WEEKE Primary School is now Hampshire School champions in two of England’s most dominant sports - cricket and football.

The cricket team earned a place at the Utilita Bowl by winning the Winchester and District Dynamos tournament.

All district winners, from Gosport to Fleet, came to compete to become county champions.
Weeke won both matches in the group stages thanks to some super wicket keeping by Barnaby, and many number of huge sixes from the children, the longest coming from Scott.

Weeke met Church Crookham Junior in the quarter final, who were tough opposition but thanks to five sixes by the batting pair of Harry and Billy, the team set an unattainable target of 121 runs.

In the semi-final they met St Mary’s Junior School again. Having beaten them in the group stages they expected them to raise their game and they did but five sixes off the last ten balls in Weeke’s innings by Noah and Barnaby, followed by the same two players bowling the first two overs, getting a wicket each and going for only one run between them set Weeke up perfectly to cruise into the final

They met Abbotswood in the final. Their brilliant bowling and fielding restricted Weeke to 53 runs with five wickets (averaging a score of 38). Understandably, some Weeke heads went down at the innings break as they had scored over 100 in all of their four matches building up to the final.

Alex displayed nerves of steel and bowled in the perfect areas which meant it all came down to the last ball. Abbotswood needed two runs. A good ball from Alex was struck cleanly and the batting pair got away for one run. As they were coming back for their second, Charlie fielded brilliantly and threw the ball into Scott who backed up perfectly and narrowly ran the batter out. Thanks to their amazing spirit and teamwork throughout, Weeke clinched victory becoming the Hampshire Primary School Champions for the first time in their history.
