Mission

Our mission is to save as many lives as possible. Our goals are to help prevent 100 million deaths from cardiovascular disease and make the world safer from epidemics.

Notes from the nonprofit

Resolve to Save Lives was established in 2017 as an initiative within the global health organization Vital Strategies, with an initial $225 million in core funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gates Philanthropy Partners, which is funded with support from the Chan Zuckerberg Foundation. Following the successful incubation and rapid expansion of Resolve to Save Lives, management of the Resolve Initiative and Vital Strategies decided to spin off the Resolve Initiative into its own entity. Resolve to Save Lives incorporated as an independent not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization in 2021.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

We are a global public health initiative with one mission: save lives. We are determined to prevent millions of deaths from cardiovascular disease and epidemics, with a focus on accelerating action through speed, simplicity, and scale in low- and middle-income countries.

Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Cardiovascular Health

High blood pressure is the world’s leading cause of death. Despite availability of safe, effective and low cost treatment, only one out of seven adults with hypertension have their blood pressure controlled.
Very few organizations work in cardiovascular health, and fewer yet work across prevention and treatment. There is a tremendous amount of work to be done—with limited political attention and global health funding. Resolve to Save Lives fills this gap.
We work with partners to reduce heart attack and stroke by:
• Increasing the number of people whose pressure is under control from 14% to 50%controlled 14% to 50%
• Reducing global dietary salt intake by 30%
• Making food safer by eliminating artificial trans fat from the global food supply

Population(s) Served

Resolve to Save Lives is committed to making the world safer from epidemics.

The world is vulnerable to the next health threat because most people live in countries that are not well prepared to find, stop and prevent dangerous infectious diseases such as COVID-19.

We partner with countries to step up preparedness by:
• Scaling public health technical expertise locally;
• Strengthening capacity and performance of public health systems; and
• Advancing policy action to promote national and global epidemic preparedness.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Cardiovascular Health - The majority of deaths from cardiovascular disease are in low- and middle-income countries, so that's where we focus our attention.

OBJECTIVE 1: Improve global control of blood pressure from 14% to 50%. Only about 1 in 7 people (14%) in the world has their blood pressure under control. There are simple, proven solutions to improve that ratio for as little as $1 per person each year

OBJECTIVE 2: Reduce global dietary sodium intake by 30%. Reducing salt is proven to significantly reduce deaths from cardiovascular disease. Eating too much salt causes more than 2 million deaths each year from high blood pressure.

OBJECTIVE 3: Eliminate artificial trans fats from the global food supply. 14 years ago, just 1 country took action to cut trans fat from their food supply. Today it’s more than 25. Eliminating trans fat will save 17 million lives over the next three decades.

Prevent Epidemics - Make the world safer from epidemics with advocacy and action

TECHNICAL: We provide technical expertise to partners in health security, supporting planning and implementation with a focus on sharing best practice between countries and supporting local learning. Our efforts are targeted toward countries “Stepping Up” to making incremental and measurable progress in their ability to find, stop and prevent disease.

POLITICAL: A country needs sustained finance and ongoing political support to be prepared for the next outbreak. We work with grassroots organizations, media and governments to build political will for epidemic preparedness.

FINANCIAL: We provide catalytic grants to help countries "Step Up" and be prepared for the next epidemic. We work with global partners to increase the amount of funds available to support countries' preparedness efforts.

Resolve to Save Lives is widely trusted as a nimble partner and honest broker. We provide support as a funder and co-implementer, depending on what is needed most.

We prioritize partnerships with national and local organizations in low- and middle-income countries, and we work with global organizations to produce and promote policies that maximize health gains.
