In this collected American edition are printed seven different stories: “Arizona 1880”, “Dick Digger’s Gold Mine”, “Lucky Luke’s Double”, “Rodeo”, “Desperado City”, “The Buffalo Creek gold rush” and “Lucky Luke versus Cigarette Cesar”. Creative Team: Creator, Writer & Illustrator: Morris FRANCO-BELGIAN COMICS The collaboration between France and Belgium in the genre of comic strips & comic books is monumental, figuring many of the most iconic examples of the genre, not only Asterix, but also The Smurfs, Tin Tin, Lucky Luke, Le Petit Spirou, and many, many, MANY others… …generating their own inner genre named, obviously, Franco-Belgian comics, considered along with United States & Great Britain comics and Japanese manga, as one of the three most influential and relevant examples of the comic book field. (I plan to read in the future other titles of this genre, therefore, in the first volume of each title, it will be normal to find this same general introduction.) NOTHING LIKE AMERICAN WESTERN…FROM EUROPE! It’s curious how the American Western is a genre that sometimes is better portraited outside of United States like the Italian “Spaguetti Western” and this Franco-Belgian comic book of Lucky Luke becoming easily the best known and popular “american” cowboy in comics. I can understand that nowadays is not recommended to promote smocking (but I wonder why drinking alcohol doesn’t have the same kind of witch hunt) but it’s kinda absurd that Morris, its creator, were critized for having Lucky Luke smocking in its classic run since if he was an adult in the old American west, it’s only logical that he would smoking (and drinking alcohol) due in that era of history was normal that, you can’t (or you shouldn’t) re-write history, bad or good, history should be told or portraited like it happened. In this gorgeous first volumen of the american edition known as “The Complete Collection”, you won’t have the most characteristic look of Lucky Luke (in fact you can appreciate how the look of the face of Lucky Luke is evolutioning during the run of this first seven tales but without still reaching his most recognizable look) but unlike the first story of Tin Tin where the artwork is just awful, here you will find gorgeous artwork in characters and scenarios. Jolly Jumper, his white horse, the “smartest horse in the west”, is without a doubt smart and even sometimes you hear him talk (like Scooby-Doo) but later you can read his thoughts. Also, you will find an extensive information about Morris, his personal life, his inspirations for this comic book and the impact of the series. Arizona 1880 (4 stars) It’s the very first Lucky Luke story with a very cartoonish look in Lucky Luke and while the story is quite simple, it’s quite entertaining and a worthy beginning, where Lucky Luke without much background of his personal past, he reaches Nugget City and having to deal with an insidious criminal and his pair of minions. Dick Digger’s Gold Mine (5 stars) Dick Digger is an old man that he can’t just keep his mouth shut about having found a gold mine and the same pair of minions (but just them, the boss is still in jail I guess) are starting to look for the mine without realizing that they already have the map in a bottle of Dick Digger. Lucky Luke’s Double (4 stars) Lucky Luke arrives to another town and he finds out that there is a criminal in prison looking just like him (even the same wardrobe!) and the band of that criminal kidnaps Lucky Luke to interchange him in the Town’s Jail. Rodeo (4 stars) Lucky Luke in participating in a rodeo event, when a nefarious participant steals the money of the rodeo grand prize. Desperado City (5 stars) Lucky Luke arrives to Desperado City which is a very dirty and sinful town, where he soon enough will have to “clean” the town. Easily the best written tale in this first collection. The Buffalo Creek gold mine (5 stars) A very funny tale where people starting to think that there is gold in Buffalo Creek which is only a creek but suddenly you have train and a whole town emerging due the bunch of people arriving there to look for the gold. Easily the funniest tale (showing a true old cartoon style of narrative) of this first collection. Lucky Luke versus Cigarette Cesar (3 stars) The title explains much of what happens, where indeed Lucky Luke meets this character known as Cigarette Cesar and he has to face him to bring him to justice. It’s not a bad story but easily is the weakest of the collected tales in this first collection. ...more |

Creative Team: Writers: Joss Whedon & Brett Matthews Illustrator: Will Conrad GONE TOO SOON ...A ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying. Firefly is one of those TV jewels that they were gone too soon. With just one season, it was unfair that the TV series didn't have a chance to fully stretch its legs... ...so when the eventual movie was out, the fans got thrilled... ...however some of the characters weren't where the fans remembered. This miniseries show you how and why, those characters came to be in the places that you found them in the movie... ...in the middle of a failed bank heist... ...and an old enemy looking for bloody revenge!!! You get the characters faithfully portraited, and definitely showing why Malcolm Reynolds is one of the most impressive sci-fi characters, since he's not a bad guy, BUT... ...a saint or a fool ain't he, neither. This is a fine Firefly tale, leading to the Serenity film, and while it has the limitations of having only three comic book issues to develop it, I think that it was quite adequate told to learn what you wanted to know about the changes met at the beginning of the closure movie. Certainly I was able to enjoy to the fullest this Annual in that moment. So, trust me! If you haven’t read this Annual yet, wait until having the above mentioned TPB, and you’ll have a blast (in time) with the Annual,… …and you’ll never see Eva Bell in the same way before! EVA BELL RULES Eva Bell (aka Tempus) is a mutant with chronokinesis (a cool way to say that she can manipulates time) and she is one of the students in the Cyclops’ new school for mutants. Eva was still a teenager, just introduced to the X-Men (in the middle of issues #2 & #3 (collected in Volume 1) when they were attacked by the Avengers Alpha Team (Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Captain Marvel, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Spider-Woman) and Eva stopped them in a second (literally stopped in a second!), the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes beaten by a teenager just discovering her mutant powers and with none training at all… …priceless! And it was evident since then that we must expect great things from Eva Bell in the future… …or any other time period! GROWING PAINS In Uncanny X-Men #17 (collected in the Volume 3 “The Good, The Bad and the Inhuman”) the rookie students of Cyclops were in a training session in their Danger Room, and in the middle of the mayhem of that,… …Eva Bell disappears. Just some minutes later, she re-appears. Eva seemed odd, kinda more mature, sad gaze, sensible. Now, in this Annual finally we know what happened with Eva Bell… …in those “some minutes”. So far, at that moment, Eva was able to create “freezing time bubbles”, but she learned in the hard way, not only she was able to do a lot more about time, but that she’s a near Omega-level mutant! Time jumps out of her control, Eva was meeting colorful (and depending of your knowledge about Marvel Universe) and familiar characters (no, I won’t spoil!) in different time periods from the future and the past,… …until meeting the Sorcerer Supreme from the far future! (Nope, I won’t tell who is neither!) There, she will learn a lot about controlling her powers, but that… …takes time. How much, I won’t tell, but since it was quite a significant amount of time, she took roots,… …and something more. Trust me, this a truly astonishing and uncanny story, and if you are fan of Eva Bell, this is a must-read tale. The only thing is that this is the Part 1 (of 2) of the “Secret Life of Eva Bell” where continues in the All-New X-Men Annual #1 (so, now I’ll need to be on the look out for this! Dang!) ...more |

HIM!!!) & Matt Wagner Illustrator: Esteve Polls THE D IS SILENT, THE Z ISN’T A crossover that it’s too good to be true… …but happily IS TRUE!!! Django Freeman, the character developed in the film Django Unchained meets Diego de la Vega better known as El Zorro!!! An epic adventure that only Quentin Tarantino and Matt Wagner could tell! The story is set after the events of Django Unchained AND when Diego de la Vega is now an old man (but still be able to kick butts!). Not matter that it’s quite evident that the main influence for Zorro (in this crossover) is the classic TV series starring Guy Williams, in this case, Bernardo, the mute servant instead of being Spanish, he is Indian (Native American), that while it looks a little bit to Lone Ranger to me (not complaining, just saying) I think that’s a good idea. El Zorro freed California for the oppression of corrupt Spanish officials, and Django Freeman saved his dear Hildi from slavery; however there are still injustices out there… …El Zorro and Django are needed again! A cunning villain designed a plan that it took like 20 years to be able to have all the pieces in the right places in his scheme, but it worths the time since… …now that villain is owner of all Arizona!!! In fact, he has a royal title… …the Archduke of Arizona!!! Presenting a claim, now the law supports his rule over the whole territory of Arizona. Abusing of the Indian tribes, treating them as slaves. The oppressed cry for help. Diego de la Vega, while now old, he still has good hearing. El Zorro rides again! And now with Django as partner! THE D IS SILENT, THE COMIC BOOK ISN’T If you are dissapointed that this would be a Tarantino project without a kickin’ butt soundtrack… …you won’t be! THERE IS A TIME... I am fan of Back to the Future film trilogy, so it wasn’t hard (at all) to decide to read thi A wonderful way to invest time! THERE IS A TIME... I am fan of Back to the Future film trilogy, so it wasn’t hard (at all) to decide to read this book. It’s a book describing all the behind-the-scenes process implied to present to audience the wonderful trilogy of Back to the Future since even before that the production got a green light to begin. Caseen Gaines, the author, not only have read several research books about the topic, but also he was able to make direct interviews with many people involved in the film franchise. Obviously since I am a geek, I knew a lot about the film trilogy but it was refreshing to find out several things that I didn’t know about, and also to “live” again the whole development of the trilogy, step-by-step, all the good and all the mess. The author gives away both versions of the story when it’s about a polemic issue without taking a stand, he just presents both sides of each incident, and you are the one to decide who was right or wrong, even the chance that nobody is totally right or wrong, and the truth can be found, just in the middle of both versions of how the events happened. The casting, the visual effects, the locations, the artwork, the music, the impact and the aftermath, you are a first line witness in an engaging narrative, making a true time-travelling trip to the history of one of the most beloved film franchises. To be continued... TIME FLIES WHEN... I remember having read (several years ago) a 3-part article in a Spanish-translated edition of Starlog magazine, published in Spain, where the author of the article made an AMAZING job detailing all the paradoxes created in the trilogy and certainly I had the time of my life reading the 3-parter article. (and yes, I still have those magazines, somewhere in my boxes). This book at hand isn’t about the implications and paradoxes on the script. This book is a detailed behind-the-scenes access to the whole long process that it was made to make possible the production of the iconic first film and its two sequels, making a timeless trilogy. Also, you will read about the impact of each movie, how they were received by the audience inside of USA and around the world, in the same way the aftermath involving side-projects, fan clubs and marketing in all its spectrum. Depending of how much you may know about what happened during the filmation of the trilogy, it’s likely that you will know many of the facts revealed here, but I trust that (like my own case), the book will be able to surprise here and there. Telling you some stuff that you hadn’t the slightest clue, or even if you were kind aware of some stuff, it’s quite possible that the deep exposition will be able to expand your own knowledge of certain incident and/or anecdote or giving you an unknown angle until now. To be concluded... NO TIME LIKE... While I truly think that the book deserves its my personal rating of 5 stars, since I enjoyed each second of the reading experience, I believe that some stuff wasn’t exposed as it was detailed others. There isn’t anything about the casting process for Christopher Lloyd, maybe the Bobs (Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale) always wanted him for the role of “Doc Brown” but in the book it’s told cases like that (if there’s the case at all) for support characters, so it’s odd not having at least some paragraphs dedicated to the co-star of the trilogy. During the narrative it’s clear that the author had access to many people, including key persons like Zemeckis, Gale, Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Thomas F. Wilson, etc… but my impression is that he wasn’t able to contact Michael J. Fox, since while the book have a lot about him and his life experience while filming the trilogy, when it’s about Michael it seemed to be something that he was told about by a third party and/or read somewhere, and while it’s my humble feeling about it (I can be wrong) it’s a pity not having first hand comments from the star of the film trilogy. But don’t take me wrong. The book is a real treat to any fan of Back to the Future and I am sure that if you love the trilogy as much as I do, you’ll love to read this book too. The End. ...more |

Creative Team: Creator & Writer: Scott Snyder Co-Writer: Stephen King Illustrator: Rafael Albuquerque Colorist: Dave McCaig VAMPYR VITAE ...will you tell me some good hobo stories? I mean really really spicy ones? Pearl, your ears will bleed... Scott Snyder, the creator of this comic book series, is one of the most relevant new names in the business, and being able to convince Stephen King to collaborate in his project is a proof of his rising influence around. As you can appreciate in a panel, this work honors classic works like Bram Stoker’s Dracula and the western books by Zane Grey, and since we have here a prominent female vampire character, I believe that it’s even avowed that Carmilla existed several years before of even the most famous Dracula. And of course to the now iconic “dime novels” which along with the “penny dreadfuls” were the first options to read adventure and horror at a cheap price, making them accesible to most of the people. This evolution of the American Vampire also is a headway from previous works like Blade, presenting a day-walker vampire, and Crimson where you witness the next step in the evolution of vampires (in that case being able to manipulate fire (at first, and later more powers)). While here the evolved vampires aren’t showing magical powers (at least not in this first volume) but it’s the idea of being an evolution of the “old European vampires” and certainly using prominently the advantage of that these evolved vampires are day-walkers. It’s kinda funny the whole deal of day-walker vampires, since in the novel of Dracula, the title character was able to be in the open under sunlight, true, he was less powerful, but the key thing is that he was able to walk on daylight. However, the Universal Pictures’ movies became so iconic in our psyches (and that’s where they inserted this limitation to vampires) that we aren’t able to process the concept of vampires standing to sunlight. Another interesting development in this story is that while regular vampires’ weaknesses are common knowledge (something that even the evil vampires comment here), we still have to start to discover in a slowly way what kind of weaknesses have the “American Vampires”, along with the rest of their unique skills and traits. BLOODY NARRATIVE Nobody’ll believe half of this stuff. In this first volume of this comic book series, Scott Snyder is in charge of the “present” storyarc, which is happening in 1925, in Hollywood, California; while Stephen King is in charge of the “past” storyarc, which is set between 1880, in Sidewinder, Colorado, and 1912, Cruces, New Mexico (featuring several dates and places). Each issue, collected on this volume, presents both storyarcs, showing what it’s becoming kinda regular in many TV shows nowadays. Also, it’s relevant to point out that this is really the first comic book story where Stephen King writes since previous apparitions have been comic book adaptations of original prose novels, while here is trully an original story. I want to highlight the great artwork by Rafael Albuquerque which he does the art in both storyarcs but presenting them with totally different art styles, talking good about his versatility. Obviously with the support of the colorist Dave McCaig, to give a visually distinctive effect on each storyarc. IT’S GOOD TO BE BAD How come the badman always gets the most of the ink? Because bad sells. Monsters sell. For better or worse, usually, many stories are evaluated in according to how effective were the villains, not matter if they lose at the end. However, in American Vampire isn’t about good vs. evil, but maybe it can be more accurate to say that evil vs. lesser evil. Some characters can be seen as motivated due good reasons but they are definitely doing bloody violent acts without any kind of remorse. Real human nature at its best. They are vampires. They are hunters. They are killers. And if you aren’t careful, they will drink your blood out of your neck without hesitation. And since you have two different timelines in the book, you will be able to get some characters showing totally different attitudes, giving more richness to the whole story. Definitely I want to read more of this comic book series, so if the creative team doesn’t mind if I tag along, but yes, I know that I need to keep up. ...more |

A fair reading but it wasn’t all that I expected.

GOD IS EVERYWHERE I wasn’t sure what to expect about this novel on the angle of being “historical Christian romance”, due the “Christian” part of the genre. I am a religious person, but I don’t think that we should bother the Almighty for anything or even mentioned him if you really don’t need him at that moment. But, I didn’t mind all the kinda forced-in comments and references to Bible, church, God, etc... Since while I certainly I am very open minded about doubts in the men-managed religious institutions, but I am aware that I do mind whenever comment about not believing in God, in any kind of form of higher power of your preference. I am aware that I do mind comments about total atheists, since while I think that people can live without religions, I can’t conceive how not living without the faith in God, any form of your preference of the concept. So, now I know how that kind of things are managed in this kind of novels, so it was a good experience, since while kinda forced in some moments during the narrative, there isn’t anything wrong to pray and/or just “speak” to God. Honestly, I feel more alienated (even at least for a moment) when I found a comment about a character in a novel telling that they don’t believe in any kind of God. GOOD PREMISE The premise of the novel is really good since it’s about a young woman that after losing her job in the theater business in Chicago, in the ends of 1881, she is forced to engage into a kind of job that she didn’t think that it would be in her future, on earlies 1882, she convinced to the bosses of a local office of the Pinkerton Agency, that she would be able to be a valuable asset to them as an undercover agent in a dangerous case in the middle of the Wild West, in the territory of Arizona. The lead female character is forced to use all her theatrical skills in acting but even more vital in disguising and make-up, to perform two different characters during the investgation. She has to look as an older widow and her young provocative niece. Both characterizations are challenges to her since, while the young niece is of her own age, the “niece” should be a kind of woman that she never has been, and even look sexier than she ever thought possible to be herself. She needs to live in Pickford, a Wild West town, in the Arizona territory, to investigate the case of a unknown band of robbers whom has been attacking silver lingots deliveries made by a local community of mine owners. However, since the possibility that there must have an “inside job” involved, while the mine owners are the ones who hire the services of the Pinkerton Agency, she must keep her true identity as a secret even from the mine owners. Keeping the secret even from Steven Pierce, a young noble man, owner of one of the mines, that she is starting to fall in love with him. NOT THE FINAL ACT AS I EXPECTED Without doing any spoiler, I will do my best to explain my dissapointments on the final part of the novel that I think it was been developed in a very fair way. Ellie Moore, unemployed theater girl with skills on acting, costume making, and make-up, she is forced to convince to the people of a Pinkerton Agency, that she would be able to take a dangerous case in the Wild West to uncover a band of silver lingots’ robbers. To do that, Ellie Moore should disguise herself into two different characters: The old widow Lavinia Stewart, and her young niece Jessie Monroe, and she isn’t as any of the two characters, curiously enough, her personality is kinda more related to the old widow than the young attractive girl. It was interesting the challenge of a young woman without experience in detective work, trying to uncover a band of robbers. However, while I was aware that she wasn’t an experienced investigator, I expected that she would develop a fair amount to skill in the process and even have some glimpses of intuity about it. Sadly, I think that she isn’t able to deduce anything and basically all the case is almost served to her on a silver tray (pun intended), even the very villains explaining to her, why and how they were doing the robberies. Therefore, while she is quite able to fool everybody in the town and to perform with success two different characters to make her investigation, once we reached the point of solving the case, well, I expected some hints of brilliant deducing, the proper analysis of clues, but that just didn't happened. However, I enjoyed fair enough the reading in a general sense, but certainly in the particular angle as a detective novel, it was certainly weak in that area. ...more |

This is the first novel in the “Longmire Mysteries” book series. MODERN-DAY SHERIFF I have watched the TV adaptation o Solid narrative with guts! This is the first novel in the “Longmire Mysteries” book series. MODERN-DAY SHERIFF I have watched the TV adaptation of Longmire since its beginning. I decided to watch it since it has three cast members that I was familiarized and I like to watch them to perform: -Katee Sackhoff, from Battlestar Galactica (the re-imagined TV series) and she was honestly my main reason to watch this TV series. She plays “Deputy Victoria (Vic) Moretti”. But I didn’t mind to find too… -Cassidy Freeman, from Smallvile TV series. She plays “Cady Longmire”. -Lou Diamond Phillips, from La Bamba film. He plays “Henry Standing Bear”. Also, I like the concept of a modern-day sheriff, investigating murders. Sheriff Walt Longmire, is the sheriff in the fictional Absaroka County. While the TV series is different in certain elements and dynamics than the original book series, certainly I can say that any fan of the TV series would enjoy to read the novels. THEY AREN’T FOOLING AROUND The first novel introduces all the main characters (even several that you haven’t never met in the TV series) of the book series, along with the mystery to solve, employing more scientific and police procedures than you have witnessed in most of the TV show. Sheriff Walt Longmire is getting used to live alone, since his wife died like 4 years ago (here was for natural causes), also there was a rough case that it didn’t end well, so he isn’t on his top when you meet him in the book. An American Native girl was raped by several white teenagers but they weren’t punished by the court as they should… …now, those teenagers, already young men, are starting to appear dead, one by one. And since they weren’t model citizens, there are just too many suspects, even closer than Walt Longmire would prefer, and while he isn’t showing a single tear for those scumbags, he is the law in Absaroka County and he has a duty to do. Sheriff Walt Longmire is tough man, he has seen a lot in his life, he has endured a lot, but maybe nothing of those hard experience prepared him… …for such visceral twist in this murder investigation. Revenge is dish best served cold, Klingons know it,… …and Sheriff Walt Longmire will have to assimilate it too. ...more |

Now that I got your attention, I can elaborate on my review of the book. Eve Smith, a young girl of mixed origins, "white" & "indian", helps a search group made by former Texas Rangers and other people to look for the whereabouts of a failed expedition in the mountains. She is the narrator of this tale and it's wonderful to get it through her eyes and perspective. Cool believable characters, wonderful atmosphere and lots of action. REALITY & FICTION I had the time of my life reading this novel. Absolutely great! The author did a wonderful work of research not only about the historic facts about the Donners' Party expedition but also about the ambiance, language and customs on that particular time, on the western territories leading to California in 1851. One of best things in this novel is that while it can be fit in the genre of zombie books in a general sense, it develops its own rules, where while some stuff is what you can expect of zombie books, there are many other things that are different. The novel explodes in a very inventive ways the legends and folkore from the Native-american culture along with the richness of the western tales. While certainly there is the paranormal twist to increase the appealing of the story, that element isn't abused and you get only the right amount of it. There are some cliché moments, but hey! what is a zombie book without those cliché moments? Mmh? Right? But I can assure you that there are many unexpected moments too, making it a truly entertaining western novel. ...more |

MISLEADING TITLE Certainly after that I read the excellent novel True Grit (See my review about that book HERE) I decided that I wanted to read more books by Charles Portis. I even do some research about their books and while I found that all of them have an interesting premise, I had to choose one of them, and so, my pick was this one. Well, first of all, the title The Dog of the South is very misleading if not a bad choice of title, just like in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (The Goblet of Fire? Sure the item has its moment on the story but hardly described about what it's the novel, I always thought that a best title could be "Harry Potter and the Tri-Wizard Tournament). Well, getting back to this novel, in here, it's pretty much the same, since the "The Dog of the South" is the name of a bus, an old school bus, repainted and remodeled inside to serve as a trailer for journeys. I was mesmerized by the idea of reading about this bus traveling the roads of Mexico and Central America, well, the bus barely appears twice brief moments in the book and the vehicle never moved itself an inch of the trailer park where it was abandoned. The bus was abandoned! Why the heck the book is named after a vehicle that ended being not important or relevant to the story? Sure, the fact that the bus is broken, his owner, Dr. Reo Symes, needs to ask for a lift to Ray Midge (the main protagonist) and both of them became travelling partners. However, I still find a poor choice to name the novel after a school bus that hardly appears in the plot. HUMOR... REALLY? About the characters, I labeled the book as "humor", mainly because I am a nice man, geez! Since I hardly smiled twice in the whole reading experience. I didn't find the characters likable or amusing. They are colourful? Oh, yes, they are colourful alright, but believe, that's not always a good thing. When you are reading the moments of Ray Midge, the main character, when he is alone and/or not interacting with anybody else in the book, you find him moderately likable, you notice his peculiarities but you really didn't get uncomfortable with him, but once he starts to interacts with somebody especially Dr. Symes, oh boy! You don't know which side to pick, since even Midge became quite cumbersome. However, the rest of characters are like a popurri of different styles of nuisance. You just have to think in the most irritating person that you ever met at some moment in your life, and I am sure that you will find a personality twin over here, in this book. And trust me, even when you think that some of them aren't so bad, sooner or later, they will come to your nerves. UNEXPECTED READING EXPERIENCE By the way, I don't know if all synopsis have a similar mistake, but the one that I read before of deciding to read the novel, it said that the road trip will end on Honduras, but it's not Honduras, it's British Honduras, in other words, it's Belize, that it's an entire totally different country. Maybe, you won't bother with something like that, BUT since I am from Central America, I bother when people (the publishing house most likely) write synopsis about a book and making foolish errors like that. At some point Honduras, the real Honduras is mentioned, but, it's not the same. PORTIS-VERSE? Since this is only the second book that I read by Charles Portis, I am not sure, but I almost can bet that at some moments in the story, Ray Midge did some brief encounters with characters and/or places from other of his novels Masters of Atlantis and Gringos, not matter that those books were written later of this one. Anyway, I am not sure of that but it's a feeling that I got when I was reading due that I read the synopsis of those books. NOT MY KIND OF ROAD TRIP NOVEL Another thing that bothered me a lot was I think that the very purpose of a "road trip" novel is to acomplish what the main character set as his/her goal in the journey, and well, oh boy! I won't make spoilers but geez! I don't even want to go that point again. Let's say that I still think that True Grit is one of the best novels that I ever read. Honest! I love True Grit! And I still want to try some other books by Charles Portis in the future. However, my only recommendation at this point is not to pick this book as your first and/or second choice to read about this author. But, who knows? No two people read the same book. Maybe some of you will find it really amusing and a wonderful experience. I have not bad feelings or anything to the author due this particular novel. So, I'll be really glad if some other readers can get a positive reading experience out of this novel. Sadly, it wasn't the case for me. ...more |

I love this book!
I was barely starting to read it and I was already amazed of how much I was enjoying the reading experience and how much I like t I love this book! I was barely starting to read it and I was already amazed of how much I was enjoying the reading experience and how much I like the way how it was written. Definitely I want to read other books by Charles Portis and I hope to do it in the near future. I wasn't ignorant about the story due I remember that I watched the film with John Wayne at some moment and definitely I watched the recent remake with Jeff Bridges. I would not put a thief in my mouth to steal my brains. I chose to read the book mainly on the basis that I want to include some westerns in my shelves and in that way to add this genre to my range of literary genres. However, I never expected to get hooked in the way that I got, even with a story that basically I knew what happens. But the selection of words by the author and the mix of clever humor with hardboiled drama was a wonderful experience. I read about the other books by Portis and I am glad to see that almost all get in the range of western-like stories and that they have that same combination of humor and drama. I am sure that Portis can easily become one of my new favorite authors. Charles Portis is a master creating characters, the young and determined Mattie Ross, the rude and bold "Rooster" Cogburn, and even LaBoeuf, that he didn't click to me on the recent film, I learned to understood the character here on the original novel. And I can assure you that the rest of characters not matter how small their parts can be, they were quite well developed. Something that I liked too, it's that since this is a story about vengeance, well, vengeance has its price, you can't expect to embrace that dark feeling and thinking that you will be able to get back to your life without changes and obviously without spoiling anything, you will realize what I mean, if you read this great book. You must pay for everything in this world one way and another. There is nothing free except the Grace of God. You cannot earn that or deserve it. The title of the novel, True Grit is chosen in an excellent way resuming the heart and soul of the story. Definitely one of the best western novels that you can read. Highly recommended. ...more |

They are taken from its “classic” era as well from more modern times. And they are presented using color only if the original publication had it. THE COMEBACK Rating: **** ( 4 stars ) Writers: John Wagner & Alan Grant Illustrator: Garry Leach What’s he saying? Gorilla…? Godzilla…? I’ve got it -- Thriller! Jaxon Prince was a Pop Music mega-star in the 20th Century, who became famous not only by his music career but also due his extravagant hobbies in his personal life. In 1995, he decided to be freeze in cryogenics and not be awaken until 2109! Just in time for the era of the Judges! I am sure that by now, even without the help of the illustrations, you must already guessed that this “Jaxon Prince” is a parody of nothing less than Michael Jackson, and it’s very likely that this story was written way before of his sad death some few year ago. So, reading now this amusing story makes it even more astonishing than before. Jaxon Prince is awaken but due the 20th Century’s cryogenics technology was in diapers, he didn’t make good in his “return”, suffering of severe brain damage, making him more like a “zombie” than his true former self (Thriller, anyone?). The brain damage is a major problem since in his will he disposed that it must be a “comeback concert” at the very afternoon of his return to the land of the living, and the lawyers’ firm doesn’t stop the concert to avoid having to pay for unfulfilling duties by them. Judge Dredd, along with Judge Clint and a full detail of judges are in charge of the security for the concert... ...a concert like nobody could predict! JUDGE TYRANNOSAUR Rating: ** ( 2 stars ) Writer: Mark Millar Illustrator: Ron Smith This nonsense has gone far enough. A wacky story a genetically created tyrannosaur (something kinda common in the wastelands of the Cursed Earth) comes to the “rescue” of a kidnapper’s victim. One unlucky kidnapper gets eaten (literally) by a hungry tyrannosaur and this action helps to save the victim, one sweet granny who is the oldest citizen of Mega-City One. The population is thankful with the mighty monster and of course they are demanding a reward to the newest hero, and why not appointing it as a fully-fledged judge! Strangest things have happened before in Mega-City One... ...no, wait! Never something stranger than this happened before!!! You can ask to the Mega-City One’s Jurassic expert, Dr. Mike Chrichton! BOOK OF THE DEAD Rating: **** ( 4 stars ) Writers: Grant Morrison & Mark Millar Illustrator: Dermont Power I’m not here to see the sights, Judge Kamun. A cultural Exchange program is held between Mega-City One and Luxor (the Egyptian mega-city). Judge Rameses from Luxor’s Justice Department will travel to Mega-City One, and Luxor will have, for a week, Judge Dredd! Just in time for Dredd, to be involved in a paranormal attack by a mummy with a weird predilection for the blood of judges! Only in Mega-Cit… no wait! This happened in Luxor!!! Note: A brief cameo by Judge Hershey at the end of the story. RAD BLOOD Rating: ***** ( 5 stars ) Writer: Dan Abnett Illustrator: Ron Smith Swallow judgement creep! Interesting story about the investigation of massive disappearances of citizens of Mega-City One that they supposed to leave the city for a religious town located in the wastelands of the Cursed Earth, right in the middle of a zone with high rates of radiation. In an overpopulated city like Mega-City One, one would think that the merciless judges would look as a blessing that many people would leave the city. However, judges don’t like mysteries and certainly is a riddle why not one single citizen has been heard again once they leave Mega-City One for this “promised land” in the middle of the Cursed Earth. So, Judge Dredd along with a squad of judges go to follow the route and asking questions in that famed town. STATUE OF JUDGEMENT Rating: *** ( 3 stars ) Writers: John Wagner Illustrator: John Burns You break the law you pay the Price, creep! The Justice Department is reconstructing the famed “Statue of Judgement”, a huge monument (even easily almost the double as big as the Statue of Liberty) to honor the work of the Judges. Many people is unhappy for the monument and manifestations are held. Judge Dreed along with a detail of judges are controlling the situation to avoid getting at any level of physical violence. Meanwhile, Judge Hershey is attending the call of a rental complain that it will have an explosive link to the situation over the zone of the Statue of Judgement. DOMINOES Rating: **** ( 4 stars ) Writer: Simon Spurrier Illustrators: Laurence Campbell, Kris Justice & Chris Blythe Diplomatic statement. We send our best. They don’t drokk us around. Hershey is now Chief Judge and she is sending a “diplomatic” team commanded by Judge Dredd to NeoCuba, to make an exchange of prisoners. Small talk. Eating canapes. Just the kind of work that Dredd “loves”. While Judge Dredd is dealing with Presidente Diego, the current “El Castro”, during a diplomatic party, another operation, made by a mysterious woman, is getting into action. Nothing like Mega-City One’s style of “diplomacy”. BIRTHDAY BOY Rating: ***** ( 5 stars ) Writer: Pat Mills Illustrators: Vince Locke & Chris Blythe Time to cut the cake… and open my “present”! Excellent story, easily the best one in this second collected volumen and a great way to close this book. A mysterious murderer was found guilty in 1980 and he was charged with a sentence of one hundred and fifty years in prison. That should do it! The problem is that it didn’t do it!!! After one hundred and fifty years, in 2108, right in the middle of the era of the Judges, Paul Klesa has to be set free since... ...he did his time in prison! One hundred and fifty years and he is still alive, young, and none medical scan has ever show any clue to his condition. So, he must be set free! Law has been served! That’s why boys and girls that instead of declaring a quantity of years (not matter how long it seems to sound), it’s better to declare “life imprisonment” as the sentence... ...just in case. But this is only the beginning of the new chapter in the blood trail made by this mysterious murderer and Judge Dredd won’t believe how far he will need to go to trace this trail. HIGH SPIRITS Rating: ***** ( 5 stars ) Writer: Ian Edginton Illustrator: Dave Taylor I’m a dead girl walking… This is easily the second best story in this second collected volumen. Judge Dredd must deal with strange cases of sudden violent histeria where the only connection between all the suspects is that all of them were workers in a multi-planetary company. The case is delicate enough since that company is hugely important to the finances of Mega-City One and due the alien (as in literally out of the world) origin of the company, its building has a diplomatic immunity status. But one good thing is that Judge Dredd won’t have to face this strange case alone... ...Exorcist Judge Lamia is on the case! When you thought that nothing could be cooler than a Street Judge or a Psi Judge... ...appears an Exorcist Judge!!! And she even has weapons to attack demons and she is able to talk to ghosts too!!! Priceless!!! REHAB Rating: ***** ( 5 stars ) Writer: Al Ewing Illustrator: Karl Richardson In this city… I am the community! Amusing story involving interdimensional travel, where another kind of Judges, from a parallel dimension want to “help” to the rehab of criminals of Mega-City One. Big mistake! Since those good natured “judges” aren’t prepared to deal with real bad scum like the criminal kind of Mega-City One, but neither they are prepared to deal with real judges!!! And I told you that this is a parallel dimension, right? Be prepared for “Good Ol’” Judge Joe versus “Bad A$%” Judge Dredd!!! Judge Joe Dredd x 2, what else can you ask? ...more |
