Best Overall Linen Sheets

Saatva Linen Sheets

Pros
  • Gets softer after each wash
  • Fits deep mattresses
  • Made without harsh or toxic chemicals
Cons
  • A lot of lint collects in the dryer

House Beautiful editors love Saatva so much that we have drifted outside the brand's mattresses (its bread and butter, if you will) to explore its other offerings, which include bedding. "I loved the sound of Saatva’s pure Belgian linen sheets, including how they are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified to be free of bad chemicals since I try to be conscious of that when shopping for bedding. We have an extra-deep Dux mattress, and few sheets fit it well," Senior Features Editor Elyse Moody says. "Saatva says its fitted sheets have deep pockets for mattresses up to 16 inches high, and this one fit really well. The sheets are generously sized without being too big."

As for the feel, arguably the most important element of any sheet, regardless of the material or brand, Moody is a fan but has some qualms. "The Saatva linen sheets feel more substantial and higher quality right out of the box. I laundered them once as directed, using cold water and low heat. After one wash, they weren’t stiff, but they still weren’t as soft as I'd personally like. They felt much softer after just one wash (and left a massive amount of lint in the lint trap, by the way)." She also recommends drying them with a wool dryer ball to minimize the wrinkles.

Best Value Linen Sheets

Quince European Linen Sheet Set

European Linen Sheet Set
Pros
  • Available in 20 colors
  • Affordable, high-quality materials
  • 100 percent European flax linen
Cons
  • Adding a flat sheet costs extra

"Once I became hooked on linen sheets but didn’t have the budget to replace everything with the fancy stuff, I was curious to try Quince’s European linen sheet set, which is anywhere from 50 to 75 percent cheaper than the premium brands," Deputy Managing Editor Olivia Hosken notes. She's not wrong. Eliminating the sometimes ridiculous markup is Quince's whole shtick: It's high-quality goods that are direct-to-consumer, so you never pay more than necessary. "My initial impression is that they are thicker than the Cultiver set, which makes them better for winter nights than summer scorchers, but they still have that satisfyingly scratchy linen texture. The sturdier fabric has held up with no holes after a couple of years of wear and tear (I have two cats and a toddler, so any bedding we have really gets put to use)." Plus, the Quince sheets come in over 20 colors, so if you are not #teamwhitesheetsonly like a lot of the editors are, you are sure to find a hue that matches your room.

Best Splurge Linen Sheets

Cultiver Linen Flat Sheet

Linen Flat Sheet
Pros
  • Pillowcases feature a simple envelope closure
  • Easy to launder
  • Free swatches available
Cons
  • Not ideal for pet owners

As she mentioned, Hosken also has the Cultiver linen sheets set, which she admits was her gateway to linen bedding. "I've had them for several years in heavy rotation and they are always the perfect texture and temperature—no matter the season," she says. "I don’t regularly make my bed in the morning, so I love how rumpled white linen sheets make an unmade bed feel like a vibe." The only drawback? "The lightweight linen might feel heavenly, but it hasn’t held up as well to routine use with two cats, and the bottom sheet now has a few holes. Linen, in general, also tends to clump up pet hair more so than sateen or cotton sheets, so that is something to keep in mind for pet owners." Anyone with dogs that shed or cats who paw, beware. Otherwise, these are a good, durable find.

Best Cooling Linen Sheets

Pottery Barn Belgian Flax Linen Sheet Set

Belgian Flax Linen Sheet Set
Pros
  • Available in 35 colors
  • Breathable and cooling
  • Won't soak up skincare
Cons
  • A bit scratchy at first

"I tested the chambray color, and it’s a lovely, textured light blue color that looked exactly like the photos," Associate Editor Lauren Gruber explains. "As I'm used to sleeping on cotton or bamboo viscose sheets, I was initially skeptical that these linen sheets would feel scratchy. But after washing, they immediately felt softer to the touch. Although they took some getting used to, I ended up being pleasantly surprised by how breathable and soft these sheets were. They feel like sleeping on a cozy T-shirt and my partner and I both noticed that they were more cooling than our other sheets, which was especially useful during a heat wave in New York City," she adds. Another benefit of linen? It's not a particularly absorbent material, so if you like to slather creams and oils on your skin before bed, you won't wake up to find them covering your pillowcases.

Best Soft Linen Sheets

Brooklinen Linen Sheet Set

On Sale
Linen Sheet Set
Pros
  • Never scratchy
  • Hold up well over time
  • Available in six sizes and 15 colors
Cons
  • Wrinkle easily

"My experience with Brooklinen sheets was the first time I had ever used linen sheets. What can I say, I've been a cotton girl most of my life," Assistant Editor Meghan Shouse admits. "However, I fell in love with this set the moment I slipped into bed. They are soft and breathable, and I really enjoyed the change in texture from my usual cotton." Plus, unlike some sheets, which initially feel a bit rough before the first few washes, Shouse says these ones were soft from the start. "I’ve had them for a while now, have washed them many times, and have never dealt with any type of shrinkage either," she adds. "Personally, I don't use the linen pillowcase because I sleep with a silk one, but my partner enjoys the feel of the one from the set." No sheets are perfect, though, and Shouse notes that these ones do wrinkle quite easily. "While I still switch out between my cotton and linen sheets, I think in the future, I'm going to collect more linen ones than any other fabric."

Best Durable Linen Sheets

The Company Store Relaxed Linen Bed Sheet Set

Pros
  • Breathable and cooling
  • Easy to clean (on low or high heat)
  • Fits 16-inch mattresses
Cons
  • Rough before washing

"I tested The Company Store's Linen Sheets for two weeks, and overall, I'm quite pleased. I washed them on cold and dried on high at the laundromat (against care instructions!) and they remained in good condition," Senior Digital Editor Melanie Yates says. "Initially, these sheets are not silky-soft but are smooth and comfortable. While they do wrinkle easily, the sheets tend to flatten out after a few nights of use. I found their porous weave to be perfect for summer, allowing cool A/C air to pass through easily," she adds. As a linen devotee, Yates has slept on her now-well-worn Bed Threads sheets, and she notes that these add a nice contrast to her years-old ones. "Linen's initial roughness softens over time, becoming incredibly cozy, and I look forward to experiencing that transformation with these sheets."

Best Moisture-Wicking Linen Sheets

West Elm European Flax Linen Sheet Set

European Flax Linen Sheet Set
Pros
  • Doesn't absorb skincare
  • Breathable and cooling
  • Available in 29 colors
Cons
  • Scratchy straight out of the box

"I washed my new linen sheets per the instructions on the tag: Machine wash warm and tumble dry on low. There wasn't any shrinkage that I can see, which is great!" says Visual Assistant Natalie Boyce. "I typically run warm while I sleep, which is usually my biggest concern when picking out sheets. These, however, were very breathable and I didn't wake up in a sweat like I have with other sheets. These linen sheets were a major plus—especially during the New York City heatwave. Overall, I was quite impressed with the quality—they feel very durable and luxurious," Boyce adds.

She did, however, have a qualm or two that she admitted would take some getting used to. The first was that these sheets, like most linen ones, were a bit scratchy right out of the box. "They wrinkled a little too, but not too bad," she says. A big benefit, though, is that none of her night creams soaked into the pillowcases. "I use a nighttime face product that has bleached my pillowcases in the past, so I specifically got the white linen sheets for that reason. These didn't soak up any product I had on my face."

Best Breathable Linen Sheets

Thuma Linen Sheet Set

Linen Sheet Set

Pros
  • Breathable and cooling
  • Won't absorb skincare
  • Easy to launder
Cons
  • Fitted sheet is slightly transparent

"I have always been a linen sheet skeptic. The last ones I had shed like crazy and left my bedroom in a seemingly permanent layer of pink linen dust," says SEO Editor Kate McGregor. "But the craze is warranted, and thanks to Thuma (and New York’s recent heat wave), I think I’m ready to buy back in. These sheets were breathable, but I found that I was comfortable and kept warm enough with just a top sheet as the layer. I didn’t notice any staining or wet spots due to my nightly Aquaphor layer." Before sleeping on them, though, McGregor washed them in a load with a few other pillowcases and her terry towels—no issues. "When making my bed, I noticed the flat sheet was a bit more transparent than expected, so I could see the black hue of my mattress through the layer. The pillowcases and flat sheet didn’t have this problem, though."

Best Organic Linen Sheets

The Citizenry Stonewashed Linen Sheet Set

Pros
  • Gets softer with each wash
  • Available in 15 colors
  • Made in Portugal using French flax
Cons
  • Not available in twin

After sleeping on his linen sheets for a few weeks, Senior Commerce Editor Heath Owens says, "These are airy, breathable, and textured. I love the graphite thin stripe, and because the stripe is woven in, it gives them an even more dynamic texture." All of The Citizenry's products are made by artisans around the world, and these sheets are made in a family-run textile mill in Portugal. Owens says, "I can feel the Portuguese quality. They're my favorite linen sheets that I've tried! They're a really lightweight weave, which keeps them breezy and airy instead of scratchy. They also really do get softer with every wash."

How We Tested the Best Linen Sheets

line break

Several of my fellow House Beautiful editors and writers and I tested the aforementioned linen sheet sets in our homes for a period of at least two weeks to give us enough time to review them properly. A few of us, however, have slept on our beloved bedding for more than a year, so if we're here recommending them after all of this time, you know they're good. We'd also like to think that their age is a real testament to their durability and longevity. When testing, we ran them through the wash according to the instructions, made our beds, slept on them for, like we said, at least two weeks, and recorded our thoughts.

We would also like to preface our list by saying that what some of us may consider a con, someone else may consider a pro. So, if you want to get a real sense of feel, make sure to look for the type of linen used, which will give you a better idea. Luckily, we just so happened to love all of the sheets we tested and plan on keeping them in our rotation for, well, as long as they'll last.

What to Look for When Buying Linen Sheets

line break

Breathability: The main reason people tend to love linen—aside from how beachy it looks and feels—is because it's naturally breathable, which makes it an ideal summer fabric. Some sheets claiming to be linen, however, aren't 100 percent linen. Instead, they're a linen blend. Every added fiber will weigh the sheets down, making them feel less airy and breathable. So, when buying linen sheets, make sure they're made entirely of linen and no additional fabrics.

Laundering Instructions: The only sometimes annoying thing about linen is it isn't as easy to care for as traditional cotton. Though you can wash and dry most linen sheets, you may see a tiny bit of shrinkage after the first cycle in the dryer. Also, as you may have noticed from most of our reviews, linen tends to wrinkle, so if that's going to bother you, linen may not be the fabric for you. Otherwise, feel free to steam or iron them after taking them out of the dryer, but as soon you sleep on them, you'll see some wrinkles.

Linen Varieties: There are a lot of linen varieties out there, and as long as they're pure linen, one is not better than the other. Some people like super-soft linen, and others like that more textured feel that is often associated with the fabric. So, depending on what you're looking for, you'll buy French linen, Belgian linen, or what's called European linen—all of which are great. We'll break down the differences next.

What's the Difference Between French and Belgian Linen Sheets?

line break

As we said earlier, as long as the linen products you are buying are 100 percent linen, you're good to go, but the linen variety will affect how it feels. According to Bed Threads, "Flax is cultivated in many parts of the world, but the best flax grows along the famous Western Europe flax belt—a stretch of Europe that spans across Belgium, France, and the Netherlands—so the main difference between Belgian and French linen is basically the country the flax originated from." French linen is durable, gets softer with both age and washes and is easy to care for. Belgian linen is similar, but some may say it's more breathable and has a higher absorbency than its French counterpart, so if you sweat in your sleep, go with Belgian linen.
