The Guard of Adriane, is set on an alternate Earth, and the city of Adriane is said to probably be in Europe, as per the author's note at the beginning.
While the initial concept showed potential from the description, the execution didn't quite live up to the anticipated excitement. This reads like a children's book rather than YA, interactions between characters felt contrived, lacking authenticity with noticeable inconsistencies in character development and believability during key events. Also, the dialogue felt very childish and the pacing was awkward.
Anyways!
What I want to talk about is how this book begins. I don't understand why this started the way it did, surely this could have been different.
This starts... in a very strange and honestly it gave me the ick and made me feel uncomfortable.
We meet our fmc Princess Diana, yes exactly like Princess Diana - that's all I could think of the entire time I was reading this - also I want to add her mom is literally Queen Victoria - I'm sorry but no, it just feels weird to read and it makes me cringe.
Diana is a 12-year-old princess. She is having trouble sleeping and walks in on her parents reading comments about her in the Alexandria Weekly-the newspaper; these comments were of the 12-year-old Princess Diana's ‘developing breasts’ and how people would like to fuck her. Which is a very WEIRD and uncomfortable way to start a book, and is not something I want to visualize. Mind you this was within the first 4 pages and just no thank you, I was just done with this book at this point.
But I tried to give this a chance since the author sent me an ARC; thank you so much but it wasn't for me!
It soon gets ridiculous. When the Princess and her best friend go on a small shopping trip to the mall (disguised of course), someone spots her and attempts to kidnap her. All of a sudden a mysterious stranger (Rick) saves her, and when he is brought to the castle, her parents ask him "how he can be repaid" for saving their dear daughter.
His response:
"I want to live in the palace," Rick said. "My folks want me to move out of the house now that I'm twenty, but I don't have anywhere to go. And what better place to live than here? I could do odd jobs around the palace, to earn my keep."
AND HER PARENTS AGREED?? WHAT - but of course only with a background check.
This leads to her parents wanting to up her security, 3-4 guards are chosen to compete for the role, unsure why there had to be a weird sword fight/battle thing, especially when Diana already has her eyes set on Eric - the 16-year-old guard, and thus begins their forbidden romance.
I love a good forbidden, close-proximity romance but this just wasn't it, and I'm so sad because the description holds so much promise. ...more
I struggled to read this - I had a hard time with the pacing and the writing style… while the concept was great and the plot interesting, I jusdnf 68%

I’ll never let you go. I’ll do everything in my power to keep you safe, even if I have to sacrifice my own life for yours. You are all that matters now.”
I LOVED this so much!
This had everything I love! Greek gods, pirates, a prophecy, and an enemies-to-lovers storyline with a slow-burn romance that's utterly swoon-worthy had me completely immersed. I just couldn't put it down!
War of the Land, the second installment in the Olympian Wars series, can be read as a standalone. This was set 10 years after the events of the first book, War of the Sea, which I have not read yet, but from the description of that book, it seems like there are a few familiar characters.
Prometheus, takes center stage, challenging the heavens in a high-stakes match. Although, we first get to know him as Conleth, the mysterious Duke of Eloqua, who is arranged to marry Princess Savina. He is our charismatic hero, a Titan with a hint of cockiness. I just loved his character; sweet and so protective! Princess Savina is a bold and determined demigod unafraid to champion those she holds dear. She possesses powers over life and death and becomes a target in Zeus's vendetta. She is destined for an arranged marriage before her 18th birthday to fulfill a prophecy, and Savina becomes entwined in a plot to avert impending destruction.
I loved our main characters so much! Their chemistry and banter, their personalities complimented each other well. And their slow-burn romance was literally perfect!
The descriptions were so vivid, like a movie playing in my head; it felt like I was there, with the characters. I love this world and can't wait to read more of it!
“Come, let’s sit.” Her tail sundered itself, morphing into humanoid legs of sculptural grace—long, lithe, and impossibly flawless. Her emerald scales elongated and fused, evolving into a floor-sweeping skirt slit at the sides, through which her alabaster feet emerged as she descended the aqueous stairway to a ground paved with polished bone. Her hair, as if imbued with ethereal life, soared skyward like a splash of red wine released from its goblet, unraveling itself into elegant, pillowy curls that draped over her shoulders. My mouth dropped. I’d never seen the transition from one form to the next.

eh I'm not sure how to feel about this. It definitely wasn't what I expected it to be.
It was like watching a movie about someone's life, watching themeh I'm not sure how to feel about this. It definitely wasn't what I expected it to be.
It was like watching a movie about someone's life, watching them go through their daily tasks, except Sasha is on a mini vacation, and she kind of met a guy who she's slowly getting to know.
Honestly, it lacked romance but also it was very slow-burn, with HEA.
Honestly.. the first book was just OK, and this one is taking me way too long to read, or rather my interest in it is just not there at all. And honesHonestly.. the first book was just OK, and this one is taking me way too long to read, or rather my interest in it is just not there at all. And honestly, I don't think I like this series. I thought this was supposed to be a "stalker romance" but it's turned into something else that I don't care to continue.
The only reason I even continued the first book was to find out what happened with her great-grandma and grandma. This storyline was far more enjoyable than Adeline's.
Plus, Adeline is the dumbest fmc ever, I guess this is the main reason I stopped reading book 2 - after Dr. Garrison tried to get her out of there. He was trying to ‘save’ her (help her escape) and she stabs him before they actually escape which leads to chaos and her recapture.
She could have got the scalpel and hid it for later AFTER escaping but nooooo of course not that does not happen......more
Olena Nikitin has done it again! By far one of my favourite authors I've found this year!
Magic and Medicine by Olena Nikitin is a paranormal urban spicy romantasy with everything you want and more. Slavic mythology, vampires, werewolves, and witches, with a mafia aspect. It was a delight to read!
Our fmc, Sara, an emergency department doctor, is suddenly immersed in a realm of magic when she sees a dead man come back to life after being stabbed with Chernobog's dagger. And when this man's boss is unable to use his compulsion on her with his magic, she is thrust into a world where magic is real, and she has the potential to kill gods.
The narrative unfolds with an exceptional and distinctive storyline, boasting a rich tapestry of well-crafted characters. Everything about this book is simply extraordinary.
I really liked Sara, her dark humor, sarcasm, and resolute determination. She often confronts challenges with a strong sense of resolve, although her emotional reactions can be unpredictable... in a way, she reminds me of Ina from the author's previous series, Season's War. And Leszek, I love him so much!! He was once a powerful deity now a mob boss, he exudes an aura of power, dominance, and devilish charm. His affection for Sara is unmistakable. I loved watching their romance progress.
It has a nice mixture of fantasy, romance, and action and doesn’t only focus on the relationship between the main characters. I can't wait for the next book in this standalone series, Fangs and Family!
