What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Since 1987 ARISE Adelante, A Resource In Serving Equality moving forward, has been directly impacting the quality of life for residents in low-income areas of the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) that otherwise receive little to no services. These residents, primarily Mexican immigrants with mixed status, live in colonias (low-income, unincorporated areas many of which lack basic services). ARISE serves mostly women (ages 18-85) and youth (0-18) living in multigenerational families. Single mothers are typical heads of households with less than a high school education and an income of 200% below the poverty line. ARISE assists these low-income families throughout Hidalgo County by providing a wide array of educational programming and personal development training for the 5000+ residents who live in the 50+ colonias directly served by ARISE.

Summer Program - Un Verano Con ARISE

For 5-6 weeks during the summer youth volunteers from across the U.S. and Mexico provide children in the Rio Grande Valley with learning, social and engagement opportunities each week. Additionally, this is a cross-cultural opportunity for young adults to serve the communities of South Texas and learn about each other.

The Border Witness Program calls people to understand the unique struggles of the population which lives along the Texas/Mexican border - a region formed by people who came to seek a better life for themselves and their children, and whose hope continues despite poverty, economic change and social conflict. The Border Witness Program facilitates the understanding of the struggles and strengths of the border communities, analyzes the systems that perpetuate poverty and marginalization, and promotes direct participation in the issues that affect the Rio Grande area.

Population(s) Served

ARISE assists adults in learning and practicing the English language, and children in applying English in reading, writing and speaking.

Population(s) Served

Youth from across the Rio Grande Valley are invited to participate in a four-day retreat to brainstorm and plan projects to benefit their communities. Throughout the school year they lead and carry out these projects. Many of these projects focus on addressing environmental justice issues impacting their communities including drainage problems, pollution, food deserts, clean drinking waters and others.

Population(s) Served

ARISE assists immigrants through every stage of the process to become U.S. citizens.
