Frankly a bit of a letdown! The premise was intriguing and for an acclaimed writer, I was expecting far more. It was a slog and tbh, pretty dull. It’s sort of like Makkai couldn’t decide what she wanted this to be (a thriller? Literary fiction with a focus on character development? Commentary on social issues?) and so she unfortunately did not commit in any direction - the end result is a shallow, poorly developed novel that could’ve used an editor.
