The Best Outdoor Dining Tables, According to Testing and Reviews

It's time to plan that al fresco dinner party.

By

For anyone who may argue that outdoor dining tables come second to their indoor counterparts simply because they live outside, we’ll have you know that the furniture you use on your patio is just as important. After all, if you cherish your outdoor space, you may as well put as much thought and effort into designing it as you would with your interiors. Interior designers John Stivale and Steven Graffam, co-founders of New York City-based Stivale Graffam Home, would certainly agree. "Outdoor dining tables are often one of the largest investments you can make for your outdoor space," Stivale notes. "Investing in the perfect outdoor dining table will enhance the way you and your guests enjoy your outdoor environment. Much like indoor dining areas, your outdoor dining space is symbolic of gathering and entertaining, and the dining table is always the anchor."

Ahead, you'll find more than 10 outdoor dining tables that are equally durable and stylish, so if you consider yourself a summer hostess in the midst of planning a pool party or al fresco feast, shop these beautiful finds. "While these pieces command high price tags, selecting the right piece can serve as the foundation for the rest of your outdoor design, both regarding function as well as aesthetics," Stivale adds. Pros
  • Available in multiple sizes and colors
  • Works indoors and outside
  • Weight of the tabletop keeps surface firmly in place (no hardware is needed)
Cons
  • Delicate surface

"I love this table. I have had it on the patio of my Boca Raton home for almost three years now. The top is technically stone, but it looks and feels like concrete," tester Lisa Eisenberg says. That said, it's not concrete; it's porous stone, so you may want to grab a trivet if you're serving a hot dish on your table. "I am not super precious with it, but I have noticed a few barely-there hairline fractures, which look more like patina than damage," Eisenberg adds. This table is also available in multiple sizes and colors. "It is so elegant and fits quite a few chairs around it. Normally I have five, but seven can easily fit around it if I have people over. I just made sure to buy chairs without bulging arms."

Pros
  • Compact for small spaces
  • Comes in a set
  • Arrives fully assembled
Cons
  • Too small for more than two people

If your only source of outdoor space is a small balcony, you'll need a smaller dining table to match. Commerce Writer Sarah Maberry loves this foldable option from Winston Porter. "As an apartment dweller, space is a luxury, so I love that both the table and chairs can fold up any time I need extra space. Plus, it makes it super easy to store in the winter," Maberry says. "It's lightweight enough that I've pulled it inside for extra seating during dinner parties, too." If you're in a hurry to enjoy your outdoor space, know that this set, which includes a table and two matching chairs, comes with free one-day shipping. It also ships fully assembled, so there's no need to break out your tool kit.

Pros
  • Available in multiple sizes
  • Made entirely of durable teak
  • Both sizes seat at least eight
Cons
  • Extremely heavy

"Our designer actually found this table at the Terrain outlet outside Philadelphia last summer—score! There's a seven-foot version and a 10-foot version; we went with the 10-foot one because my husband has a big family, and it's not unusual for us to have 12 people over for dinner," says Senior Features Editor Elyse Moody. "The teak spent last summer and fall outdoors before we moved it in for the winter (note: it's super solid and heavy, so this might be a three-person job), and it's weathering nicely." If you're trying to choose a wood that will fare well outside, teak is definitely a good pick because it's naturally extremely durable.

Pros
  • Matching chairs available
  • Available with or without umbrella hole
  • Comes in multiple sizes
Cons
  • One of the more expensive options on the list

"When my parents moved to Asheville, North Carolina, they made it their priority to create an indoor-outdoor space, starting with this covered deck that sits just outside the kitchen," Associate Shopping Editor Jessica Cherner says. "There is a sitting area, a fireplace, a grill, and, of course, a place to gather. This dining table looks like super-smooth wood, but it's actually aluminum, making it ideal for an outdoor area. Though the dark color would pair well with any chairs, my parents opted for the matching ones to make the dining space look a bit more cohesive," she adds. Get it with a hole for a patio umbrella or leave it covered, depending on your space and your needs.

  • Available in multiple colors
  • UV- and rust-resistant
  • Easy assembly
Cons
  • Reviewers say the tabletop is on the thinner side

With its matte black finish and sleek flared legs, you'd never guess this table is actually plastic, the perks of which include inherent weather-resistance and a super easy clean-up. It's a cinch to assemble, too: All you have to do is screw in the base and you're done. "I love everything about this table. Beautiful enough to use inside, but it's durable and gorgeous outside. Florida weather has no effect on this table," one reviewer said. It also comes in a bright white and a burgundy-brown.

Best Terrazzo Outdoor Dining Table

Arhaus Edgewater Outdoor Terrazzo Dining Table

Pros
  • Available in two sizes
  • Base is reinforced with metal frame for added stability and durability
  • Polished, sealed, and coated with a clear polyurethane for added protection
Cons
  • Rough edges or marks in the edge profile are commonly found in terrazzo surfaces

"It might seem a bit odd, but I was adamant about not having a pole (or space for a pole) in the middle of our outdoor dining table. If it’s not sunny, then you have this pole cutting off the person on the other side. No thanks! We got a cantilever umbrella to manage the sun so I could have the table I wanted," Director of Special Projects Carisha Swanson notes. "I fell in love with this pedestal table because I think round tables are the best for conversation and I loved the terrazzo top." This one is made of composite concrete with chips of marble and stone, and the base is fully concrete, so on a gusty day this isn’t going anywhere. "Sometimes terrazzo can be too big, but the subtly of this design is perfection. I went with the 60-inch round to fill in our little corner, but it does come in a 48-inch size for more petite spaces," she adds. Finish the look with Arhaus' Jagger chairs.

Pros
  • Includes a sectional, two stools, and a dining table
  • Lightweight and easily portable
  • Seating includes a detachable waterproof cover
Cons
  • Assembly made easier with a power drill

Sometimes buying things in a set is the best solution. Case in point: this four-piece outdoor dining set that includes a single L-shaped sectional, a dining table, and two low stools. They go together, but not so much that it looks contrived. "Super happy with these pieces, from the table to the size of the sectional to the little ottoman stools. It's cozy and lightweight, but it's very sturdy. I can move it all over my patio by myself," a happy customer said. "Assembly is not hard, but made much easier with a hex drill bit."

Best Outdoor Dining Table for Small Spaces

Heidi Outdoor Bistro Set
Pros
  • Available in multiple colors
  • Includes two matching chairs
  • Easy assembly
Cons
  • Metal gets hot in the sun

Looking for a one-and-done solution to outfitting out your backyard? The Novogratz's sunny yellow bistro set has two chairs that come with the powder-coated steel table. Ideal for a smaller space, the group is just the pop of color your patio is craving. "It's a very cute set and pretty sturdy. It's been outside for a few months now and still intact. We did add some seat cushions because it does get cold and hot in the sun and shade, respectively. I don’t have a single bad thing to say about it," one reviewer said.

Concrete never goes out of style. It's also one of the durable materials you can use for outdoor furniture. Give this cool piece the spotlight in your outdoor space, and offset the industrial vibes by peppering in some greenery and softer, natural textiles. It wipes clean with a cloth and mild soap, and is weather-resistant, so you don't have to worry about stains. One reviewer said, "The Felton dining table is versatile for indoor or out. Expandable Dining Table
Pros
  • Hand-built with sustainably harvested teak

Cons
  • Heavy (177 pounds)

It doesn't get more classic than this handcrafted teak outdoor dining table. It's also kiln-dried to prevent expansion and shrinkage in inclement weather. Bonus: It's expandable to accommodate even more guests than the allotted eight. "This table just arrived and I love it. With children and grandchildren, we are a family of 12. I wanted an outdoor table large enough for all of us to gather, but small enough to accommodate intimate gatherings," one reviewer explained. "This is truly perfect! The way the table extensions (which are stored beneath the table) simply flip up is amazing design."

How We Chose the Best Outdoor Dining Tables

line break

When I was thinking about the best outdoor dining tables, I first looked to my own personal experience with them, namely the ones at my parents' home in Asheville, which is a very outdoorsy city in North Carolina. Next, I turned to my fellow style- and comfort-driven editors, most of whom live in New York City, where outdoor space is very limited. Though some of us had managed to squeeze an outdoor table onto our small terrace, quite a few have much bigger outdoor dining tables in their non-New York City homes. Nearly half of the tables we recommend live in our own homes, so you can trust that these are some of the best on offer. Lastly, I consulted the internet: what are other style- and comfort-driven folks out there liking right now? Any outdoor dining tables that aren't our own are highly rated and backed by hundreds (and in some cases, thousands) of five-star ratings. No matter which retailer you choose to shop, you can rest assured that, if it's on this list, it comes highly recommended by design enthusiasts.

What to Look for When Buying an Outdoor Dining Table?

line break

Material: Though there are a couple of factors to consider when shopping for outdoor furniture, material is arguably the most important one. If you get a dining table that isn't made to live outside in unpredictable weather, you'll notice it fall apart quicker than it should. Luckily, all of the tables on our list are made to survive outdoors, so you won't have to worry about them degrading, but if you want the best material on offer, go with teak or concrete. Both materials are naturally durable and can withstand pretty much everything. Another material that has managed to captivate the design community is polywood. "Polywood is a great option for outdoor furniture due to its extreme durability. It's a composite material composed of recycled and reusable plastics, made to look like wood," Graffam explains. "It is weather-resistant and very easy to maintain, making it a great option for outdoor environments."

Size: Size is more of a personal preference than material because the lifespan of your table won't really be impacted if you have a two-person bistro table or a 12-person farm table. "Overall, size is often the first determining factor when configuring the layout of both outdoor living and dining spaces," Stivale says.

What Is the Most Durable Material for Outdoor Dining Tables?

line break

You can't go wrong with wood, metal, resin, or, of course, polywood as they're all made to last and hold up in even the most inclement weather. "There are so many durable materials now available for outdoor dining tables, the options are truly endless. From teak to synthetic rattan, and from powder coated metal to composites of all colors, there are amazing options," Graffam notes. "In selecting the most durable table for your environment, you should consider both the climate, as well as how often the dining table will be utilized. For example, in coastal environments surrounded by salt water and high levels of humidity, we find that cast fiber-cement or concrete tables are most durable to battle the elements."

Can You Put an Indoor Dining Table Outside?

line break

The simple answer: no. Though you can definitely use an outdoor table inside, you can rarely use an indoor table outside because it's not designed to withstand the elements out there. Depending on where you live, you'll be exposing your table to everything from intense rain to desert heat, which will definitely contribute to its demise. The good news though, is that there are so many outdoor tables out there, so you can likely find what you're looking for. Otherwise, hold out until you find it. There's no harm in slow decorating, especially if it's something you're investing in. Plus, outdoor dining tables are made with outdoor-friendly materials and also finished in an extra protective layer, two elements that don't usually come with indoor-only tables.
