RestoreOKC Inc

Bridging relationships of reconciliation for restorative justice.

aka WellSpring Cleaning Company   |   OKLAHOMA CITY, OK   |  www.restoreokc.org

Mission

Our Mission: Bridging relationships of reconciliation for restorative justice — we serve the physical, social, emotional, educational & economic needs of our neighbors in NEOKC.

Notes from the nonprofit

Everything we do is informed by relationships with our neighbors in Northeast Oklahoma City: We facilitate access to sustainable food, supportive community, and healthcare through our urban farm and the Market at Eastpoint. We strive to restore the foundations of flourishing built environments such as education, jobs, housing, green space and healthy food while dismantling destructive norms such as discrimination by partnering with the schools in our community, supporting the staff and teachers, getting to know families and building relationships of trust. We provide job training via three businesses in our community to support individuals in rewriting their personal stories, developing skills that allow them to pursue careers, dreams and goals that were previously unreachable. We seek to tell the whole story, believing that only when we address history, systems, and lived experiences holistically and with humility can we see true justice and healing across all divisions.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Restore Schools

Restore Schools -- in 2016, we had 4 elementary schools considered “failed” & one considered “failed at every level; With teacher turnover at 94%, our goal was simple -- retain teachers. We knew that if we could retain, then we could help train. Classroom Care Teams were 8 adults placed alongside each classroom with a simple goal of supporting them whatever their needs were. We are proud to report that 6 years later, staff retention is at 87%!

Restore Homes -- last year, over 800 volunteers gave 8100+ hours investing $400,000+ back into the community in free home repairs, handicap accessibility & affordable housing.

Population(s) Served
Families
Seniors

Restore Farms -- an arm of RestoreOKC that has employed 25 Eastside youth to work on OKC’s first Urban Farm to end their own food desert community and who helped own a community-owned & community-led grocery store last year in the middle of a pandemic!

Population(s) Served
Adolescents

Restore Jobs -- an adult employment arm, we have 3 businesses underneath Restore Jobs that provide employment for more than 80 neighbors. We also connect employees with wrap-around services and classes to alleviate barriers to long-term employment.

Those businesses are: Wellspring Cleaning Company, The Market at Eastpoint & Eastside Eatery.

Restore Foods -- in 2021, we opened The Market at Eastpoint to end the food desert in Northeast Oklahoma City. And, because we believe that healthy food options are just one building block of a healthy lifestyle we knew from the beginning that The Market at Eastpoint would serve our neighbors as far more than a grocery store. The hope was an innovative approach that could transform the entire food system for neighbors, provide employment, and offer a central location for other resources.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
