I will say right off the bat that this is not going to be the book for everyone. It is extremely slow-paced at times, and for more than half of the book, there isn’t a single likeable character. I think it just depends on how immersed in the atmosphere and how intrigued by the mystery you are.
For me, I found the setting and atmosphere wholly immersive. I also thoroughly enjoyed the writing, which felt so authentic, but I can see how it might be a drawback for some.
And while Lib was completely unlikeable at the beginning, her character undergoes so much of development, and I thought that it was very well done. By the end, I CARED. I was so invested. And worried. Very worried for her. Which is a pretty big feat considering that this isn’t the longest of books.
But like I said, the book does NOT coddle you. There’s some very disturbing content, and while I am still getting over some of it, I appreciated it. And I look forward to reading more from Emma Donoghue in the near future....more
What the heck am I reading? Was his entire life up to that point a lie? Has my life been a lie? Is it To sum up my thoughts while reading this book:
What the heck am I reading? Was his entire life up to that point a lie? Has my life been a lie? Is it possible to be jealous of yourself? Is it possible to hate yourself? Why is nobody more freaked out? I should probably put this book down now because I have things to do and places to be. ...just one more chapter won’t hurt. This book is playing more mind games than The Mentalist. How is he still awake without coffee? THIS IS NOT SUPPOSED TO GET SAD. I still don’t know what the heck I’m reading. If I just spent 350 pages reading a dream sequence, I will demand a refund. These guys are multiplying faster than a calculator. Sci-fi mystery thriller is my new favourite genre mutation. THATS how it ended??? I have no clue what I just read but I liked it....more
This book is a twisted, messed up, insanely clever one that is not for the faint of heart. I don't know if I'm just....what the heck did I just read?
This book is a twisted, messed up, insanely clever one that is not for the faint of heart. I don't know if I'm just a big baby or if it's because I'm not huge on the crime-psychological-thriller-mystery genres, because it had me proper grimacing at some points. And considering the above mentioned facts as well as the fact that I didn't particularly like any of the characters apart from Nick's twin sister, IT STILL SOMEHOW MANAGED TO MAKE ME ENJOY IT....more
I found the mystery to be a little lackluster. I also am pleased to report that Charlotte still cannot pull of being a Holmes, I'm sorry. However, it I found the mystery to be a little lackluster. I shall also restrain myself from telling you to watch BBC's Sherlock...but watch BBC's Sherlock, it's brilliant....more
~ Jamie was a precious, somewhat naive marshmallow, whose narration I found highly enj3.5 stars.
The Good:
~ A Study in Charlotte was quick, fun read.
~ Jamie was a precious, somewhat naive marshmallow, whose narration I found highly enjoyable.
~ The writing flowed nicely, too, and I liked how well the fast pace worked for the book.
~ The numerous references to the original Sherlock Holmes stories.
~ The epilogue.
So, why 3.5 stars? The Bad:
~ This isn’t a huge issue, and I was aware of it going into the story, but the concept was a bit far-fetched and clichéd.
~ I found that the drug abuse and rape elements were not properly addressed. Especially by the adults.
~ The adults in general.
~ Charlotte is literally Sherlock Holmes. In a 16 year-old’s body. In a modern setting. THIS DOESN’T SEEM TO BE AN ISSUE FOR MOST PEOPLE, but I found her to generally be an unlikeale character.
~ The pages upon pages of monologue by the “evil mastermind”.
I’m curious to see where the next one goes, though!
P.S. if you loved this book, watch BBC’s Sherlock. It’s brilliant.
P.P.S. If you disliked this book, watch BBC’s Sherlock. It’s brilliant.
P.P.P.S. I’m having withdrawals from BBC’s Sherlock. It’s brilliant. ...more
