Sleep is more important the older you get, yet it becomes increasingly difficult to achieve quality rest—especially if you aren't sleeping alone. Sharing a bed can be so challenging that people are even opting for sleep divorce. Thankfully, my wife and I weren't quite there yet, but I'm not sure how many more nights we could've taken sleeping on a cheap foam mattress with a giant sag in the middle. You certainly don’t get the best sleep when you slowly slide together in the center of the bed throughout the night.

The sag also likely contributed to the back pain I've developed in recent years, so when I had the opportunity to test Saatva's Classic mattress, I jumped (not literally, unfortunately) at the chance to bring it into our home. Saatva is endorsed by chiropractors thanks to its patented lumbar support technology, and they even designed a mattress specifically for back pain that my colleague swears by. (Read more about her experience here.) The Classic mattress boasts several of the same features the Saatva Rx includes at a more affordable price point, so if, like me, your lucky partner doesn't suffer from the same aches and pains, it's the perfect compromise.

My wife and I like our mattresses on the stiffer side, but we normally add a pillow top for a little softness, so we ordered the Saatva Classic in Luxury Firm, which boasts "the perfect balance of cushioning and uplifting support" thanks to its combination of memory foam and coils. It is also designed to replicate the feel of a luxury hotel bed because who doesn’t love a hotel bed? The only hesitation we had with swapping our foam mattress for a hybrid version was motion transfer—we also have a 65-pound dog that likes to come in and out of our bed throughout the night—but I'm happy to report the three of us have been sleeping better than ever for the last few months.

Ahead, I break down all the details you need to know about the Saatva Classic model, and if it's right for you.

Saatva is offering House Beautiful readers an exclusive promo starting Friday, June 28 through July 6: take $400 off a $1,000+ deal (for mattresses only). Discount will be automatically applied at checkout if you click on any of our Saatva links.

Delivery and Install

I live in a four-story walkup building on a busy block in Chelsea, so I've always ordered bed-in-a-box mattresses. Little did I know, there was a much better and easier way to have a mattress delivered to your home. Saatva's complimentary white glove delivery service is seamless. They gave me a four-hour window, and the mattress showed up right on time. I just sat back, relaxed, and let the two delivery men do their work.

Saatva also offers to take away the mattress you're replacing free of charge, so we finally said goodbye to our old dippy mattress. This is a huge game changer for anyone who lives in New York City and would have to wait for a special pickup before they could discard their old mattress. After the delivery team set up the full-sized mattress, they removed all the new packaging as well as our old mattress. They were incredibly kind and were in and out of our home in only 15 minutes.

Saatva Classic Firmness Review

As mentioned, my wife and I prefer a firmer mattress but always end up adding a topper to soften it a bit, so the Luxury Firm option Saatva offers felt like the sweet spot for our needs. Here's a breakdown of the three different options to help you find the best comfort level:

  • Plush Soft: Saatva gives this a 3/10 on their firmness scale. The extra softness is due to additional padding on top of this version. The brand says it is ideal for "side sleepers who need extra pressure relief of the hips and shoulders" and "lighter-weight people who often find mattresses to be too firm."
  • Luxury Firm: With a 5-7/10 firmness rating from Saatva, the brand says this mattress is the "perfect balance of cushioning and uplifting support" and deems it the best option for "couples who can't agree on firmness." It's also recommended for all sleep positions and designed to feel like a luxury hotel bed (which I can co-sign after three months of sleeping on it as a combination sleeper.)
  • Firm: If you prefer an extra-firm mattress, Saatva gives this mattress an 8 on its firmness scale and says it will provide the feeling of lying on top of a mattress instead of sinking in. The brand touts "balanced resistance that's never hard on the back and joints" and claims to be ideal for back and stomach sleepers as well as heavier body types.

Saatva Classic Mattress Construction

Every Saatva mattress is made to order and never compressed and stuffed into a box. After buying many vacuum-sealed mattresses in the past, I don’t think I could go back. The five different layers in the construction provided me with the perfect balance of support and softness. Here's how they work from top to bottom:

  1. The breathable pillow-top sleep surface, made of hypoallergenic organic cotton and treated with an antimicrobial to prevent bacteria growth, gives you additional lumbar support in the center third of the mattress.
  2. The high-density memory foam lumbar crown offers more lower-back support and pressure point relief while keeping your spine in proper alignment.
  3. Pocketed coils made from durable 14.5-gauge recycled steel contour to your body to relieve pressure and respond to your body's movement to alleviate motion transfer. The coils are stronger in the center third of the mattress to support the majority of your body weight while you sleep.
  4. High-density foam rails offer edge support to make getting in and out of bed easier.
  5. The base coil unit, made of 13-gauge tempered steel, prevents sagging and creates airflow.

Motion Isolation

The mattress has great bounce without being bouncy, something I didn't think was possible with a coil mattress until trying Saatva's Classic. The pocketed coils really do reduce motion transfer, and as you can see above, this mattress passed a water glass test. With an active 65-pound dog and a restless wife, I didn't think sound sleep would be possible, but I am happily surprised.

Edge Support

Edge support is important when you are regularly moved to the side by a large dog. Not to mention that getting in and out of bed becomes more and more of a challenge the older you get, with or without back problems, in the case of my wife and I. The Saatva Classic's high-density foam rails worked their magic to keep us from falling off the bed at night despite our dog's best efforts, and I have yet to struggle with getting up in the morning for any reason other than wanting to stay in my comfortable new bed.

Temperature Regulation

I tend to sleep hot but am happy to report I am sleeping cooler than I have on my previous memory foam mattresses. This is partially thanks to the pillow top, made from breathable, hypoallergenic organic cotton, and the dual-coil design of the mattress base, which provides more airflow to create a cooler sleep experience.

Off-gassing

One of the biggest benefits that comes with Saatva's mattresses is that they are proudly "never stuffed in a box." They are also made to order and use a natural, plant-based thistle pump barrier instead of the toxic flame retardants other bed-in-a-box brands use that omit odor. All in all, this means that your Saatva is ready to rest upon as soon as it's delivered.

My Final Verdict on the Saatva Classic

I would highly recommend Saatva's Classic mattress. After buying many mattresses over the years, the Saatva Classic has provided the best overall quality and service. Starting with the seamless white glove delivery and removal of my old dippy mattress to now having achieved three months of sound sleep, I will never again purchase a mattress that comes vacuumed in a ball. I love the balance of back support from the high-density memory foam in the center, the pocketed coils throughout, and the soft pillow top that conforms to your body while still providing support. It's a dramatic difference if you previously were sleeping on a simple foam mattress like we were.

The biggest difference I've felt is the lack of motion from my restless partner and my large dog, which always needs to walk in circles before plopping down. She also likes to come and go frequently throughout the night (my dog, not my wife), but I am finally no longer woken up by their movement. That alone is the best endorsement I can give anyone sharing a bed.

      Saatva Classic Mattress FAQs

Is Saatva Classic Worth the Money?

If you are ready to invest in a quality mattress, the Saatva Classic is definitely worth the money. The Saatva Classic price ranges from $1,395 to $2,990, which is a great value for a five-layer luxury mattress designed to align your spine and alleviate pain and pressure while you sleep. Plus, the Saatva Classic comes with white glove delivery, a 365-night trial, and a lifetime warranty, so you are getting more than your money's worth. Not to mention that if you instead opt for a cheaper bed-in-the-box alternative, you'll likely find yourself needing to replace it more quickly for a quality mattress like the Saatva Classic.

Who Is the Saatva Classic Mattress Best For?

Saatva Classic comes in three different firmness levels to help sleepers find their right fit: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. The Luxury Firm is great for any type of sleeper, making it a great option for couples that prefer different mattress firmness levels. Our editor is a combination sleeper and found the Luxury Firm to work great for both back and side sleeping. If you prefer a firmer mattress, the Firm option is best for back and stomach sleepers. The extra padding in the Plush Soft is best for side sleepers as it provides additional pressure relief on the hips and shoulders. The firmness levels also correlate with weight, so lighter sleepers will prefer the Plush Soft, whereas heavier sleepers will rest best on the Firm option. Lastly, this mattress is chiropractor-approved and designed to align your spine and relieve pressure while you sleep, so anyone hoping to prevent or relieve back and joint pain will benefit from this mattress.

How Long Do Saatva Mattresses Last?

Mattress longevity varies by type, but according to Saatva, an innerspring mattress like the Classic should last for 6 to 8 years on average. The Classic is designed with two separate layers of coils to add durability and prevent sagging over time, but if you do experience issues with your mattress, Saatva offers a lifetime warranty.
