Carol She's So Novel ꧁꧂ by Teresa Chris.

Georgette Heyer's Regency England by Teresa Chris

I've given up hope of acquiring a copy of my own, so I interloaned it from our National Library system & I'm intending to start my read tomorrow. I'm allowed to borrow it for a (very generous) month.

If anyone else can get a copy, feel free to join in.

Sorry for the lack of notice, but I have been following with concern NZ's National Library culling of some of their collection.

https://www.newsroom.co.nz/sticking-i...

Lesley & other NZ librarians will know more about this than I do.

I just would have kicked myself if this book had disappeared before I had the chance to read it!

It is by the time it is converted into NZ dollars. US$25 = $37.18 + freight.

& so far, to be honest would not be worth it. Barbosa's drawings are lovely but b&w & I'm only up to page 48 & have caught three errors.

Carol She's So Novel ꧁꧂ Critterbee❇ wrote: "Oh, what are the errors? Are they typos or content?"

So far both.
Pg 14 Fetersham instead of Petersham
Pg 31 Stacy as a character in Friday's child.
Pg 42 Mrs Dawtry instead of Mrs Dauntry.

I'm not looking hard, but this makes you wonder what else is wrong.

Cool! I'll warn you that the lady on the cover looks a most saucy minx - not a GH heroine at all! Still love it though.

Carol She's So Novel ꧁꧂ I'm at close to half way & it is disappointing so far, although the maps that Barbosa has created are helpful for pin pointing locations. A lot of GH's books take place in a very small part of London. No wonder so many of the men walked.

Also only suitable for readers who have already read all of GH's Regency novels as there are a lot of spoilers.

I have Walking Jane Austen’s London which covers the same territory. I mapped it out before my last trip to England hoping to go to London for a day but weather and jet lag did not cooperate.

Teresa | 2075 comments I didn't know this read was going on. Didn't get any notification about it. I have the book but unfortunately won't get the time to read it as I've just landed some NetGalley reads.
I can't understand how I only get some notifications and not others. Not the first time it's happened.

Hi

Sorry Teresa this was an impulse read for me as I was concerned the National Library's copy could be one that was going to disappear offshore (see message #1)

Notifications on Goodreads have been erratic for a while for many people. Goodreads performs very poorly as a social media site! Funnily enough, I get every other bug going on Goodreads but haven't had this one! All I can suggest is looking at groups in this view https://www.goodreads.com/topic?ref=n... when you first come online to see if there are any new posts.

I've neglected this book for a couple of days, but I should get back to it later today.

Teresa | 2075 comments Wasn't blaming you Carol for the non notification! I've had numerous issues with GR since I joined. I was just sorry I'd missed it. I bought the book originally because it was Heyer and I have to have everything Heyer :) but I've only skimmed it. Was a bit disappointed with it too.

So far, other than Barbosa's illustrations I've been very disappointed in this book. But most of the reviews I had read had this book as 'meh' so I'm not surprised by this.

Teresa | 2075 comments Me either Carol but as I said we want it cos it's Heyer:)

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments My borrowed copy has not arrived yet, I am hoping it will be at the library today!

Carol She's So Novel ꧁꧂ I'm just going to have to pause my read until I have finished The Foundling. Just read a mild spoiler for a plot point that I had actually forgotten.

I am very close to finishing The Foundling though!

Teresa | 2075 comments I haven't even started it yet!!!!

Carol She's So Novel ꧁꧂ I'm enjoying the walking guides & Barbosa's maps, but there is a lot of filler where Cris describes events from the books.

I wouldn't recommend to anyone who hasn't read all of GH's Regencies. I certainly wouldn't recommend going to a lot of expense to get hold of this one.

message 19: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 2075 comments I would agree with you about the cost Carol.

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments Well, my ILL arrived in, and the Lending Library pulled and sent Kloester's Georgette Heyer's Regency World instead, haha! The request was correct, with the right ISBN and all, and they just sent the wrong book

message 21: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 2075 comments That is so annoying Critterbee!!! I'd be spitting tacks.

message 22: by Critterbee❇ (new)

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments It is annoying, but the lending library is in the middle of some severe winter weather and closed right after they sent it, so maybe they were rattled by the worsening weather.
They will not be able to send out the correct book until Monday at the least, so hopefully it should arrive not too long afterwards

I wouldn't be in too much of a rush - this book was incredibly disappointing. It was so bad that I only had about two pages to go last night but I couldn't make myself finish them. I skimmed them this morning.

I think this is the book I wanted to read Barbosa: The Man Who Drew Flashman but it is a limited edition & the prices start at US$142 on ABE books. :/

Carol She's So Novel ꧁꧂ & an example of Barbosa's artwork

All the artwork, other than the cover, is b/w.

Julia (juliavd) | 66 comments Would you say the maps are useful for if we want to do a Heyer pilgrimage? I'm going to England in the fall ... would love to visit some of the places described in her books.

Hi Julia

I think it would be as long as you have good eyes or print them in a larger size. Do you have a copy of the book?

I don't have a copy, but was thinking I'd search around for one if it'd be worth it.
