It did seem a little odd that Hurricane Katrina was included as an event, although if you look at this as a combination memoir and epidemiological narrative, I suppose it makes some sense, since the author was there as a part of his job. If you think you'll like this, you probably will, although the title is a little misleading -- it doesn't really discuss the *next* pandemic (which would be impossible, although potential candidates could be examined), but as is typical in these sorts of books, discusses what happened in previous epidemics. ...more

This one held its own against some of my favorites and I liked how this one followed cholera as an example with which to compare other and potential outbreaks. I also liked the emphasis on human failures in our fight against the microbes, and the discussions about the potential emergence of fungal infections to wreak havoc. 4.5 stars...more
