From beginning to end, Breaking Ground: My Life in Medicine by Dr. Louis W. Sullivan with David Chanoff is a compelling and poignant memoir. I will be honest, I knew absolutely nothing about Dr. Sullivan prior to reading this book but it is so well written I feel like I know him intimately. Dr. Sullivan grew up in rural south Georgia, attended Morehouse College and then medical school becoming a hematologist. He later went on to help found the Morehouse School of Medicine and served under President George H. Bush as his secretary of Health and Human Services. Along the way, Dr. Sullivan’s has striven to help provide improved health care and increased access to medical careers for the underprivileged (the poor and people of color) is the primary driver in his life. Dr. Sullivan does an excellent of job of leaving the reader inspired to do more for others and their communities and to continue to challenge oneself in life in whatever endeavors one pursues. This may not have been Dr. Sullivan’s objective but it is certainly something I took from his amazing and fortuitous life. I certainly encourage everyone to take the time to read this book and it certainly should be on the recommended reading list for students.
