the boys’ flesh.

Megan Fox and Robert Pattinson have had similar trajectories in their early career as they became household names by starring in big franchises. Fox’s breakout role was as Mikaela Banes in 2007’s Transformers and its sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. 2009’s Jennifer’s Body would become her most celebrated film in which she played the lead.

Similarly, Pattinson starred in Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire and broke out as Edward Cullen in the Twilight films. As contemporaries in the industry, people like to talk about them and compare their works. In 2009, the actress did not have nice things to say about ‘immature men’ in their 20s, like Pattinson and Zac Efron.

Mixed genres movies sometimes turn into actual gems. But we are not talking about similar bunch of them thrown together, like when it is a crime drama with thriller elements. What makes it interesting when the genres that are not so easy to mix are blended together.
For example, horror comedy is one of our favorites, and it does get a lot of praise. But there’s one subgenre that is totally underrated, and that is erotic thriller. Not everyone understands the power of such movies, probably thinking of it as some sort of 50 Shades franchise equivalent.
Here are 5 stunningly good thrillers in which sex serves not as a means of thirsty entertainment, but as a powerful narrative tool.

During an interview, Streep said she became fascinated with the stage musical after the events of 9/11. In the pantheon of great Hollywood films with a major feminist bite, the Geena Davis- and Susan Sarandon-starring “Thelma & Louise” remains the contemporary standard-bearer. The Callie Khouri-penned MGM crime drama about two best friends on the run (who find themselves and their knack for taking bad men down a peg in the process) was a commercial and critical smash when it hit theaters in May 1991.
With a splashy Cannes premiere to launch it, the film made over $45 million at the box office (in 1991 dollars and on a $16.5 million budget) and went on to pick up six Oscar nominations, with a Best Original Screenplay win for first-time writer Khouri.
And, yes, it was directed by a man. That Ridley Scott was at the helm of this feminist masterpiece still surprises some — or at least those not totally familiar with the filmmaker’s wide oeuvre. Even star Davis...

Inspired by the Kathy Braidhill book of the same name, the series will chart the chilling and twisted tale of the Lamb Funeral Home in 1980s Los Angeles. When David Sconce — the Machiavellian scion of a Bible college football coach and a church organist — takes the reins of the family business, the seemingly All-American clan begins a jaw-dropping descent from saints to sinners. Desperate to keep their funeral home afloat, Sconce engineers a sinister new business strategy, replete with human body harvesting and mass cremation. Jessica Chastain always manages to turn heads with her fashion choices. I find her style bold and daring; for me, she’s a total red carpet icon. She constantly impresses me with her ability to pull off unique looks that perfectly flatter her figure.
That said, I am not as blown away by her latest outfit. It isn’t a bad look by any means. Her look is polished and chic. However, it doesn’t quite have the same wow factor I’m used to seeing from her.

In recent years, Lacey Chabert has been best known for her work in Hallmark films (she's starred in more than 30 of them).

Netflix viewers keep giving another chance to big flops of the past years, and now it’s finally time for a forgotten western comedy to prove itself. Directed by Seth MacFarlane, the movie never made it to any critical or commercial success back in the day, though now it suddenly receives some kind of approval from the streaming’s subscribers as this week has marked the film’s unexpected entrance in Netflix’s top 10 chart in the US.

Charlie Brooker anticipates a lot of things. As the creator and writer of Black Mirror, his Emmy-winning sci-fi Netflix series has predicted everything from new Apple technology to the election of a certain U.S. president.
With the season six episode “Joan Is Awful,” Brooker knew the AI-centered story would be timely. But even his dystopian crystal ball couldn’t have foreseen that the Ally Pankiw-directed installment starring Annie Murphy and Salma Hayek would become a flashpoint in Hollywood’s AI battle.
“A couple of times on the show, there’s been something I’ve written and then something similar happens in the real world similar-ish,” says Brooker. “Narcissistically, you start to feel like, ‘This is too big a coincidence. I feel like I’m living in a simulation.’”

If you’ve seen the 2012 film adaptation of Les Miserables, you’ve experienced Anne Hathaway’s short but stellar performance.
Based on the 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo, the musical, known by many simply as Les Mis, is set in early nineteenth-century France during the June Rebellion, a time of unrest in the country. Anne Hathaway has little screen time, but her character is significant in the film’s storyline.

Hathaway portrays the character of Fantine, an unwed mother forced into prostitution to support her young daughter, Cosette. The complicated and emotional role took a toll on Hathaway, who underwent physical and mental changes to portray the character as accurately as possible.

The genre of Western movies can be considered the most serious one as its characters are almost always cold and tough as steel. However, what if we take a typical Wild West plot and make a comedy that will mock all the genre’s obvious tropes of it?
Such an attempt was made by Seth MacFarlane, who is famous for creating the Family Guy sitcom (since 1999) and two of Mark Wahlberg-starring Ted movies (2012 and 2015). Indeed, the filmmaker has the required comedy potential, so let’s learn about this movie.
The plot of MacFarlane’s Western flick centers on Albert Stark, a farmer who lives his calm life near the notorious Western frontier. After breaking up with his girlfriend, he loses all his temper but, luckily, is then helped by Anna, a brave female gunfighter.
Stark starts finding his inner courage under the woman’s surveillance, and it’s high time to show himself off,...

If you've ever watched any behind-the-scenes footage from "The Shining," you might remember Jack Nicholson working himself up into a frenzy prior to shooting the famous "Here's Johnny" scene. As poor Shelly Duvall quietly finds her way into the bathroom, Jack can be seen seething as he descends into the deranged mental space required for the scene. No wonder "The Shining" changed Shelly Duvall forever.
But while Nicholson's process for journeying to the outer edges of sanity involved jumping in place, repeating the words, "Come on!," and almost accidentally giving the Pa a concussion with a prop axe, not all actors follow that same method. We all know the punishing physical lengths to which Christian Bale goes in order to truly feel like the characters he portrays. As the actor told The Guardian, "I try to get as distant as possible. Otherwise, I can't do it. It's helpful not to look like yourself.

My, my, nobody could resist it, and seems like Mamma Mia is getting back to the cinema screens once again. Six years after the first movie’s sequel Mamma Mia! During her visit to the Cannes Film Festival where she received an Honorary Palme D’Or at the opening ceremony, Streep spilled the tea in one of her interviews saying that she has a conversation with Mamma Mia’s creators on her to-do list concerning the actress’ possible return to...

The 10-episode third season of the Paramount+ drama series will premiere Sunday, June 2. Photo credit: “Shutterstock.AI” Remember how crazy it is that the iconic movie Mean Girls is practically an adult now? Two decades! Tina Fey’s wickedly funny writing (and her Ms. Norbury role!) is still pure gold. And that cast! Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried – they were all pitch-perfect, and the film sent Lohan soaring. Cady Heron (Lohan) tries to infiltrate the ultra-popular Plastics, but her crush on Regina George’s ex sets off the classic high school drama we all know too well. Oh, the cringe!” So, why does Mean Girls still hit home after all this time? Probably because those social groups and sneaky power plays just keep on happening. Even with the Broadway musical (and the less-awesome movie-of-the-musical), the story just keeps on proving how timeless it is. As Lindsay Lohan said when the movie first blew up. Amy Adams has been tapped to star in At the Sea, a new drama from Kornel Mundruczó and Kata Wéber — the director and writer of such acclaimed films as Pieces of a Woman and White God — as well as Hammerstone Studios, Ryder Picture Company and Ar Content.
Set to enter production in Boston in June, the film follows the life of Laura (Adams) after a long rehabilitation, as she returns to her family at their beach holiday home where she has to readjust to the complicated life she left behind. Now she is forced to face the following next chapter of her life without the career that gave her fame, fortune and, most importantly, identity.
Pic will be produced by Alexander Rodnyansky of Ar Content, Stuart Manashil, Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett for Ryder Picture Company, Hammerstone Studios’ Alex Lebovici and Jon Oakes, and Viktória Petrányi and Mundruczó. Exec producers are Paul J. Diaz, Maria Breese of 3:33 Creative, Lee Broda of Lb Entertainment, Jeff Rice of Jeff Rice Films, and Michael Kupisk. Zsofi Oblath and Rachel Rubin will co-produce.
Ar Content, Paul J. Diaz, and Hammerstone Studios will finance the film, with WME Independent to rep domestic rights, Capstone Pictures handling international, and Sacker Law to oversee production legal.
A six-time Academy Award nominee, Adams most recently wrapped production on 3000 Pictures’ Klara and the Sun, the next film from Oscar winner Taika Waititi, which adapts the dystopian sci-fi story from Kazuo Ishiguro. Up next, she’ll be seen starring in Searchlight Pictures’ Nightbitch from filmmaker Marielle Heller, a dark comedy she also produced through her production company Bond Group Entertainment that hits theaters December 6.
A married director-writer pair out of Hungary, Mundruczó and Wéber are perhaps best known for their 2020 pregnancy drama Pieces of a Woman, which premiered in Venice and brought star Vanessa Kirby her first Oscar nomination following its release on Netflix. Prior to that, the duo collaborated on White God, which won the Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes in 2014; Jupiter’s Moon, which was nominated for the Palme d’Or; and Evolution, which also played the French festival. Separately, Mundruczó directed the pilot of the Apple TV+ limited series, The Crowded Room, starring Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried.
Most recently, Hammerstone produced the action thriller Boy Kills World starring Bill Skarsgård, which will release wide on April 26, and the horror-thriller Don’t Move, starring Kelsey Asbille and Finn Wittrock, for Netflix.
Ryder Picture Company has produced acclaimed titles like Dumb Money and Bruiser.
Ar Content is known for Cannes prize winners like 2019’s Beanpole, from filmmaker Kantemir Balagov, and 2021’s Unclenching the Fists from Kira Kovalenko.
Adams is represented by WME, Linden Entertainment, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern. Mundruczó and Wéber are repped by United Agents and Novo.

Al Pacino and Dan Stevens have teamed up for exorcism horror film “The Ritual” from director David Midell.
XYZ Films has acquired worldwide rights to the feature, with plans to release it theatrically in 2025 and arrange international distribution at the upcoming Cannes market.
“The Ritual” was written by Midell and Enrico Natale and produced by Andrew Stevens, Mitchell Welch and Natale. Ashley Greene and Abigail Cowen round out the cast.
Based on a true story, “The Ritual” follows two priests — one questioning his faith (Stevens) and one reckoning with a troubled past (Pacino) — who must put aside their differences to save a possessed young woman through a difficult and dangerous series of exorcisms. The film is an authentic portrayal of Emma Schmidt, an American woman whose demonic possession culminated in harrowing exorcisms. Her case remains the most thoroughly documented exorcism in American history.

True crime genre is getting more and more popular each day and there’s no secret why: gripping stories about things that seem impossible in real life. However, what makes them even more exciting for the viewers is the fact that what is shown on screen has actually happened in reality, and that just makes people lose their minds.
One of the recently released true crime dramas is Netflix’s Baby Reindeer. The miniseries tells the gripping story of the performer Richard Gadd, who at his young age was harassed by a female stalker.
The story is powerful and already got 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, but here we have 5 more jaw-dropping series that follow real-life terrifying stories.
1. When They See Us (2019)
When They See Us is just 3% short of a perfect score, but that means nothing in this case because the series is considered the best true crime of all time.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the packed limited series race, which has seen three new contenders premiere in the last three weeks.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve circled back to what is arguably the most competitive Emmys category this year: limited series. It feels like as good a time as any to return to my favorite race – particularly with “Shōgun” and Anna Sawai dominating the discourse, as well as the premiere of our dark horse favorite “Under the Bridge.” We talked about both shows this week with our voices, and I must say, it feels heartening — dare I type, Siri pay “Vindicated” – to have been so right about “Shōgun.” We both loved that show way back in February and the response has been off the charts.

Margaret Qualley is no longer going to star in Hulu’s limited series about Amanda Knox, Variety has confirmed.
The untitled series was announced in March with Qualley set to star and executive produce. She has reportedly exited the project due to scheduling conflicts. The role will now be recast.
This is not the first time Hulu has lost its lead actress in a limited series based on a real person. Kate McKinnon was once attached to play Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in what would become “The Dropout,” the role that was eventually played by Amanda Seyfried. Seyfried would go on to win an Emmy for her work on the show.
Hulu has ordered eight one-hour episodes of the show. The official description states that it is “based on the true story of how Knox was wrongfully convicted for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher and her 16-year odyssey to set herself free.

Exclusive: Margaret Qualley has pulled out of playing Amanda Knox in Hulu’s upcoming limited series for scheduling reasons.

The untitled Hulu limited series from writer Kj Steinberg and 20th Television in association with The Littlefield Company, was officially greenlighted last month with Qualley on board to star and executive produce. The role is now being recast. The development won’t impact production plans as the eight-episode project is scheduled to start filming in October.
