What we aim to solve
South Bronx United (SBU) aims to serve the diverse immigrant youth population in the South Bronx, a community that lags far behind the rest of the city and state with the lowest math and English test scores, a 56% high school graduation rate, a 17% college readiness rate, and the highest unemployment rate in the city. Immigrant and first generation youth face additional challenges including language barriers, interrupted education histories, immigration status, and hostile federal policies.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The SBU Academy
The SBU Academy provides a pathway from middle school to high school to college to careers for South Bronx and immigrant youth. Youth compete on travel soccer teams, attend After School Tutoring, Sophomore Skills classes, SAT Prep, or Senior College Prep. Team mentors serve as key supports for youth and regularly follow up on academic progress and social-emotional issues. Programs and services also include leadership development, immigrant legal services, and other support services. Youth spend at least 10 hours a week during the school year in program activities. Most participate in Summer Soccer Scholars, a full day program providing academic instruction, life skills, soccer training, and field trips out of the city over 5 weeks during the summer. In the last four years, 100% of participating seniors have graduated high school and 94% have matriculated to college.
Recreational Soccer Program
The Recreational Programboys and girls between the ages of 4-19. The recreational league is open to all children regardless of ability. Children play a Fall and a Spring season. The program promotes health and wellness through good nutrition and active lifestyles to fight childhood obesity. Children stay active in a safe environment. The recreational program is affiliated with East New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA).
Immigration Legal Services
SBU primarily manages immigration cases and provides information session on relevant immigrant issues to youth and families in other SBU programs. This helps youth on the path towards college, careers, and community contributions and helps families provide a better life for their children. Furthermore, South Bronx United has supported numerous youth and families through green card and DACA processes.
SBU Community Schools
After school health, education, and soccer programming at multiple elementary school sites, in conjunction with a weekend program.
Global Youth League
Provides recreational soccer league for high school youth, with access to immigration legal service screenings and referrals to other social services.
Select Soccer Program
Competitive soccer teams, including training and games, for children ages 9-12. Opportunities for academic tutoring and other activities.
SBU Academy: College Success
Provides post-secondary school and college success supports for alumni of the SBU Academy program.
