Even during the more surreal moments, it felt true. Like when you're trapped in a bad dream that you can't wake up from.
That's what mental illness can feel like, and to have the main characters real life and dream life became so blurred was both chilling and intriguing.
I will admit that I did like the “real life” scenes the most, but I was still very impressed by how imaginative the narrative became throughout the story.

I thought the premise of evil actions creating literal monsters was very interesting, and I think that the story was very creative.
For whatever reason though I had trouble finishing this book, I don't know why, I was just kind of bored especially once the “action” started. This may have been because while the plot was very creative, the good guys and bad guys seemed a bit one dimensional.
I didn't real feel a connection between the protagonists. The villains were almost cartoony in their violence. I probably won;t be continuing with this series, but will still check out other works from this author, perhaps her adult books will be better suited for me.

Wow, I'm breathless. I can't remember the last time I devoured a book with such relish. It was as if the author reached into my brain, picked out everything I love in a book and put it all together in one story, just for me! It's insane, not even does it have all the elements that I love in a book, but it also has the right amount of each. And to think this sat so long on my tbr list because the cover didn't grab me!

Despite the title awkwardly sounding like a very erotic romance book, I quite enjoyed this novel. The story centers around Nalia, a powerful Jinni trapped in servitude to a cruel and mysterious master. When she finally gets a chance at freedom its only through a tense alliance with an enemy.
I loved the story, I was on the edge of my seat for much of it. The relationships were my favourite part. They were so well done, the relationship between Nalia and her master felt very realistically complicated. The sequel looks good too but for some reason I'm not in a rush to read it. Probably just due to my huge tbr pile.

I really enjoyed this. It's not very common (atleast not in the YA books I've been reading lately) for a story (a fantasy story no less) to focus so much on female friendship.
The relationship between Safiya and Iseult read so authentically that I couldn't help but root for them fiercely throughout the whole story. The side characters and bad guys were also well done, and seemingly everyone having their backstory “shrouded in mystery” was pretty fun too. Sometimes being in the dark can get frustrating, but this story paced the breadcrumbs very well and I can't wait to read the next book to find out what happens to everyone!

I suppose that this is a result of trying to be relatable to a large group of people, perhaps I simply didn't “get it” but either way it did bring my rating down a bit for this. For the most part though this was an entertaining read, I just wished that the quality was more consistent. 3.5/5

I imagine that there are very few 500+ paged books that could keep a young mind so enthralled. However this is not marketed as a middle grade book, it is marketed as a Young Adult book and as such I thought it was much too kiddy.
While the banter may have been cute and even witty for a twelve year old, for the protagonists later teen years it came across as rather juvenile. I also found that the book was much bigger than it needed to be, but perhaps that is also simply because I found the story somewhat predictable and therefore the dragging out of certain elements to be rather tedious.
Overall while not my cup of tea, I think this is a great book for younger children.

As expected I loved this anthology of works from George R.R Martin. It was so cute how he included a couple stories from when he was young, while they were a tiny bit painful to get through it was amazing to see how far he has come with his writing.
As someone who discovered him from his Song of Ice and Fire series it was interesting to find out that he is actually famous in a wide range of genres. Horror, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, he masters them all. I don't think that there is a single story throughout this anthology that I didn't like. I also really appreciated his thoughts on the stories, it was a nice lead in. I can't wait to read volume two.5/5

The reviews for this book were correct in that this is so far beneath the Divergent trilogy, so as to seem written by a completely different author. Right from the get go, this book was slow as molasses, filled with yawn inducing characters and a lackluster, if non-existent plot. Well I mean sure there is a plot...kinda....in the last 15%.
I wanted so bad for everyone to be wrong about this book but nope, they were right. This book is an uninspired snooze-fest. Wake me up at the next attempt at an interesting story by this author, and let's all hope she's not a one hit wonder.

Once again Ms. Khanani delivers a top notch fantasy. I am so happy that this sequel is a full length novel, as I wanted to spend as much time as possible in this amazing world. I was on the edge of my seat for the whole novel, this author has some of the best pacing that I have ever read. No boring bits in this.
I loved all of the characters in this book, even the villains. The main character is so relatable (although honestly she is probably more moral than me). Ms. Khanani's books always lift my mood so much, it's nice to have found a new auto-buy author.
If you love young adult fantasy this book is for you, it is also free from romance/insta-love/love triangles for those who detest that. The main character is intelligent without being unrealistically perfect, she has flaws without being annoying, and the character depth in this story will make you wishing that you could be best friends with Hitomi. I am in love. [image]

Soon however this turned into one of the most disappointing books I have ever readVery interesting premise, that had me entranced for the first half. Soon however this turned into one of the most disappointing books I have ever read. Talk about bait and switch. I loved the originality of this story but it felt “off ” a lot of the time. Nothing really meshed together, the writing... I couldn't tell if my struggle to enjoy this was a cause of the author trying too hard or not trying hard enough.
The characters were also supposed to be in their late teens, yet they had the mentality and dialogue of young children. This was especially at odds with some of the more brutal scenes in the book. However even such scenes were not all that squeamish due to the over-the-top nature of much of the action.
It's like how I am usually pretty wimpy when it comes to gory movies, but I have no problem watching most Quentin Tarantino movies because its just like watching ketchup spout from a bottle. There are many other issues I had with the story, the insta-love, the romanticizing of abusive relationships, the pointless stubbornness of the main character for no point other than to extend the number of pages.
It felt as though the author was just trying to fill a word count at times. Rather than rant anymore however I will simply let the book speak for itself, in the form of multiple quotes below the spoiler tag. Note that there are some spoilers in the quotes.
(view spoiler)[ Detailed Descriptions: “His hair is jet-black silk, the locks long enough to hang over his brow, the perfect frame for features that have been chiseled by a master. His eyebrows are just as black and a perfect thickness. His eyes, those golden eyes with the crystalline flecks, are pure male aggression, intense...perfect. His perfect blade of a nose leads to a perfect shadow of stubble. His top lip is the same plumpness as his bottom lip, the two a perfect pair. His skin is a perfect bronze, as if its been painted on by perfect brushstrokes. Perfect. Yes. That's what he is. Perfection made flesh.”
Romance: “We burn together - and he only wants me to burn hotter.”
“ I feel you,” he gasps out. “The heat of you...it's so good.”
“A note from Killian. Stick around, and I'll allow you to punish me. Leave and I'll do the punishing.” (This amazing love interest also drugs her, manipulates her and constantly puts himself before her. He also treats all the girls he has slept with like garbage once the deed it done.) OMG and the amount of times Killian is described as smelling of “Peat smoke and heather” is too damn high!
Threats/Insults “I am a force to be reckoned with, and today is the day of your reckoning.”
“ Oh thank goodness. I would rather smell like fart for all time than be in your debt for a single minute.” I snort.
“Her?” Sloan waves a hand, as if she doesn't care. “Whatevs. You two get married and have a million babies.”
“When we reach the dead end, I laugh without humor. Oh, irony, you nasty whore. You've struck again.”
“Wow,” Bow says, looking me over after I've changed. “ A make-out session would not be out of pity today.”
Action Scenes“ Punch, punch, duck. Punch, punch – wow! He uses every part of this body to inflict maximum damage. He is a lethal weapon.” (hide spoiler)]
Some parts are even worse than the above listed, but I have to stop somewhere. Don't even get me started on Ten's “poems”

I just much prefer the pace of the newer series, this one seemed to drag much more. Perhaps because there is a lot more political intrigue.
It did pick up its pace by the 70% mark, and I loved that action packed ending. I just wish that it had been able to keep me so engaged throughout. To be honest I don't actually remember a ton from this novel, I read it over a long period of time and poof its gone.
Sorry for this non-review.
In essence;
1. I enjoyed this novel once all the pieces started to fit together.
2. The character relationships were just as complex and interesting as always.
3. The plot dragged a bit too much for me.
4. But I still love this series.
5. I think I would just be better off not reading other books by the author at the same time, as perhaps it causes me to make unfair comparisons.
Overall, decent offering and I look forward to the next one.

I am always on the hunt for the mythical gem of a free book. Unfortunately this book did not live up to my hopes. The story took me a while to finish due to lots of slow spots, and it was a real struggle not to skim most of this book. My main issue was the characters, to me they felt unreal and more importantly unrealistic. This made it hard for me to connect to anyone and therefore I didn't really care what happened to the characters.
I do think that the plot had potential, and it could have been executed more successfully if the plot had not been so choppy. I felt like this book was trying to do too many things at once and therefore wasn't able to focus properly on any one idea.
I don't think that this book is terrible but I also would not recommend this. I wouldn't be opposed to reading more from this author, but I think I will be skipping the rest of this series.
Note: This book is often on sale for free, so if you are interested in this wait for a sale.
I haven't personally read this but I know that this series is very popular, and really how can you argue with FREE....I just like saying free......more

While it had many mixed reviews I was still optimistic when I ventured forth into this doorstop of a book. Indeed it started off strong and was very interesting, but it sadly quickly lost its steam until it was nothing more than a rambling mess of tedious descriptions that added little to the story.
I am all for the details but my God this was excruciating. Even though I still had curiosity with how the story would play out, I simply could not torture myself anymore. Decent potential, but the lack of editing ruins it.

I, however enjoyed it, and when I saw a kindle daily deal of all his books I decided to grab a bunch. I figured if I enjoyed his low rated book than subsequently his older books would only get better and better for me.
And it seems like my random haul paid off because I really loved this book. I feel like reading this in public would be a great idea for shy people who want more social interaction because strangers will undoubtedly go up to you to ask what has you laughing so loudly.
While at times the writing feels a little overly embellished, for the most part I adored this collection of stories and essays that mostly focused on David's attempts to learn the french language and his holidays in France. It was hilarious and I can't tell if it has made me more or less likely to try to attempt learning that language myself in the future.
Overall fun read, loved the bite sized chapters and would recommend this to anyone who enjoys dry and slightly dark humour. 4.5/5
