If you haven’t yet experienced the effects of using lubricants for sex, you’re truly missing out on something spectacular. Because no matter how you’re doing it, and irrespective of who you’re doing it with, lubricants will take your sexual experience to the next level.

Lubricants aren’t only for when there isn’t enough natural lubrication in the vagina; you could always use them as additional lubrication because there is no such thing as too much lubrication. Even when you’re going solo, these lubricants will come in handy (pun not intended!). And obviously, when anal sex is on the menu, you’ve got to use a generous amount of lubrication because that part of the body doesn’t produce any of its own, anyway.

Now that we’re done establishing (hopefully!) the need and purpose of lubricants, let’s proceed to the kinds of lubricants available in the market, for you to choose from:

5 kinds of lubricants for sex that you must know about

1. Silicone-based

These are thicker and longer-lasting so you won’t need as much, in terms of quantity. The myth that these are usually meant for anal sex is entirely false - you can use this one for vaginal penetration and/or masturbation, just as well.

Just be wary of any silicone allergies you may have or develop after. An excellent trick could also be to mix this one with a water-based lubricant.

2. Water-based

The most commonly used type of lubricants are water-based, and the reason for that is these come as close as possible to feeling like the one produced by the body, and are easier to clean after.

The only caveat is that when you’re using it, keep the bottle as close to your hand as possible because these lubricants evaporate faster than the other kinds.

3. Oil-based

While these still exist somewhere in the market, oil-based lubricants have lost most of their appeal ever since people decided to be firm about using condoms. The reason is that the oil in these lubricants isn’t compatible with the latex used in condoms - the oil tends to tear the condom, making it unsafe for use.

4. Hybrid

Remember how we told you about mixing silicone-based lubricants with water-based ones? Hybrid lubricants have already done that - they’re manufactured with the perfect mix of both and are fast gaining popularity for their versatility, long-lasting qualities and ease of use.

5. Natural

Just like every other kind of product, sexual products too have seen a surge in all things ‘natural’. This basically means lubricants that are predominantly, if not entirely, made of natural products such as coconut oil, yam, etc.. The verdict on these is still out but if you’re the kind who prefers vegan and paraben-free lubricants, these might be your go-to.
