Gibson ended up being a pleasant surprise. I didn't know how much I needed this unique and darkly gothic Brides of Dracula retelling, but this was pretty cool. I will say that it took me a minute to get into the style, but really though the format of the novel really made the whole thing work for me. I'll now have to read everything by this author, and I wouldn't mind a return to this world in the future....more

So much happens and there's a lot to keep track of - I'm glad their was a glossary and appendix included because that was quite a useful too. As cool as it was though, I still felt somewhat out of the loop with this novel, but I would still really love to watch the live action TV show someday. I'm not sure if I'll continue with the novels or not though. Visuals might help make more sense of all of it for me, honestly....more

I wanted to absolutely love The Absinthe Underground by Jamie Pacton, but unfortunately I ended up preferring the idea of more than anything. My main I wanted to absolutely love The Absinthe Underground by Jamie Pacton, but unfortunately I ended up preferring the idea of more than anything. My main issue throughout were both Sybil and Esme. They grated on my nerves to no end, but then again maybe I'm just too old. I also wasn't a fan of how the confrontation went down at the ending - seemed like a bit of a cop out. I also was expecting more in terms of the magic system. Maybe the novel being compared to Holly Black's stories worked against me. Finally, something that took me out of the story were the references within it to the real life artists Alphonse Mucha and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. I know this story is inspired by Belle Epoque Paris and the posters that appear (and cover of the novel itself) are inspired by their works, but naming them directly in the fantasy city of Severon didn't work for me. That said, after all of them at I would still like to try more from Jamie Pacton in the future as I did like her style....more

What Feasts at Night (Sworn Soldier #2) by T. Kingfisher is a great historical fantasy horror sequel. Honestly, I'm just happy to read more to read from this author as she's quickly become a favorite. I didn't quite stick with me and I don't think I quite liked it as much as What Moves the Dead though. It wasn't quite as creepy and it's a bit too slow even if it's a fairly short novella. Either way, if you were a fan of book one you'll have to give this one a chance as well....more
