Returning to this series is like sitting down with old friends. I enjoy meeting up with Nikki, Joseph, Eve and the gang. The stories always include a smart mystery but also quite a bit of the interactions of everyone.
This time, there are two stylized murder scenes Someone is killing young goths in Greenborough and it is up to Nikki and her team to solve why. As ever the main characters, Nikki and Joseph, are very well developed and complex They make a well-matched couple, both in their private and their professional lives.
There’s also a side story as Eve and Wendy research a long dead painter who met a mysterious end and a missing painting. Of course, someone in the present is trying to stop this investigation. Might just have been me being inpatient, but this part of the book seemed quite drawn out, and spoiled the pace of the book to me, this time. Not had a problem with them in the previous books.
Whereas this is part of a well-developed series, you could fairly easily read this as a standalone. Although I do recommend reading the whole series.
Scoring this book is difficult. The main story is easily 4-5 stars, but the side story I can’t give more than 3 stars, so overall 4 stars.

Since then I have been checking lists of upcoming books in anticipation of a follow up. Could Ms McEvoy follow the first one? Yes she could, the writing is on a different level to most other writers. When I started to read this, I was instantly reminded of the brilliance of book one. I have to go back and read the first one soon, which is something I only do for very special books.
This can easily be read as a standalone, but I most strongly encourage you to read the first one as it is such a fantastic novel and this is a equally superb follow up.
I sincerely hope there is a third book, soon although writing of this standard can't be rushed!...more

The book was very readable and quite enjoyable, but it didn't quite have the wow factor to make it stand out from other similar books. It had a great start and a fantastic end that fooled me. But in between it just sort of plodded along with some sections, feeling a bit repetitive.
The story is told in two timelines, now and then, which works well in general. but the then element dragged a little, as I felt that the book was probably more relatable/enjoyable read for the female of the species. Don't shoot me now.
Overall, this was an easy read. I didn't really get engrossed in the story and most of the characters were not particularly likeable. But as I said earlier a great start and a fantastic ending so 4 stars....more

As a huge fan of John Ryders books, I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to read his latest offering. Unfortunately, this book was in 2 distinct sections. It starts off as being right up there with his usual work, but then about halfway through it almost falls over.
This was a slightly different character to Mr Ryders usual. An accountant who even though he was definitely not a fighter, managed to adapt to the situation and use what was around him. But the second part of the story dominated the story, but for me this was the least captivating section.
Scoring this is difficult, whereas the first half was around 6 / 5, the middle bit was 3 /5 end possibly heading for 4 /5. So overall I give it just about 4/ 5. But if I wasn’t such a fan of his previous work might have been a 3 /5....more

I had high hopes for this book the premise was enticing and sounded a bit spooky. Slightly different to some of the other books I have read and loved by this author. It starts off with a great prologue that really made me feel intrigued to read on. However it became a bit of a mundane supernatural thriller, albeit with few thrills.
Fortunately, this was a fairly easy read so didn’t take too much time to read, fairly simple and the basic plot was confusing. But I didn’t really relate to any of the character’s. Could do with a bit more detail in the back story of the main character. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ Overall not a bad book, but not a great one either. Will definitely read more by this author in her usual genre...more

Can’t believe this is book 13 in the series, it is fantastic to read how much Nikki has developed from book 1. She was a real loner, one-woman crime fighter, but now she has become a true team player. She is not the only one, all of the characters have been developed over the series.
To me this could be the best one so far, one of the most horrific. Not for the faint hearted. Very difficult to put down, the pace and twists , keep you hooked with the exceptionally strong, and balanced characters.
I highly recommend this book (and the whole series) to anyone who likes a strong police procedural series and is not too worried about reading some horrific murders....more

Book 19? In the Hilliary Greene Series, no longer a DI. Now working cold cases as a civilian. It has the usual format we have come to expect and love a simple crime but a detailed investigation. Another quick and easy book to read. That is well written and hooks you in from the start.
Already looking forward to the next installment...more

Robert Bryndza has done it again, in delivering yet another taut, fast paced mystery. He works his magic, once again, he knows just how to keep the plot tight without giving away too much. But dropping in a generous helping of red herrings. Former Detective Kate and her side kick Tristan have now set up a PI agency, thanks to a bequest left to Kate, in a will
They are asked to look into a cold case that the police have failed in solving for 12 years. The chapters are interspersed with the murderer’s viewpoint. Some people don,t like this tactic, but I love it. I had my suspicions, as to who was responsible but I was still wrong thanks to a great twist This is just an amazing mystery that will keep you engaged. It could be read as a standalone as the author gives away enough of a backstory to fill in the blanks, but no spoil the 1st 2 books, which I also highly recommend. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Now I was really looking forward to reading this as I have loved this series, having read 12 of the previous 14 books. The other 2 books are waiting to be read. But sadly, this one well short of his usual high standard.
Lincoln Rhymes is an unusual character and very different from other sleuths. Formerly a NYPD Homicide Detective who since an accident at a crime scene is now a a quadriplegic, but that doesn’t stop him working as Forensic Consultant. The other main character, Amelia Sachs a NYPD detective acts as his eyes as she walks crime scenes and much more. There are a growing number of other recurring characters, that work in the background.
This book starts quite well, and I was enjoying it, and enjoying getting re acquainted with the “cast”. But then I realised that my mind had wandered off somewhere and I had lost interest. I tried to pull it back, but no avail. There were points where I could have even just given up on it. I really struggled to connect with the characters and the plot was … shall I say not up to the usual standard.
Looking at the average score, I am probably in the minority. Wrong book at the wrong time? Maybe. I will read the other 2 books in the series and will try the next one. Hopefully a one-off slump!...more

I t has been probably less than 6 months since the last book, but it feels like an eternity. I have been obsessed with checking Netgalley almost daily since the cover reveal. And boy was it worth it.
Ms Marsons, has given us Kim Stone fanatics a totally different scenario this time. Where the perpetrator just walks into the police station. How would DI Stone tackle this scenario? Well you will have to read the book!!
As a default the story is packed from start to finish with, tension, suspense and surprising twists that you will not see coming. All wrapped up in short snappy chapters, that mean it’s impossible to put down.
This is very tricky to review without giving away key information. I find it amazing that each and every time she comes up with a unique and compulsive storyline and plot. All woven together around the familiar characters of her team as they are developed, in their personal and professional lives.
How can I wait till next May for book 16? Another must read....more

This is quite a good story, fairly well told. But it for me it didn't quite fit with the rest of the Ben Hope Series. Probably a good one if you want a synopsis of the story so far! As a large part of the book is a rehash/summary of who is who, what and why. Great if you are new, but if you are familiar with the books frustrating.
A topical story and maybe it was a problem doing his normal amount of research that resulted in this shadow of the usual standard. I will continue to read and look forward to the next instalment. ...more

I have read all of John Ryder’s previous books and his alter ego Graham Smith, so I knew I was in for a fast paced, thrilling roller coaster. I wasn’t disappointed. Mr Ryder starts with the action from page one and feed in information on the characters and plot, rather than bog you down with full backstories n all the main characters straight away. This works well and the new character Kyle Roche is very easy to like, although I wouldn’t try and annoy him. He has a persona that is probably a little too soft at times but can be ruthlessly efficient with his assessment and actions to get out of situations. I believe this is a standalone but should there be more books I would like to know more about his background.
I loved the ticking clock aspect, created by the author. It really increased the ace and meant this was a difficult book to put down. The pace of it, ensured that the was practically no down time, when you could say “I will break there”. You will not be going to bed when you want to or getting back from lunch on time!
A must-read, brilliant book. I really hope we see more of Kyle Roche, and his bag of plenty in a sequel soon....more

This is the latest case and probably his toughest so far for Eddie Flynn one-time con artist and now Defence lawyer, you want when everything is against you. And everything is against the defendant in this case. In small town Alabama, a young African American is framed for the murder of a young white girl, with DNA evidence, 2 confessions and a DA, and sheriff who will do anything to get the conviction and extend the DA’s record-breaking execution legacy. If that wasn’t enough there is a group of white supremacists led by The Pastor with a deadly agenda.
As you may have guessed it has elements that draw parallels between the 1930s Alabama depicted in To Kill a Mockingbird, and modern America. The District Attorney Randal Korn doesn’t care if the defendant is innocent or guilty, he goes for the death penalty in every case. With no moral scruples as to how he gets there.
Another fantastic addition to the series. As always Eddie Flynn stories are fast paced, full of tension, thrills, suspense and twists. Even Eddie himself doubts he can come out of this one ahead, or even alive at times. But the principles he lives by will not let him give up. Highly recommended whether you are new to this series or are a long-standing fan. Just don’t plan to go anywhere until you have finished it....more

I usually prefer my mysteries to be gritty and less cosy, but I can always make an exception for this series. Set in Bermuda, it does at least let you indulge in a pseudo holiday, soaking up the rays and atmosphere. Although I do hope there are fewer (dead) bodies on the beach when I do get away. A fantastic second book to follow the superb first book. With continued character development, of the regular characters, as various relationships form. The author writes in a way that draws you in and makes you feel part of the story. I loved it. Book 3 please. I was really drawn into the story and it moves at a reasonable pace.

Kill a spy is the third part of the trilogy. which follows Neva, a female assassin, a ruthless cold assassin, with no past, who goes rogue against her own organisation who trained her to kill anybody, no questions asked. The other main character is Michael, a loner with his own issues, who works for Archive a highly secretive part of MI5. Can’t expand on either of them too much without spoiling book one and two.
Each chapter is once again told by a different character, this works well in moving the story along at quite a pace. Each chapter helps to both answer some of the questions raised, but at the same time makes you want more information.
Since I first started this trilogy I have been gripped by its premise, non-stop action, underlying spying and counter spying. This book seamlessly fills in the background stories created earlier, which is great to see if you were right about certain people. I will say that the the death toll in this one seems to be higher and more graphic than the first 2 books.
I strongly recommend reading all 3, preferably in one binge read, as lack of a recap between books has been the one downside. Although it may have detracted from the pace. This has been the best spy series ever, if I have a complaint, it is that although almost all the loose ends wer tied up, I am left wanting more. I will miss these characters. A really big thank you to Samantha Lee Howe, I shall be looking forward to reading more of her stories....more
