Many awards prognosticators expected the drama categories at this year’s Emmys to feature an odd assortment of nominated titles. Consider it a perfect storm of sorts: With the ending of HBO’s Succession (which took the top prize for three of its four seasons) and AMC’s Better Call Saul (which garnered a staggering 53 nominations across its six seasons without a single win) — plus the fact that last year’s strikes forced shows like last year’s drama nominees The Last of Us, Stranger Things, The White Lotus and Yellowjackets to delay production — this year’s contenders for best drama series include only one previous nominee in The Crown, which won the prize in 2021.

Holland Taylor is opening up about her relationship with Sarah Paulson.
If you didn’t know, the 81-year-old The Morning Show actress and the 49-year-old American Horror Story actress have been together since 2015.
In a new interview, Holland explained why she and Sarah have no plans on ever getting married.
Keep reading to find out more…“I don’t think [we’ll get married],” Holland shared on Andy Cohen‘s SiriusXM show. “No. We’ve never talked about it with any interest.”
Holland then noted that recognizing their union legally “doesn’t seem to mean to [them] what it means to a lot of people,” but then clarified that they “would [tie the knot] if [they] wanted to.”
She went on to say that she and Sarah “have a wonderful resonance,” adding, “We are very interested in the same kinds of things, and yet we share big differences.”
Holland also admitted that their “big generational difference” does “worry” her for Sarah‘s sake.

Nicole Beharie received her first Emmy nomination this year, for her performance in the third season of “The Morning Show,” and she was sick in bed when she found out about it. “I had a little bout of Covid, and I was in bed after doing, like, a 16-hour day, and someone called me and was like, ‘Oh my God, girl!’ And I was like, ‘What’s happening? What’s going on?’ And then my manager called and I was like, ‘This is not funny!’ I actually didn’t believe it. And I was also under the weather, so it was like, ‘This is kind of not a funny joke.’ And then I looked it up myself and… it feels good,” she tells Gold Derby during a recent webchat (watch the full exclusive video interview above). “It’s a surprise for me. You know, this whole job has been a massive gift.

Based on the merits of its first two seasons, Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” was nominated for three of the four regular drama series acting Emmys, with its lone elusive category having been the supporting female one. Now, following its submission of seven featured ladies on the initial 2024 Emmy ballot, it has simultaneously scored a whopping four Best Drama Supporting Actress mentions, joining only three other series that have done the same or better.
The supporting actresses representing “The Morning Show” on this year’s final Emmy ballot are Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Karen Pittman, and Holland Taylor. Only Pittman has been part of the cast since the show’s inception, as Lee and Taylor first appeared in season two and Beharie was just added ahead of season three. Back in February 1952, the fourth-ever Primetime Emmy Awards were hosted by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, the married couple behind “I Love Lucy,” from the Cocoanut Grove at the now-demolished Ambassador Hotel. It was also the last time spouses oversaw the proceedings. And actually, only one duo has even hosted the Emmys this century — Michael Che and Colin Jost in 2018.
Why all the Emmy hosting trivia? It’s on my mind as we play the classic awards parlor game of “Who’s Gonna Host This Thing?” — and with less than two months before the Emmys take place on Sept. 15, we’re running out of time for this year’s emcee to properly prep for the gig. (Just ask recent Golden Globes host Jo Koy — sometimes you need more than a week or two to get ready.)

“Overnight!” That’s what Holland Taylor infamously shouted 25 years ago when she won her first career Emmy Award in Best Drama Supporting Actress for her guest-starring role as judge Roberta Kittleson on “The Practice.” (Watch the Emmy flashback video below.)
Can the esteemed actress now claim an Emmy bookend for playing Uba board chair Cybil Reynolds on Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show”? She’s competing yet again in the Best Drama Supporting Actress race and, just like in 1999, she’s billed as a guest star as opposed to a series regular, so Emmy history could repeat itself.

The Apple TV+ Emmy Award-winning series The Morning Show has added Emmy and Tony Award-nominee William Jackson Harper to its growing Season 4 cast in a major recurring role. He will play ‘Ben,’ the network’s self-assured and innovative Head of Sports.
The Morning Show explores the cutthroat world of morning news and the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning. Season 3 left the fate of Uba once again up in the air after Alex (Jennifer Aniston) manages to take down Paul Marks (Jon Hamm) by logjamming the sale of Uba to his tech company, Hyperion. But now, it appears Uba will be merging with another media company to keep the network afloat, which could spell layoffs and restructuring in Season 4.

It’s not unusual for an actor to receive nine Emmy nominations throughout their careers. This year alone, stars like Jennifer Aniston, Hank Azaria, Christine Baranski, Alex Borstein, Sterling K. Brown, Carol Burnett, Larry David, Donald Glover, Jon Hamm, Steve Martin, Bob Odenkirk, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short, Jean Smart, Holland Taylor and Kristen Wiig all hit nine or more career Emmy bids. However, Sarah Paulson stands alone in that all nine of her nominations came for nine different projects.
This year, Paulson is up for her guest stint on Prime Video’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” in which she plays an unnamed “Therapist” in the episode titled “Couples Therapy (Naked & Afraid).” She treats married spies John Smith (Donald Glover) and Jane Smith (Maya Erskine) at her luxurious home, and she gets into a bit of trouble when she reveals she’s been recording their therapy sessions.

The 2024 Emmy nominations were announced Wednesday, July 17 and Gold Derby editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon, Daniel Montgomery and Ray Richmond were up early to discuss their reactions to surprises (or lack thereof), snubs and early front-runners. Leading the charge are “Shogun” in the drama categories, “The Bear” in comedy and “True Detective: Night Country” for limited series.
“It was a great morning for FX,” Davidson begins, noting “Shogun’s” 25 bids, followed by “The Bear” with 23, the most ever for a comedy series. Other big contenders this year are “Only Murders in the Building” with 21 nominations and “The Crown” with 18 — up from just six last year. “I really loved the final season season, especially the series finale. It was fantastic,” Dixon comments.

Shogun leads the pack for the 2024 Emmys nominations, which were unveiled Wednesday morning. FX’s series landed 25 noms, including best drama series, setting several records in the process.
Also among the top nominees are FX’s The Bear (with 23 nominations, a comedy series record), Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building (21), HBO/Max’s True Detective: Night Country (19) and Netflix’s The Crown (18).
Overall, Netflix leads all nominees with a total of 107 noms (across 35 programs), followed by FX with 93 (nine programs), HBO with 91 (29 programs) and Apple TV+ with 72 (16 programs). Looking at conglomerates as a whole, The Walt Disney Co. — which has series and projects across FX, ABC, Hulu and Disney+ and others — notched a personal-best tally of 183 Emmy nominations.

The nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced live from Hollywood this morning, and "The Bear" and "Shōgun" appear to be the shows to beat. The two FX on Hulu series earned a stunning 23 and 25 nominations respectively, with "Shōgun" earning several cast members first-time nominations and "The Bear" breaking the Emmys' all-time-record for the most nods in one year in the comedy category. The show –- which, as genre purists will surely point out, is actually a dramedy that often leans towards drama –- beats previous record holder "30 Rock" by one nomination.
Elsewhere on the ballot, it's clear that the absence of HBO juggernaut "Succession" has left a void in the drama category, one that several shows are vying to fill. Period pieces "The Gilded Age" and "The Crown" put up a good showing, while sci-fi shows "Fallout" and "3 Body Problem" also found a spot in the Best Drama Category.

Two Emmy Award ceremonies in one year? The TV industry is going through a lot right now, but there’s something to be said for the shorter interval between Emmy celebrations in 2024 while awards season catches up with the timeline of 2023’s Hollywood strikes. January’s Emmy Awards honored television shows that completed their seasons between June 2022 and May 2023, and September’s ceremony will pick up right after that, with eligible shows premiering between June 2023 and May 2024.
Sheryl Lee Ralph (ABC’s “Abbott Elementary”) and Tony Hale (Netflix’s upcoming “The Decameron”) announced the nominees on July 16 for the 76th Annual Emmy Awards, which will take place on September 15.

The Bear and Shōgun dominated as the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced on Wednesday, July 17.

Earlier this year, “Succession” garnered a whopping 15 Primetime Emmy nominations: a bid for Best Drama Series and 14 for acting. The HBO show from Jesse Armstrong became not just the most-nominated drama of the year but the most recognized show that year, while the 14 acting bids tied its own record from the previous year.
But how about this year? Does any show have a chance of getting close to the dizzying heights of “Succession?” Well, probably not. But we’ve combed through our odds chart to work out which of the shows in contention for Emmy nominations will garner the most bids. We’re going to go through drama, comedy, and limited series/TV movie separately and here we’ll start with drama. Below, we ranked our predicted Best Drama Series nominees in order of least predicted total nominations to most.

A quarter century after she won a Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy on her first bid for “The Practice,” Holland Taylor returned to the category as a cast member of “The Morning Show.” Along with fellow 2024 nominee Christine Baranski (“The Gilded Age”), she joined a group of 15 other male and female recipients of drama supporting notices for multiple series. Tour our photo gallery to learn who else belongs to this special group.
Including Taylor, eight of the 17 performers on this roster won for at least one of their nominated roles. The lone dual honoree in the bunch is Tyne Daly, who clinched Best Drama Supporting Actress trophies for both “Christy” (1996) and “Judging Amy” (2003). Also listed are Jonathan Banks and Giancarlo Esposito, who were each recognized in the male category for three different series.

The 2024 Emmy nominations announcement being just one week away means that Gold Derby users have been shaping the odds in the 12 main acting races for over five months. At the end of June, eight of the initial dozen frontrunners could be credited with maintaining their top positions all season, but the same now applies to only six of them, all but one of whom are men.
The lone female February frontrunner left standing is Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”), whose victory on her second consecutive drama supporting actress bid seems quite assured. As of this week, she is generally expected to be joined in the winners’ circle by two-time comedy lead champ Jean Smart (“Hacks”), who started the season on top before being usurped by Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) a few weeks in. Now, two months after winning the favor of our Top 24 Users, Smart is every Gold Derby predictor subgroup’s first choice.

The Apple TV+ drama series “Sugar” has provided a showcase for a number of its stars, with the cast led by Colin Farrell but also including terrific turns from the likes of James Cromwell and Amy Ryan.
The neo-noir detective drama follows Farrell as a private investigator who searches for the missing granddaughter of a Hollywood producer. Created by “Thor” and “I Am Legend” screenwriter Mark Protosevich, the series is an homage-filled thriller that updates and pays dividends to the noir detective genre. Ryan shines in her role as Melanie Matthews, who used to be the step-daughter of the missing Olivia and develops something of a relationship with Farrell’s detective. Ryan, who younger viewers will mostly recognize from her days in “The Office,” demonstrates her impressive versatility as a performer here, as noted by critics.

Last Thursday marked the beginning of the annual 11-day period during which members of the TV academy cast their ballots for the Primetime Emmy nominations. Since there are fewer candidates in practically every category compared to last year, there are also fewer nomination slots up for grabs. Indeed, performers eligible for half of the 16 main acting awards must now fight harder to officially compete for them.
Those who were immediately cut from Gold Derby’s predicted acting lineups once the ballots dropped were supporting players Allison Janney (“Palm Royale”), Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”), Holland Taylor (“The Morning Show”), and Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”), non-continuing program leads Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”) and Tony Shalhoub (“Mr. Monk’s Last Case”), and drama series guests Sharon Horgan (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) and Jonathan Pryce (“Slow Horses”). Yang had broken into the comedy featured male lineup just a few hours earlier,...

Emmy, SAG and Golden Globe winner Sarah Paulson is now the proud new owner of a Tony, too. The actress best known for her work in the American Horror Story franchise took home the gold Sunday for Best Actress in a Play for her work in Appropriate.

Peter Dinklage became a force to be reckoned with at the Emmys during his tenure as Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” with the actor winning four wins from eight nominations. The cast of “Game of Thrones” was so good, however, that many of them are still Emmys forces even after the show ended and they’ve moved on to different projects. Let’s take a look at the “Game of Thrones” alumni who could compete at this year’s Emmys.

Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall with its third season and with it comes the show’s best cast to date. Nicole Beharie, Jon Hamm, Tig Notaro, and Stephen Fry all joined the cast while mainstays Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Billy Crudup all turned in their best work yet.
However, it’s the show’s supporting players, who have been here since day one, that makes the series so good. Karen Pittman is a prime example of that. The series depicts the behind-the-scenes drama of a US morning TV show and Pittman plays Mia Jordan, a key producer of said show. Pittman has always been an actress who possesses a powerful screen presence and that is true here, too. She captivates audiences (and the other actors) but also smartly sews vulnerability into a character who has some power in the show.

On August 9, 2017, a TV show premiered with two huge names attached — Stephen King (one of the most successful writers alive) and David E. Kelley (one of the most successful TV creators alive) — and no one saw it. That show? Mr. Mercedes, an adaptation of King’s 2014 novel, the first in a trilogy about a detective named Bill Hodges and the psychopath that got away. But while your mileage may vary when it comes to the book — and the work of Kelley, who created shows like The Practice and Ally McBeal — neither of them are to blame. The problem was that it premiered on the Audience Network, a pay channel owned by AT&T that nobody knew how to find.
After the Audience Network folded in 2020, Mr. Mercedes, which somehow managed to get three full seasons, rolled over to Peacock. A good thing, too, as it’s got a cast to die for — Brendan Gleeson,...

Holland Taylor and Ana Villafañe will star in the Off Broadway world premiere of Mario Correa’s new play N/A this summer, playing congresswomen of different generations in a production directed by Tony winner Diane Paulus.
Taylor will play “N,” the first woman Speaker of the House, and Villafañe will portray “A,” the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. The play is described as being inspired by real people and events, and although producers did not name names the descriptions more-than-strongly suggest Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
N/A will begin previews on Tuesday, June 11, at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center, with opening night on Sunday, June 23.
The official synopsis reads, “N/A is a whip smart battle of wills – and wits – between N, the first woman Speaker of the House, and A, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Inspired by real people and events,...

Upon sweeping the four main drama acting categories at the 2021 Emmy Awards, “The Crown” stars Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Gillian Anderson, and Tobias Menzies all joined a special roster of lead or supporting TV academy honorees who were not part of their shows’ original casts. As members of the expansive Netflix series’ second of three distinct ensembles, this quartet and their co-stars were replaced ahead of season five by a new group of actors, some of whom could be added to said exclusive winners club later this year.
According to Gold Derby’s odds, the performer from the sixth and final season of “The Crown” with the best shot at Emmy glory is supporting female frontrunner Elizabeth Debicki. She played the role of Princess Diana for two seasons, finishing the job started by younger season four cast member Emma Corrin. Fumi Nikaido could be one of several “Shōgun” stars who go on to earn Emmy nominations for their career-best work in the FX series.
Adapted from James Clavell‘s 1975 historical book of the same name, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks’ limited series follows multiple factions all vying for control over the five Regents in Japan at the end of the 16th century. Meanwhile, a British sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) begins a brand new life after becoming shipwrecked in Japan and entering the service of Hiroyuki Sanada‘s Lord Yoshii Toranaga.
Jarvis and Sanada are both competing for lead actor nominations and so, too, is Anna Sawai. Nikaido, meanwhile, is one of several supporting players who are looking for an Emmy citation for their work on the show. This year’s supporting actress candidates will not have to fend off reigning champ Jennifer Coolidge of “The White Lotus,” which is set to return in 2025 with an almost completely fresh cast. All nine acting nominees from the show’s most recent season are presumably finished playing their roles, as are 2023 featured female competitors Rhea Seehorn and J. Smith-Cameron from the concluded series “Better Call Saul” and “Succession.”

Based on the combined predictions of over 2,000 Gold Derby users, Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Walton Goggins (“Fallout”) are not generally expected to reap 2024 Emmy bids at this time. However, their chances of soon reaching predicted nominee status greatly improved over the past week thanks to their new category placements. The limited series actress’ odds jumped from 100/1 to 66/1 after she migrated from lead to supporting, while the dramatic actor went from 62/1 to 37/1 by making the opposite move.
Gladstone’s “Under the Bridge” cast mate, Riley Keough, joined her in switching from lead to supporting but still retains her original 100/1 odds. The other two performers who rose above their previous 100/1 odds this week are lead actress Julianne Moore (“Mary & George”) and featured actor Mark Ruffalo (“All the Light We Cannot See”), both of whom hail from limited series.
At this point, the non-continuing series races are proving to be the most dynamic ones overall.

When producers Robert L. Boyett and Thomas L. The result: The November 27, 1980, premiere of the zany, good-natured, and slightly lewd Bosom Buddies, starring newcomers Tom Hanks (who soon reached stardom with the 1984 movie Splash) and Peter Scolari. They played best friends Kip and Henry, who disguise themselves as gals named Buffy and Hildy to get cheap housing at a women-only hotel. Nearly every episode of the two-season series airs in this Catchy Comedy marathon.
