Tom Marchant is the co-founder of luxury travel company and trip planner, Black Tomato, which delivers luxe experiences around the world via inspiring itineraries and access to the globe's up-and-coming, remote destinations. Marchant's finger on the pulse of travel trends and the world's best in hotels, restaurants, destinations and honeymoons is unique and incomparable–and he's sharing his expertise and curated lists of where to visit, stay, eat and more with BAZAAR.com. Here, his hit list for the top hotels to stay in for a staycation in New York City.

With the weather warming up and summer Fridays on the not-so-distant horizon, many of us are starting to find ourselves itching for some respite from our day-to-day. For New Yorkers in particular, there is often no better form of therapy than a staycation– especially at this time of year, when streets begin to clear out on weekends and you can have the city all to yourself. It’s an opportunity to retreat, mentally regroup and rediscover the magic that makes locals and visitors alike fall in love with this vibrant metropolis. So while hoards of city dwellers begin their annual migration to the Hamptons, consider rewarding yourself with an urban staycation instead. Trust–you will find yourself falling in love with New York City all over again.

The Baccarat

A staycation is really about re-exploring your city as though you’re a traveler, not a local. The Baccarat offers the perfect home base to do just that, boasting a central location neighboring Manhattan’s Museum Mile, Central Park and downtown’s culinary trove. For those with an eye for design, the Baccarat is unlike any other property in the city. As the first hotel opened by the legendary French crystal brand Baccarat, every single detail exudes sophisticated elegance. After a long day out on the town, the Baccarat Bar will beckon. Featuring awe-inspiring 60 ft barrel vaulted ceilings, crystal chandeliers and black and white painted wood floors, the bar enchants with royal odes to Versaille. After a long day of exploring, retire to your plush suite, or the otherworldly spa and indoor pool.

From $925 per night.

2

Crosby Street Hotel

This is a must and highlighted by superior service and, in our opinion, the best art collection of any hotel in the city. Crosby Street Hotel offers perfect proximity to the bustle of Broadway and Soho, but sits tucked away on an elegant, quiet stretch of street reminiscent of a different era. Visit the Rooftop Kitchen Garden where you’ll often find head chef Anthony Paris collecting ingredients for the day’s inspired, seasonal menu. The rooms are elegant, fresh, and spacious–something not so common in the city that never sleeps.

From $675 for two (summer promotion).

3

The Mark

Staying at The Mark is an experience to savor (it is, after all, home to the city's most luxurious penthouse) but you can experience and taste this hotel's true flavors without overnighting. The Mark Restaurant and Bar offers an elegant setting to dine and experience the hospitality that keeps this hotel at the forefront of the NYC hospitality scene. That said, in-room dining by Jean-Georges is hard to beat, and if you’re in need of a new look, this New York institution houses its very own Frederic Fekkai Hair Salon and after-hours access to Bergdorf Goodman.

For those who want to feel far from home, The Greenwich Hotel blends subtle European charm and motifs from the East to evoke a far-flung feel in the heart of NYC. You'll love the Greenwich for its decor, but especially for its dining–i.e. the superb fusion of Italian and French at Locanda Verde. The hotel’s global influences take center stage in each uniquely appointed guest room where Parisian antiques, Moroccan tilework, repurposed Japanese wood and Tibetan rugs all styled together feel straight out of a dream. The brain-child of Robert Deniro, this Tribeca hotspot will have you coming back time and time again.

The Beekman

There are few new hotels that have successfully enchanted New Yorkers in quite the cinematic fashion as The Beekman has since its opening in late 2016. The landmark building dates back to the 19th century, and once housed a library frequented by Edgar Allan Poe. Today, the hotel’s center piece is its stunning pyramidal atrium, at the bottom of which is its chic, sumptuous restaurant and bar, Fowler & Wells, that pays homage to the library theme. Restored and designed with astute attention to detail, The Beekman offers eclectic bohemian grandeur at its finest, serving as the ideal networking destination to discover the new creative energy and chic dining experiences now being offered in the once-stuffy financial district.

From $399 per night.

In the heart of the Manhattan’s storied Flatiron district, The EDITION is a constant reminder of why it's hard not to love the New York hotel ‘scene’. Though the Edition isn’t yet 3 years old, it offers the same historic feel one gets when exploring London’s legendary hotel scene. While not boutique in size, the rooms certainly have a cozy, residential feel. And, if you're up for a fun night out and a delicious meal, visit their restaurant and bar (complete with billiards and a swanky cocktail lounge), The Clocktower.

The Marlton

The Marlton Hotel’s simplicity makes it one of our favorite hotels in New York and the perfect option for a staycation in the city. The conservatory-style restaurant, Margaux, is a prime spot for enjoying Mediterranean-influenced flavors in an airy, ego-free environment. When there’s a chill in the air, take a seat on the plush velvet sofa by a roaring fire and enjoy a cocktail from their finely-curated list. The rooms may be petite, but they are full of character, and you can’t beat the location–the property is just steps from Washington Square Park.

One of our favorite Upper East Side sanctuaries, The Surrey’s trilogy of spa, bar and restaurant (best enjoyed in that order) offers the perfect break from the city. Just steps from The Met, The Surrey houses an impressive collection of modern art and photography in addition to top-notch dining. Snag a sidewalk seat outdoors or inside at Bar Boulud and people watch some of the city’s most glamorous residents. Or, if you fancy a cocktail, Bar Plaiedes is a hidden gem, and one of the sexiest and most discrete in the city. Guests will find it hard to tire of the service, style and sense of place here. Expert Tip: the guest-only private rooftop garden is a serene spot to enjoy a glass of rose set against the dramatic pre-war backdrop of uptown Manhattan.

The Standard East Village

Another East Village treasure, The Standard East Village is a personal favorite for one obvious reason– the views. All of the property’s 144 guest rooms offer spectacular, expansive and uninterrupted views of the city’s skyline, but for the ultimate staycation splurge, check out (or check in to) the Penthouse on the hotel’s 21st floor. Head here for a dusk drink, visit for a bite at brunch or book yourself in for a long weekend and experience floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall vistas from your own cozy East Village sanctuary. With its own café and an American Nouveau restaurant, Narcissa, in-house (co-owned by Michelin-starred Chef John Fraser) it’s hard to leave once you’ve arrived.
