⚠️ Warning - long rant ahead ⚠️
TL;DR version - this didn’t work for me at all, but everyone else seems to love it 🤷🏼♀️
Mark this down as yet another super hyped book that didn’t work for me. I’ve seen nothing but glowing reviews for this, but I really didn’t like it. It was painfully slow and far too long, it easily could have been trimmed back 100+ pages without losing anything important. There are also side plots that added very little to the story. This is classified as a Literary Thriller but it is not at all thrilling. I would really say its more part Literary slow burn mystery and part coming of age story.
I found the MC Bodie frustrating - she’s whiny, annoying and self absorbed in that everything has to relate back to her. So much time is spent by Bodie taking the story of her friends murder and trying to focus it on herself and her issues at the school. While also being sure to tell everyone that the podcast about the murder totally wasn’t her idea - literally this is the first thing she says to multiple people who she hasn’t talked to in years. Priorities. 🙄
I often find that Literary Fiction books focus on social issues, but this one felt like it was trying to hit upon far too many. Gender norms, racism, me too era, covid, the justice system, misogyny, cancel culture, sexual assault, predatory behavior and more, yes more! I think this would have been more effective if the author had focused on a few of these issues and really dug in and analyzed and challenged what could be done about them, or how the full impact of each is felt. Instead it was done in a very heavy handed way and issues were brought up and then quickly discarded.
There were so many characters to keep track of between the present timeline and her past time at the school and I really struggled to remember who was who. I did this on audio which probably helped contribute to this confusion, but eventually I gave up on trying to keep all the minor players straight. Randomly the MC would just begin to start listing out a variety of cases with women as the victim (was it the one about the women who was found in the dumpster, or no was it the one about… etc) which for me didn’t have the impact I think she was going for, and instead I ended up skipping past these sections after the first two instances.
When part two begins I thought it might finally pick up, but then the way its done we have to get all the information second hand which does not make for exciting reading. Things took a wildly unbelievable turn and felt very Scooby Doo in how things were found out. I really did not like how it ended, it annoyed me and I felt like I walked away from this wondering what point the author was trying to make. I gave it 2⭐️ bc I did finish it, but I also feel like I stuck it out only bc I’d already invested so much time in the far too long book.

This was probably one of the most boring books I've read so I completely agree.

I’m like, 6% in and already the “social issues” aspect has annoyed me for the very same reason (heavy handed; seems so forced!!) so I came to find a not stellar review to see if this continues. Your review sold me on abandoning this 😅
Thank you for your review. I don’t recall ever feeling so angry over time wasted reading a book as I have this book. Agree should have been at most 100 pages.
I also gave it two stars and wanted to just say, "meh," but you expressed EXACTLY how I felt about this book!! Good review!
Agree. Editor asleep at the switch. Far too long, far too little "thrill." The only person I cared about was Omar.
Great review that expresses how I felt too. So long, so many characters, self centered narrator and not a book I would recommend to anyone.
I’m with you! My book club meets next week to discuss this, and my question for them is: What was the point of this book? I kept hoping it would improve, but it just rambled on and on. Bodie’s spent a lot of time saying what she didn’t want to do, yet those are the things she did. There were other plot lines that had little to do with the story. And I finished the book (finally!) feeling an intense case of annoyance.
Everything you said was spot on. It was too long. I didn’t like Bodie at all. The end was unsatisfying and there was nothing “thrilling” about this story at all. I started to read it and it was moving so slow that I switch to the audio version when it became available through the library. I thought for sure that would make a difference. Nope. Way too narration from Bodie. I stuck it out because I felt I had invested too much time to cut and run, but it wasn’t worth it.
I agree with everyone here. I finished it hoping it would get better, have a resolution....I was just mad that I wasted my time. I waited FOREVER to get this from my library and it was all a waste.
I so agree, and gave it a half hearted 3. For me it was the disappointing ending. All that lead up for…nothing! And she kept referencing “you” which I kept assuming was Brock, but then it wasn’t and that pronoun was never addressed. Way too much rumination about very little!!
I read a lot of books and it is extremely rare that I don’t finish one once I’ve started it. I finished this book but only because I didn’t read the second half of part one. When I picked up with part two and read until the end, I don’t feel like I missed anything that mattered. So definitely too long and even what I read was not enjoyable. Why is this book’s rating so high???
I hated this book. I had to reread pages over cause I would get so distracted. I agree with you wholeheartedly. Way way too many characters. And I read it so that’s not cause it was on audio. Hated the ending. Really really disliked it all and wanted to quit reading but I never do that no matter how much I’m not into a book!
Thank you for putting this into words. Bodie might be my least favorite protagonist in a book that I’ve read in all of 2023. She was intolerable! And the leaps she made in her logic before deciding that people were guilty were WILD to me. I was like, “the twist better be that she’s completely wrong and psychotic!”
Yes to everything you wrote and it’s a shame because I love me some Makkai. This was not it - and Bodie was annoying AF.
About to mark this one DNF. It’s horrible. I can’t stand Bodie, what a crybaby. I graduated only 13 years ago and I can’t remember anything in great detail from my high school years. It’s crazy how she can recount everything in picture perfect detail. Barf!!! Grow up and get over your high school years girl.
I totally agree with you. I hated the ending and realized that I spent a lot of time reading a book that kind of went no where.
I also listened rather than read and felt the same as you did. And also was disappointed in the ending. I don't read the reviews much as most want to tell the story. I am looking for just what you did. Thank you.
This really mirrored my review of the book as well. I felt like it was ultimately a tremendous waste of my reading time.
Exactly. After reading this review I’m glad I stopped at page 100!!! One of the great benefits of reading for enjoyment, is that you can put down books like this and never look back.
It's refreshing to read your review, as I thought I was the only one. As I was writing mine, I thought it was just me!
I feel the same way about this book. You summed up my thoughts and opinions perfectly. We would have had good book club moments lol.
Agree. I tried to like it but just could not get through it. I thought it was just me not liking the subject.
I pushed through 40% hoping for a turning point, but I'm 100% in agreement with you and everyone else here
Wow— as someone who works with high school kids and has watched schools undergo investigations, I loved this book. Appreciated your post as it sort of solidified my 5 star review. I mean that sincerely. Clearly lots of folks agree with you! My best—
I totally agree with your review. Everything you said I felt. I kept going on reading it because I thought it was going to get better. It did not get any better. I’m very disappointed.
It was tough for me to reconcile the cohesiveness and soundness of The Great Believers compared to this novel. I was anticipating equal greatness. Scooby-Doo is an (and very funny) accurate description!
💯 I listened in audio and ended up finishing it at 2x speed just to get through it. And the ending was like, okay??? Ugh. Hate when something is so hyped and then falls so short.
