really liked it

this book was not AT ALL what i expected.

from a writing standpoint, this is easily 5 stars. but overall, the story left something to be desired. i also didn’t find this to be as devastating as most people say it is. it’s objectively a sad story, but to me it was more disturbing than anything else.

no one who recommends this book ever says what it’s actually about (also i rarely read synopses), so i had no idea that this is speculative fiction and not literary fiction. so to say that i was shocked when i got to some of the more sci-fi elements would be an understatement loll

Erica You should watch the movie! Its one of few adaptations that did the book justice. The soundtrack and performances are perfect.

message 2: by Kit (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kit this was one that i actually really liked the movie better than the book, i was crushed by the movie but when i read the book i felt similar to how you said that it's just objectively sad.

Rebecca I was weeeeeping for the last twenty pages of this book 😭 my favorite book of all time. I love how it teeters in this tentative place of breadcrumbing a disturbing alternate universe, but by the time you put the pieces together, you realize the actual story is about these close friends in this horrific experience trying to process what their lives are and their relationships to each other. And I love Ishiguro’s use of simplistic, subtle, and heartbreaking slow reveals of information through dialogue. But I totally understand your perspective!

Alexis Yiyi This was the bleakest take on humanity I’ve read in a long time LOL

অনিন্দিতা Be I watched the film first and then read the book to its soundtrack. Absolutely devastating.

shouty-ghost I read this, I wanna say when I was 14? I was young. Anyway.. I WAS NOT READY. but even years later I am still thinking of this story, it’s one of the first books that I really ‘took with me’ so to speak. As you say, the writing is phenomenal. I wonder if I would think different re-reading it now as an adult. I won’t ever forget these characters, they are so engrained in my mind. I would 100% recommend the film if you haven’t watched it already.
