I... liked it? Took me a while to get into it, mostly because I thought the main guy and his friends were evil and I didn't overly like the female main character lol. But I got more invested in the relationship the longer I read.
I'm not entirely sure the smut scenes actually worked for me, which is a shame, considering they're a big selling point of this novel. And I do admit that I miss Ali Hazelwood's humor. It's just so great and makes her books really stand out for me. But that wasn't present as much in this one, so that's a shame.
I'm glad Ali got to try something new, but I can't say I was a huge fan....more

But I also really liked Laurence; loved seeing him become less uptight and more feral about his dragon. YES. Their relationship was the highlight of this book.
But aside from that, I also quite liked the plot and the side characters. I know it's literally in the summary of the book but I did NOT expect this to take place during the Napoleonic wars?? Really interesting, honestly.
This book also made me cry REAL tears, which hasn't happened in a while, so that should tell you how emotionally invested I was in this!
If you want a classic and super cool dragon book, I really recommend this!...more

I wanted to see what the hype was about. And while this certainly had its moments, I was a bit underwhelmed. The first half was good, the second half I wanted to see what the hype was about. And while this certainly had its moments, I was a bit underwhelmed. The first half was good, the second half felt like filler. There were a lot of sex scenes that, to me, felt like rinse & repeat.
But I was in the mood for something simple to read while the sun was shining, and this definitely delivered.
Just be aware that it's definitely a product of its time. Or maybe it's just really straight, haha. Because if I have to read "his male scent/his unique maleness" one more time... ...more

I also adored Anita! I love how she got shit done, and didn't take any of Nuni's bullshit. And she was pretty ballsy too! Also, the competitiveness between these two had me in stitches. The fact that they were both so into it was so funny.
Conclusion: these two competitive, hard working, sporty people are perfect for each other and I had a blast reading about their relationship developing from rivals to (the cutest) lovers, haha. ...more

I was so fully immersed in this book and the world that I had to take a moment (after finishing it) to realize where I am and who I was.
This series was a wild ride. And so, so beautifully crafted. Where things didn't quite make sense to me in book 2, they fully did in this one. Everything came together, leaving me with a feeling of "Yes, actually, that makes so much sense now that I know." Which is always nice. Knowing you could've pieced it together, if only you had such an amazing brain as N.K. Jemisin.
The originality. The scope. The inclusive world-building. It was incredible. The only reason why this book isn't five stars is because I struggled with the first half; it was a bit slow for me, but that might just be because I was in the mood for something fast-paced. Nevertheless, just like the other two books, this book hooked me. And it hasn't quite let go yet. ...more

Darker and angstier than I thought it would be, and intriguing enough that I wanted to keep reading. But I didn't have the best time with it? It was just so bleak. I also couldn't completely get on board with Ethan's feelings; they felt too fast and intense for what happened on page.
The dialogue also heavily reminded me of All For The Game, except it didn't fit as neatly. Don't get me wrong, some sentences were stunning, but they didn't seem to suit the story and the characters? I dunno, it was a weird and niggling feeling.

Oof, what a ride! We got so much character growth in this book. From both main characters. And we got a lot of angst too.
I have to admit I was quite Oof, what a ride! We got so much character growth in this book. From both main characters. And we got a lot of angst too.
I have to admit I was quite frustrated with the part before the character growth. It wasn't fun angst; it was frustrating but necessary conflict between two people who went through hell and back.
I think my frustration stemmed from my expectation for this book, and how it differed from what it actually was. This book is more serious than any of Lily's other books. And I hadn't expected that. I hadn't expected Lily to delve deeper into such real and human problems that many people no doubt experience: the feeling of not deserving love, of not being enough, of being scared for things to change.
Once I got the memo, though, I admired Lily for how she handled these topics. I think the lessons Ash and Lonan learn are good ones.
So, yes, I think Lily did a fantastic job wrapping this series up. I was truly invested in the romance; even though this was book 3, I was still on the edge of my seat. I was also constantly wondering how things would be resolved, and Lily's answer was always a surprise! And her writing style once again sucked me right in. Even the slower parts were never a chore to read.
In the end, I'm really glad I read this series! ...more
