A second-tier Higashino for me, which is a first-tier from most other crime novelists. Has a lot of pre-work to do, and its biggest weakness is how it insists on focusing immediately on certain characters and connections which are so tenuous they feel almost ridiculous but of course turn out to be the center of the story. By the end I actually found the whole thing quite interesting but it was like we had to take the most roundabout route to get there. I think another structure could have served the plot better.
