For too long, fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean series have been parched of thirst and unable to quench it. And while that’s a pretty complicated matter, one thing is for sure: Captain Hector Barbossa is no more. Unless, of course, Disney finds a way to bring him back…But what about Johnny Depp? Barbossa himself, Geoffrey Rush, has taken the helm to comment on both and the future of Pirates.
Speaking with Collider, Geoffrey Rush said that even though Barbossa sacrificed himself in 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he returns if a sixth Pirates entry does in fact get made. “I did come up with a good idea, which is classically based. Hamlet’s father comes back as a ghost, and I just said, ‘I can come back…’” Considering the number of ghosts who show up,...

As Disney plans a reboot of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, there’s a big question – will Johnny Depp’s iconic Captain Jack Sparrow return? Geoffrey Rush, who played Captain Hector Barbossa, voiced skepticism in a recent interview.
Rush says whoever replaces Depp has huge shoes to fill. He compared Jack Sparrow’s impact to Robert Newton’s Long John Silver character, adding Depp’s performance left a huge cultural mark. Rush also shared how Depp drew from rock stars like Keith Richards to create Sparrow’s unique swagger.
The “Pirates” movies have made over $4.5 billion total since 2003. But the last one in 2017 didn’t do as well. Disney wants a new sixth film and a Margot Robbie spin-off too. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer even said he wants Depp involved if it was up to him.
But with Depp’s recent legal issues, his return is uncertain. Fans online are...

Three things will remain to walk the earth for eternity when the apocalypse comes: Cockroaches, Keith Richards, and the Minions. Universal loves making money with Illumination‘s pill-shaped mischief makers, and after the success of Despicable Me 4, a third movie in the Minions franchise threatens parents’ wallets worldwide. Universal Pictures will release Illumination’s Minions 3 on Wednesday, June 30, 2027. Consider this your warning.
Despicable Me 4 is making a pretty penny at the box office, with $255M in ticket sales since its global launch on July 3. The impressive “out-of-the-gate” total brings the Despicable Me and Minions franchises to $5 billion combined! Who would have guessed that we’d see the characters rise to such prominence when the Minions appeared in 2010’s Despicable Me? In addition to leading movies, television specials, and video games, the Minions have a section of Florida’s Universal Studios theme park called Minion Land. That’s a...

Some summers are just hotter and poppier than others — and summer 2024 is turning out to be a wild one, with way more than its share of pop breakthroughs. Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter are conquering the world, Shaboozey hit Number One with “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” and two longer-running artists, Tinashe and Charli Xcx, are having the biggest moments of their careers.
In the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now, we take a deep look at a summer of pop magic, with Brittany Spanos and Rob Sheffield joining host Brian Hiatt for the discussion.

In 1967, The Beatles and producer George Martin gathered in the studio to record the song “A Day in the Life.” They were far from the only people in the studio that day. In their typical fashion, the band invited many of their contemporaries to join them as they recorded the song. According to one of the many people present, Martin seemed embarrassed by the spectacle.

David Puttnam, who was a friend of The Beatles, was present at the “A Day in the Life” recording session. He admitted that many of his experiences with the band were chaotic.

Since Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales‘ release in 2017, the IP has been sitting on ice, partly because of the allegations against Johnny Depp at the time. While it was previously reported that Disney might be inching to make a new entry with Margot Robbie at the forefront, rumors emerged stressing that Austin Butler might be in the pole position for the role.
However, according to new reports, despite the positive movement in Austin Butler’s scenario, hopes for witnessing both Robbie and Depp in the Pirates universe are far from over.

Which Nineties band once dropped $32,000 to buy a dealer’s entire supply of Ecstasy at once? The answer would’ve been hard to guess at the height of their fame, but it was the seemingly clean-cut dudes in Hootie and the Blowfish — who, as frontman Darius Rucker reveals in his excellent new book, Life’s Too Short: A Memoir, could out-party any band you can name. “When I’m dead, I’ll let them study my brain and tell you if I have any serotonin,” Rucker says.

This weekend marked the kickoff of the 2024 “Outlaw Music Festival Tour” (get tickets here), and though fans didn’t get to see Willie Nelson (who had to cancel his set “per doctor’s orders”), they did get to see Bob Dylan pull a wonderfully Bob Dylan move by playing an all-new set of ‘50s covers and recent deep cuts.
Dylan’s performances on Friday and Saturday night marked the first time in a few years that Dylan has made major changes to his setlist, which has mostly been populated by cuts from his 2020 album Rough and Rowdy Ways, as well as older original songs.

Dylan opened Friday’s show with a cover of Willie Dixon’s blues standard, “My Babe,” followed by renditions of Chuck Berry’s “Little Queenie,” The Fleetwoods’ “Mr. Blue,” Hank Williams’ “Cold, Cold Heart,” and Sanford Clarck’s “The Fool.

Billie Eilish held nothing back in her most recent Rolling Stone cover story — and amidst her many personal revelations, she also went deep on the making of her new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft. As Finneas, her brother, producer, and co-writer told Rolling Stone‘s Angie Martoccio — in a quote that was immediately picked up everywhere — the pair intended to make an “album-ass album,” their most cohesive statement ever. The songs twist and turn as they go, sometimes moving from balladry to tranced-out dance beats along the way, and...

When Linda Perry started allowing director Don Hardy to film her day-to-day existence, she didn’t realize the cameras would arrive just in time for her life to fall apart. Perry is the singer-songwriter-producer behind 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up,” Pink’s “Get This Party Started,” and Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” among other hits — and at first, Hardy was filming her artistic process as she began exploring the idea of writing for herself again. Then her mother got sick and eventually died, and Perry herself faced a diagnosis of breast cancer.

Sometime in 1984, when E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg saw a bunch of potential covers for Bruce Springsteen’s next album, he instantly noticed the Annie Leibovitz shot of the singer’s jeans-clad rear end. “My comment, jokingly, was ‘I like that one because that’s the view I always have,'” Weinberg says in the new episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. “Everybody laughed, and then they picked that shot. The Rolling Stones brought out Tyler Childers in Orlando on Monday night, June 3, for a special performance of their Sticky Fingers classic “Dead Flowers.”
Childers upped the number of guitars onstage to at least four, strumming his acoustic guitar to match Mick Jagger’s while Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards (as always) traded licks on electric. Childers also split vocal duties with with Jagger and added an extra layer of harmony to the country-inspired tune.

Let’s be real here: Pirates of the Caribbean hasn’t been the same since the original trilogy’s finale. The last two movies were mediocre at best, but we still watched them, and there was only one reason we did — Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow.
But while Disney stubbornly refuses to use that advantage in its quest to revive the franchise, the Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer disagrees.
PotC Boss Wants Johnny Depp Back
The notorious and highly controversial Depp vs. Amber trial locked many doors in front of the Pirates’ star’s face despite him winning in the court. Perhaps the toughest blow for the actor was Disney’s decision to boot him from all the franchises he played in, including Fantastic Beasts and Pirates of the Caribbean.
While Disney is hellbent on keeping Johnny Depp away from its movies, the PotC producer Jerry Bruckheimer hates this situation...

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Pirates of the Caribbean” producer Jerry Bruckheimer seemingly confirmed a couple of things. Firstly, it sounds like Johnny Depp is not returning for “Pirates of the Caribbean,” even if Bruckheimer wants it. Secondly, it seems Disney may indeed move forward with Margo Robbie’s film as well.
We also learned that Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the last “Pirates of the Caribbean” film in 2017 is writing the reboot. At this point the third act is great but the first and second act need more work.
He told EW, “I think he’s cracked it,” Bruckheimer remarks. “He’s got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we’ll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act.”
The script is in play, but does that mean Johnny Depp will return?
Bruckheimer makes it sound unlikely.

“Pirates of the Caribbean” producer Jerry Bruckheimer has provided more clarity on the current state of the Disney adventure franchise. He already teased in March that a total reboot was going to be the first “Pirates” movie out of the gate in the future because “it’s easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.” This reboot is now confirmed to have writer Jeff Nathanson attached. Bruckheimer announced the news in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Nathanson also wrote the screenplay for the last “Pirates” movie, 2017’s “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” which was directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. Rønning and Nathanson, as well as Bruckheimer, have reunited on the new Disney biographical drama “Young Woman and the Sea.”

Louis Vuitton is reviving its Core Values campaign with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
The campaign, shot by iconic photographer Annie Leibovitz, features the tennis champions, a rare off-the-court pairing, ascending to the summit of Italy’s Dolomites mountain range. The imagery fits the campaign’s tagline: “There are Journeys that turn into Legends.”
The newly released campaign features 42-year-old Federer and 37-year-old Nadal 3,000 meters high, standing tall on the mountain peak. In the imagery, Federer sports a Monogram Christopher backpack while Nadal is pictured with the Monogram Eclipse version.
For the campaign, Nadal and Federer are not competitors but instead companions for one another on the journey up the mountain — a visual metaphor for their careers which have been “marked by deep mutual respect and friendship,” according to the luxury brand.

Paul McCartney is the first U.K. musician to become a billionaire, it has been revealed, as the Sunday Times unveiled all the famous faces on its wealth-tracking Rich List for 2024.
The top 350 are not just your typical hedge fund owners and oil moguls — the list includes the King, the British Prime Minister and even a Catholic priest. But entertainment has its place on the Rich List. Here are some of the biggest names you might recognize.
None other than Salma Hayek is the most significant name in showbiz near the top of the list. She and her billionaire businessman husband François-Henri Pinault came in at an eye-watering 31st with 6.147 billion pounds in fashion and film. (Pinault is CEO of Kering, a luxury goods corporation that owns brands such as Gucci, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta and Alexander McQueen.)

Kendrick Lamar’s battle with Drake may or may not be over for good, but it’s clear that it was easily one of the greatest hip-hop beefs of all time, producing no fewer than nine separate songs — including Lamar’s current Drake-savaging Number One hit, “Not Like Us.”

Documentary tells the melancholy story of the model and actor at the centre of the 60s music industry but also weirdly peripheral to it
Anita Pallenberg endured many things, including the condescension of being labelled “muse” to the Rolling Stones. She became the girlfriend of Brian Jones who abused her, married Keith Richards who neglected her and then co-starred in the movie Performance with Mick Jagger, who fell unrequitedly in love with her. Now this documentary tells Pallenberg’s strange, sad, melodramatic story, with Scarlett Johansson voicing Pallenberg’s memories from her unpublished autobiography entitled Black Magic, discovered in manuscript after her death in 2017.
Born to a wealthy, cultured German family in Rome, Pallenberg did a bit of modelling and was then discovered by director Volker Schlöndorff. After she played a few minor movie roles, including opposite Jane Fonda in Barbarella, Pallenberg was cast in another role by the Rolling...

The Real Anita Pallenberg: “Keiths no angel. But neither am I.” Anita Pallenberg emerges as a figure much larger than just a muse or peripheral figure in the annals of rock history. Through decades overlapping some of the most transformative periods in modern music, Pallenberg’s life intertwined significantly with that of Keith Richards, among other Rolling Stones members. Yet, to define her merely by these relationships would be a disservice to the multifaceted individual she was. Early Life and Rise Born in war-torn Italy and raised through conservative, strict parenting, Anita Pallenberg’s journey from Europe to becoming a swinging ’60s

From “Fortnight” to “The Manuscript,” the latest episodes of Rolling Stone Music Now dive into every single track of Taylor Swift’s longest album ever, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. Along the way, we debate larger issues, including whether Swift intends all 31 tracks to be seen as the album proper, or if the latter half — added by surprise on the night of release — is actually more of a collection of bonus songs.

“The Fall Guy” is swinging into theaters this weekend, as are the indie masterpieces “I Saw the TV Glow” and “Evil Does Not Exist.” Fortunately, a handful of fun and intriguing titles are also hitting digital platforms, including a dynamic documentary about a rock ‘n’ roll linchpin.
The contender to watch this week: “Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg”

A muse, a mother, a fashionista, an actor, a rock ‘n’ roll icon — it’s hard to describe exactly why Anita Pallenberg remains such a compelling figure more than a half-century after the captivating blonde sang backing vocals on the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” and starred in movies like “Performance” and “Barbarella.”
The new documentary “Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg” delves into both the beautiful and tragic moments of her eventful life with the help of a treasure trove of home movies and interviews, as well as an unpublished memoir penned by Pallenberg and narrated by Scarlett Johansson. The footage is coupled with interviews of the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards, with whom she had a significant relationship, their children Marlon and Angela Richards, director Volker Schlondorff, who cast her in some of his films, and her former friends and associates.

Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg (Alexis Bloom and Svetlana Zill)
You can’t always get what you want, unless you are a Rolling Stones fan hungering for documentary deep-dives into the band’s storied history. Indeed, it is spectacularly serendipitous that Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg arrives just a few months after The Stones and Brian Jones. The latter doc, from Nick Broomfield, centered on Jones, the band’s founder and leader until Mick Jagger and Keith Richards snatched that mantle. Catching Fire and The Stones and Brian Jones cover much of the same ground, use some of the same archival footage, and even feature the same anecdotes from delightful Tin Drum director Volker Schlöndorff. Catching Fire and Brian Jones should, of course, be judged on their own merits, yet it’s impossible not to consider them in-tandem. The perspectives are obviously quite different, as are––to some degree––heroes and villains.

Over the past couple of decades, the Rolling Stones have looked for any reason to hit the road besides the release of a new album of original songs. They’ve launched tours celebrating their 50th anniversary, reissues of select archival records, the 2016 covers LP Blue & Lonesome, and their 60th anniversary. Some years they headed out on the stadium circuit for no particular reason whatsoever, knowing a Stones tour is a major event in and of itself.
But after a nearly two-year break from touring, the Stones emerged last year with the shockingly great Hackney Diamonds.

At the very moment Taylormania was hitting preposterous heights, threatening to turn the artist at its center into an untouchable icon, it turns out that the real Taylor Swift was spending her time between glittery three-hour concerts making some of her most fearless art. The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology is stuffed with the rawest, angriest, and most unguarded songs of Swift’s career – quite the opposite of the ingratiating, focus-grouped inoffensiveness that a skeptic might expect from an artist at her current level of visibility.

A new documentary will look at the legacy of model and actress Anita Pallenberg. In a clip from Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg, Pallenberg — voiced by Scarlett Johansson reading from Pallenberg’s unpublished memoirs — recalls a 1968 boating vacation she took with her then boyfriend, Keith Richards, as well as Mick Jagger and his girlfriend at the time, Marianne Faithfull. Footage from the trip, a voyage from Lisbon to Rio, has never previously been released. The film arrives in theaters on May 3 and will be available digitally the same day.

With a few lines in a guest verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s chart-topping hit “Like That,” Kendrick Lamar ignited his long-simmering cold war with Drake into what’s become the widest-reaching rap beef in years. Since then, it’s all gotten incredibly messy, starting with J. Cole recording an entire diss track about his erstwhile friend Lamar and then deciding to retract it and apologize — a fairly unprecedented move in hip-hop. We trace the whole saga on the latest episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast — go...

The Rolling Stones‘ self-titled debut album came out on April 16, 1964. Sixty years later, it’s still great rock ‘n’ roll! More than that, there’s a lot of interesting facts behind this impactful album. It also boasts one awesome collaboration.
The Rolling Stones barely wrote any of the album
The cornerstone of The Rolling Stones is the songwriting partnership of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Only one song from The Rolling Stones was credited to Jagger and Richards: “Tell Me (You’re Coming Back).” Most of the album is composed of covers, including songs by rock ‘n’ roll icons like Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly, and Chuck Berry, although two tracks are credited to “Nanker Phelge,” a collective pseudonym for the track.
While Jagger and Richards only penned one track for the record what a track it is. “Tell Me (You’re Coming Back)” is an impressive ballad that shows...

The 23rd edition of the Tribeca Festival is out with its slate of feature films including world premieres starring Kristen Stewart, Lily Gladstone and Jenna Ortega. Another high-profile title is Saving Casa Bonita, a new documentary about South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone restoring an iconic Colorado restaurant.
Stewart toplines Sacramento, a road trip comedy directed by Michael Angarano and also starring Michael Cera and Maya Erskine. Jazzy with Gladstone and Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreaux is a companion piece to 2023 indie drama The Unknown Country, in which Gladstone appeared just prior to her Oscar-nominated performance in Killers Of The Flower Moon. Ortega stars in director Tiffany Paulsen’s romantic drama Winter Spring Summer or Fall alongside Marisol Nichols, Percy Hynes White and Adam Rodriguez.
The documentary lineup, long a Tribeca strength, will feature comedy greats politically tinged pics ahead of the U.S.

On Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé mixes R&b, country, and some hard-hitting guitars, among many other elements, and as the artist herself is well aware, there used to be a name for that kind of American melange: rock & roll. She slyly acknowledges that fact with two Chuck Berry moments on the album, including a segment of “Maybellene,” his first hit, in which a Black genius helped invent rock & roll via revved-up country.
So, there’s an argument that Cowboy Carter — which the artist has made clear is a “Beyoncé album” rather...

Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock has been known to take as long as eight years between albums, but nearly three decades into his band’s career, he’s ready to pick up the pace. Three years after the release of the well-received The Golden Casket, he’s already recorded enough songs for a new Modest Mouse album with producers including Jacknife Lee and Dave Sardy, and intends to put one out by next spring. “In my early days of putting out records, I wrote music every fucking day,” he tells...

The Beatles were the most popular and important act of the British Invasion, but no classic rock fan should ignore the achievements of Donovan. Notably, John Lennon was a big fan of one of Donovan’s songs, and he played it over and over. The “Hurdy Gurdy Man” singer revealed what he thought of John as a person. John felt that he and Donovan were on a similar wavelength.
John Lennon loved 1 of Donovan’s folk songs
Donovan is known for two types of songs: psychedelic ditties like “Mellow Yellow,” “Atlantis,” and “Sunshine Superman,” and folk tunes such as “Colours,” “Catch the Wind,” and “Universal Soldier.” A 2018 article from Goldmine says John was taken with Donovan’s folk song “Turquoise.” He had a vinyl copy of the song and played it repeatedly on a personal jukebox he brought with him on tour.

Swifties have known since early February that Taylor Swift has a new album, Tortured Poets Department, due April 19, with some notably provocative song titles (“So Long London,” “But Daddy I Love Him”) and big-name guest stars (Post Malone, Florence Welsh). But since then, information on the album has been scarce, so fans have more than filled the void, passing around possibly fake leaked snippets of songs while pranking each other with both ChatGPT-generated lyrics and a ridiculous viral parody where an AI-generated Taylor sings lines like, “I’m so happy...

Magnolia Pictures has released a trailer ahead of the May 3 release of “Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg,” about the legendary muse to the Rolling Stones. Scarlett Johansson provides the voice for Pallenberg, based on the words of her unpublished memoir. Pallenberg’s children, Marlon and Angela Richards, and their father, Keith Richards are also included in the docu.
Alexis Bloom and Svetlana Zill direct the portrait of the rock ‘n’ roll actor, muse and mother who was called an “evil seductress” and accused of trying to break up the Rolling Stones.
The documentary screened at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, with critic Owen Gleiberman describing Pallenberg as the “beautiful and imperious scenester of the ’60s and ’70s, Hollywood actress and icon of scruffy-chic rock royalty, partner of Keith Richards, muse to several of the other Rolling Stones.”

Mick Jagger’s girlfriend once wrote a juicy memoir with many interesting anecdotes about classic rock stars from the Swinging ’60s. For example, she revealed what it was like hearing The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever” for the first time. She didn’t think it lived up to another song The Beatles released at the same time.
Mick Jagger’s girlfriend preferred The Beatles’ ‘Penny Lane’ to ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’
Marianne Faithfull was Jagger’s girlfriend. She had two hits in the United States: the Jagger/Keith Richards ballad “As Tears Go By” (which The Rolling Stones later recorded themselves) and a cover of The Beatles’ “Yesterday.” She’s far more prominent in her native United Kingdom.
In her 2007 book Memories, Dreams & Reflections, the “As Tears Go By” singer recalled meeting Paul for the first time. “He was just as the photographs,” she said. “Only he’d grown a mustache. His hair was shorter too.

Morgan Neville is an Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy winning documentarian who has a knack for going deep inside the worlds of various entertainment and media figures in memorable films like the Academy Award winner 20 Feet From Stardom about backup singers; Won’t You Be My Neighbor about Fred Rogers; The Best Of Enemies focused on the rivalry of William F. But in getting Steve Martin to finally commit to a documentary on his life and extraordinary career as groundbreaking stand up comedian to movie star, author, playwright, and musician, Neville got even more than he could have imagined. The Who’s Pete Townshend acknowledged in a new interview that he only continues to tour “for the money,” and says fans who “want to see The Who myth” might be better served waiting for a future concert of digital avatars.
Townshend’s comments came in a new interview promoting the Broadway revival of The Who’s Tommy. The article’s writer, Rob Tannenbaum, asked the guitarist/songwriter about the prospects of releasing any new music given that he has only put out three records (two with The Who and one solo) since 1983.
