Background

Antonio Polanco, M.D., is a cardiac surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and an Assistant Professor of Surgery with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Polanco has clinical expertise in several aspects of cardiac surgery, but has special interest in the management of complex aortic pathology, heart transplantation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Dr. Polanco earned his medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Afterwards he completed an integrated cardio-thoracic surgery residency at Columbia University, New York-Presbyterian. He also received funding to complete an additional Aortic Surgery Research Fellowship at Columbia University. After this, he completed a fellowship in Mechanical Circulatory Support and Heart Transplantation at the Washington University of Saint Louis Barnes-Jewish Hospital.  

Dr. Polanco’s research interests include temperature, root and arch repair strategies during aortic dissection surgery as well the use of mechanical circulatory support pre and postoperatively in the heart transplant population.
