Denny Laine, guitarist and songwriter for iconic rock bands The Moody Blues and Wings, has died, according to a post from his wife. He was 79.
Laine joined with Ray Thomas and Mike Pinder to form The Moody Blues in 1964. He sang lead on the group’s first big single, “Go Now,” which hit No. 1 in their native U.K. and broke the Top 10 in the U.S. He left the band in 1966, before the rest of its most popular songs were written. Still, Laine was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 as a member of the Moodys.
In the years after he left, Laine recorded as a solo artist and formed the Electric String Band with Trevor Burton (of the Move), Viv Prince (formerly of Pretty Things) and Binky McKenzie. Laine and Burton later joined the band Balls and played in Ginger Baker’s Air Force,...

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe charged down the home stretch of the Infinity Saga with "Avengers: Endgame," audiences were primed for three hours worth of falling action. The first part of this long-awaited finale (which kicked off ten years earlier with 2008's "Iron Man") concluded with Thanos activating the Infinity Gauntlet, which wiped out half of all life in the universe. We watched in shock as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Star-Lord, Scarlet Witch, Black Panther and others disintegrated into nothingness. Thanos had seemingly won the war. So this second part had to get all of the key players back in the game and stage the climactic battle that would end in triumph for our heroes.

It’s somewhat difficult to imagine Bob Dylan excitedly leading friends on a ghost hunt, but he did exactly that on a trip to England in the 1960s. After hearing a story about a haunted estate and the ghostly dog that roamed its grounds, Dylan and several musician friends decided to see the place for themselves. While there, Dylan became convinced that he heard the dog’s bark.

In 1966, Dylan was in Birmingham, England, and met up with The Spencer Davis group. Dylan mentioned that he was interested in ghosts and assumed there would be some good hauntings in England. Bassist Muff Winwood and his bandmates told Dylan about Witley Court, a nearby estate that was said to be haunted.

Paula Abdul isn’t giving up on a Janet Jackson team-up.
The multi-talented superstar was the genius behind choreography of the star’s breakout hits “When I Think of You”, “What Have You Done For Me Lately” and “Nasty” — but she couldn’t quite convince Jackson to join her newest project.
The two bumped into each other recently in Qatar of all places for fashion shows.
“It’s so funny because Janet called me to take part in her documentary and I said, Absolutely. And then I just went, I literally just ran into her three, four weeks ago in Qatar. I was visiting and doing this fashion council and all the fashion shows there,” she recalled to Et Canada’s Carlos Bustamante at her Los Angeles home. “And I said, ‘Janet, it’s just us standing here together and everyone’s flashing pictures.'”

Naomi Ackie gives audiences a glimpse into the life of Whitney Houston in director Kasi Lemmons’ new biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” and the new film is packed with a number of Houston’s hits.
Working with movement coach Polly Bennett and vocal coaches Tangela Large, Bridgette Jackson and Denise Woods, Ackie also underwent physical transformation with the help of numerous wigs and false teeth to cover the natural gap in her two front teeth.
Ackie doesn’t sing most songs in the film — she lip syncs to Houston’s perfect tracks instead — but she mimics Houston’s style of singing with great detail. She steps in for performances by Houston that were not recorded, such as “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah” and “Jesus Loves Me” from her choir-singing days. Ackie also portrays a nervous Whitney who is thrust onstage by her mother, who knows Clive Davis is in attendance,...

Billie Eilish has accomplished quite a lot at her young age in terms of awards records and milestones. Now she’s coming after another one. If she’s nominated for Record of the Year at the upcoming Grammys for “TV,” she’ll become just the second artist — and the first woman — to receive Roty noms for four consecutive years.
As it stands, four artists have earned nominations for three straight years. Eilish did it with “Bad Guy” (2020), “Everything I Wanted” (2021), and “Happier Than Ever” (2022), winning for the first two. Before her, Roberta Flack went on a run of three with “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” (1973), “Killing Me Softly with His Song” (1974), and “Feel Like Makin’ Love” (1975); she also won on the first two of her three bids. Then Steve Winwood earned noms for “Higher Love” (1987), “Back in the High Life Again” (1988), and “Roll with It” (1989); he won on his first nom.

The Qualifiers 2 episode of “America’s Got Talent” aired Tuesday, August 16 on NBC with 11 acts performing live on the big stage. One of those acts was 12-year-old-singer Madison “Maddie” Taylor Baez, who previously received Howie Mandel‘s Golden Buzzer during her audition of “Amazing Grace” when she was pretending to be a simple audience member. For her live show performance, Maddie took on Steve Winwood‘s “Higher Love,” a song that “no one would expect” from the talented tyke. Watch the “AGT” video above.
After her powerful performance, Simon Cowell addressed conspiracy theorists out there who thought Maddie’s audition was “rigged” because she came out of the audience. As the British judge explained, “The truth is, I was outside. I always run away when people are singing in the break, because they’re terrible. And I actually heard your voice and I thought, ‘Oh, at least someone is good.’ So everything that happened was genuine.

Nowadays it’s hard for any superhero show to stand out on television. Through three seasons on Netflix, however, The Umbrella Academy has discovered that it sure does help to have a banging soundtrack.
Fittingly for a TV series based on a comic written by a musician (My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way), The Umbrella Academy knows its way around a tune. Season 1 was highlighted by an instant classic group dance session to Tiffany. Then the 1963-set season 2 upped the ante with a whole host of period-appropriate songs. For season 3, Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman wanted to make sure music played just as big a role.
“I write a lot of songs already into the script. And I encourage my writers to do the same thing,” Blackman tells Den of Geek. “Sometimes they make sense in the scene. Sometimes they’re a little weirdly subversive. And sometimes it’s just...

Some Album of the Year victories at the Grammys fly somewhat under the radar. Others are like George Michael’s iconic “Faith.” The singer’s debut solo album was not only a massive success, but its victory at the Grammys cemented it and Michael’s legend status. In a way, “Faith’s” win was not only unconventional, but inadvertently may have opened the gates for queer artists at the award show.
Michael was obviously no stranger to success. He was part of the duo Wham! alongside Andrew Ridgeley from 1981 to 1986. With Wham!’s music being more lighthearted and targeting a younger audience, Michael felt the need to disband and pursue a more mature career in music, like many young teen-pop stars. As such, the duo separated in 1986, and Michael began working on his debut album, “Faith.” While in Wham!, he had decided to label himself as bisexual, although he kept...

In his new memoir, “Islander: My Life in Music and Beyond,” Chris Blackwell looks back on an unmatched career in the music business. Written with Paul Morley, the book recounts Blackwell’s boyhood growing up between Jamaica and London, crossing paths with the likes of Ian Fleming, Noel Coward, and Errol Flynn. His early success, however, began with a rebellion: After being expelled from an elite British school for bad behavior in 1954, at age 17, Blackwell moved back to Jamaica, and within five years, had founded Island Records. The label would...

Latin American jazz fusion icon Carlos Santana will be the subject of an expansive documentary directed by Emmy winner Rudy Valdez.
Imagine Documentaries is collaborating on the project with Sony Music Entertainment, which is co-financing and handling distribution. It will follow Santana’s journey from a 14-year-old street musician to a 10-time Grammy-winning global sensation, and feature unseen archival footage and tracks.
Valdez is the director of Sundance’s U.S. documentary audience award winner “The Sentence,” about the corrosive effect of mandatory minimum sentencing on convicts and their families. That project went on to win an Emmy and was released by HBO.
Currently filming, the untitled Santana doc is produced by Sara Bernstein and Justin Wilkes for Imagine, with Lizz Morhaim (“Rebuilding Paradise”). Imagine co-founders and Oscar winners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard are executive producers.

Twenty-two years ago, no one could avoid “Smooth,” that unlikely combo of Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas that won multiple Grammys, sold millions, and haunted all of us at weddings. But neither man seemed to take the idea of a sequel all too seriously. “We always talked about doing something,” Thomas says. “Usually I’d get a text from Carlos at 3 in the morning with Otis Redding doing ‘Day Tripper’ and Carlos saying, ‘We’re gonna do this song!’ It was always two guys drinking too much wine and having...

The 37th Grammy Awards, held in March 1995, were an especially influential ceremony thanks to Tony Bennett’s controversial Album of the Year win for “MTV Unplugged,” which led the academy to introduce their now-infamous and now-deceased nomination review committees to decide the ultimate contenders. But there was a more overlooked result that took place on the same night, and it was actually pretty rare: Sheryl Crow (“All I Wanna Do”) and Bruce Springsteen (“Streets of Philadelphia”) split the awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, respectively. That was actually the last time that two songs split those awards when both songs were nominated in both categories.
Prior to Crow/Springsteen, Record and Song of the Year had split like that only seven times:
1963: “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” by Tony Bennett (Record) and “What Kind of Fool Am I?” by Sammy Davis Jr....

Roger Hawkins, a drummer who powered the famed Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section on hits by Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and the Staple Singers, died Thursday following an extended illness. He was 75 and his death was announced by the Muscle Shoals Music Foundation on Facebook.
As part of the Muscle Shoals Music Section – affectionately known as the Swampers – Hawkins was the backbone of scores of pop, soul, R&b, and rock hits.
The 2013 documentary, Muscle Shoals, spotlighted the talent of the recording team. Hawkins most notable successes included working with Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett, on the massive hits Respect, Think, Chain of Fools, Mustang Sally and Land of 1000 Dances. He also played drums on the Staple Singers’ iconic I’ll Take You There.

If she wins again she’ll be only the third artist ever to prevail in consecutive years,...

“All I Need Is a Miracle” is not a Phil Collins song. But had he not become a solo star in the Eighties, giving his Genesis bandmate Mike Rutherford the time and incentive to launch the side project Mike and the Mechanics, the song would not exist. It was the second single off their 1985 self-titled debut and it became a big hit all over the world.

Nominations for the Grammy Awards are coming this Tuesday November 24, and there are categories that might set new records, either for wins or for nominations. Let’s look at a few.
DISCUSS2021 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year
Record of the Year
Multiple records could be broken in this category this year. First, if Beyoncé gets a nomination this year — whether it is for “Savage (Remix)” with Megan Thee Stallion, her own “Black Parade,” or maybe even both — she’ll break the record for the most nominations for a female artist in this category, which she currently holds in a tie with Barbra Streisand at five apiece. Beyonce’s previous nominations were for “Say My Name” (as a member of Destiny’s Child in 2001), “Crazy in Love” (2004), “Irreplaceable” (2008), “Halo” (2010) and “Formation” (2017).
Not only that, Beyoncé would also join a select list of artists who’ve had Roty nominations in three different decades.
