I really enjoyed this, much more than I originally thought I would. I only read it because BotM lets you get one of the finalists for year's best for free, and I'd either read or was not interested in the others, so I grabbed this one.
What this book most reminded me of is the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? - but I don't want to set incorrect expectations, it is quite different and much less fantastical. This book does something similar to that ...more

In some respects, I completely see why this has stood the test of time and is now regarded as a classic of the genre. That being said, I feel this is a strong example of "X walked so Y could run" - by which I mean this book deserves credit for being among the first to explore some these themes, ideas, narrative tropes, character archetypes, and do so with a more modern sensibility, but authors like Robin Hobb and Patrick Rothfuss have taken the g
