"Why I'm No Longer Talking to Black People about Race."

Consider that statement if you want to read this book. Avoid the mental gymnastics of postmodernism. Ask yourself, "does this statement show love and respect to other humans?"

If you answered no, then you are not a moron. Stay that way. Treat people as individuals, not as stereotypes.

Laura Lol. You don't think people consiythe titles of books before reading them? Also people generally read a book before reviewing it. Had you read the book you would have seen your assumptions here are wrong.

Laura *consider the titles

Dots ...says the white man who doesn't face negative stereotypes in his daily life and has benefitted from a system, culture, and history that coddles and normally promotes his world view. "I'm colorblind, I don't see race", he says proudly, puffing out his chest slightly.

Here's a question. Have you ever talked to a black person about race? Like had an in-depth discussion that lasted hours and hours?

If you answered no, you should probably read the book.
Your hypothetical question carries no weight in your effort to pretend like it's some mind boggling statement where reversing the title of this book causes some to gasp, have an epiphany, and rethink their position.
Sorry this book makes you feel attacked on a personal level.

Bella RIP!!!! This is why we need books like this as part of school curriculum so people can learn and grow before adulthood.

message 10: by Jade (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jade Consider this review and ask yourself "Has this person even read the book or is he responding with faux-indignation at having to consider the prospect of racism and white privilege because it makes him uncomfortable?" Then ask yourself if you want to jump in to that sinking boat with him...

Colin You obviously didn't read it then.

Anwen Hayward You... you didn't read the book, did you.

Michael Is it really awkward that the is the sort of white guy the author was talking about?

TJ Anderson You just proved the point. You are exactly why she wrote this book. And why this perspective will become more of the norm. Let me guess. You also don’t see colour.

Danny Truscott Ian's the moron here who's not read the book. Reni explains the title right at the start, it's a little OTT and clickbait-y, especially given that she states it's completely contrary to what she's actually done since the release of her blog post, but it's there to show her frustrations of dealing with white people. It's not hateful or disrespectful, you'd find this if you actually started reading the book.

Victoria Payne 🤦🏻‍♀️ This is exactly who the facepalm emoji was created for 😬 read the book idiot. It’s the facts, history and truths you clearly don’t want to hear but really need to... should be compulsory reading and history lesson for every white man woman and child

message 28: by dp (new)

dp Ian drank the “All Lives Matter” kool-aid and listened to a few too many Jordan Peterson lectures “debunking” white privilege & uplifting the “primacy of the individual” before writing this review 🤦🏽‍♂️

Sheri You didn’t read the book, did you? You are not not a moron.

Krissy Augustine-Cox Did you even read the book? She even says in the book about not judging a book by it’s cover....

Alexandra P Gosh I wish I could like comments on goodreads because there’re some brilliant ones here that brought back my faith in humanity. Ian you got it all wrong - you’re the moron. Sad privileged white moron.

message 38: by Book (new)

Book Junkie Look at all the hatred directed toward Ian because of his one comment.

Dots replied "...says the white man who doesn't face negative stereotypes in his daily life and has benefitted from a system, culture, and history that coddles and normally promotes his world view. "I'm colorblind, I don't see race", he says proudly, puffing out his chest slightly."

White people don't face negative stereotypes? Really? You all have already deemed him a racist because of his comment, yet you know nothing else about him and nothing he said was racist or hateful. White are constantly deemed:

racists
oppressive
micro aggressors
selfish
descendants of slave owners (forget the fact that the majority of whites never had ancestors who owned slave, or that blacks participated in the slave trade, there were black salve owners, and the African tribes enslaved one another long before colonialism.
To have an easy and privileged life, even if the opposite is true.
To be hate mongers
Cultural appropriators (whites aren’t allowed to have a culture, much less show that they like or respect other cultures)
Thieves (especially when it comes to the westward expansion of the U.S. But whenever a white person gets something, there is always someone else accusing them of stealing it.)

But you’re right. White never face negative stereotypes. Please, educate us some more on your extensive knowledge of white people.

message 39: by dp (new)

dp ^ Here we go. This was inevitably going to happen. Damn! We can’t ever catch a break. Stop with the white fragility and read the damn book

message 40: by Lisa (new) - rated it 1 star

Lisa Staygreen What? How rude and disrespectful! This is one angry and ignorant book that can only be given credit if aimed at white colonists up until the 60s. I’m sorry you feel everyone is always hating on you. Stop being a victim and move on.

Brandon consider rating books you actually read. you sound incapable of even a jumping jack

message 42: by Emma (new) - rated it 4 stars

Emma This is moronic. The title is purposefully 'controversial'. If you read the book, you would understand that first, Eddo-Lodge featured the title in a blog post where she just said she was tired of 'mental acrobatics' with rigid white people. Secondly, you would know that actually she does not stereotype. She explains that there is no hostility behind her title because she knows that not all white people are ignorant or supremacist. Thirdly, are you really being offended on the basis of your race? Really? Your whiteness is so fragile you can't face somebody else's truth?

Read the goddam book before being unnecessarily offended and angry. If you don't like the book, then go ahead with negative comments backed by reason and your logic. But this comment is illogical, and frankly aids the message of Eddo-Lodge. So really, bravo for cementing that.

Brandon I'm glad the mere title of the book invokes reactions that prove the author's point. book junkie and lisa - the book addresses your very predictable points. either read it or refrain from complaining. lisa, you act as though Black people should have no current gripes and simply have to forget the past. yet... you label a book ignorant and angry *all because of the title*. lol, what's offensive about the title? she even clarifies in the beginning, 'not all white people.' Black people face far harsher conditions than what you - and book junkie - are upset about. oh, btw, the title implies the author is moving beyond talking to white people, like you suggest. if she's not talking *to* you, why exactly are you complaining? get over it, and get out of your bubble. you don't realize the fools you're making of yourselves.

Brandon ha, if we're judging books by titles, look at the ones on your shelves, lisa and book junkie. just wow

message 45: by Suze (new) - rated it 4 stars

Suze I would just suggest reading it before posting your reactionary review and imagining that you’re being discriminated against. Did it not occur to you that the book actually *is* talking to white people about race and that perhaps the title might mean something? You hardly have to read any of the book to find that out.
It’s unfair to give a book you haven’t read one star just because you don’t like its title.

Kaylie Bee Just read the book!

Book Junkie Brandon wrote: "ha, if we're judging books by titles, look at the ones on your shelves, lisa and book junkie. just wow"

Look at the titles of the books in your own reading list before you start complaining about the titles in another's reading list. *eye roll* FYI, books are always judged by their titles.

Glenn Elliott Have you actually read the book Ian? It’s hard to imagine that if you had read it you would still come out with that view. The first page of the book explains straight away that the author doesn’t mean “all whites people” she means a specific group of white people who don’t believe race is an issue or who come to the discussion thinking both sides have the same power. If you look past your offense at the title and read it which only takes a couple of days you could be really enlightened, as I was.

message 49: by tijana (new)

tijana Imagine missing the whole point of the damn book... LOL get the hell out. And close the door on your way while you're at it.

Audible Reader I’m so glad some of your peers really told you what’s what!!

You honestly sound like a bitter white privileged man, tut tut.
