3.5 stars. Starts at a 4, ends around 3. The strongest parts are the social horror of the buildup, a thing I love and wish we saw more of. The discomfort of the violation of social rules, or the inability to violate social rules, is such a great way to build tension and hint at some unknown.

As it gets closer to the climax it becomes more cosmic and more chaotic. Sometimes that kind of chaos is great, but sometimes it just feels like less than the sum of its parts.

But the eerieness of that first half was so effective. I felt more creeped out by this book than made sense.
