it gave me FINLAY DONOVAN IS KILLING IT (series) meets CRAWDADS vibes. enter: a murder mystery with quirky characters and comedic banter in a swamp.
the beginning was great, it started off nice and with action. looooved Lana, she was the best. the family dynamics were entertaining and adorable at times. the murder mystery became a bit of a stretch…
the last 70ish pages is where i was checked out—it was tough to finish and just felt like the resolution drug out a bit. there also wasn’t a “plot twist” for me so i was craving that given its a suspense.
BUT, i’m picky with “thrillers.” go in expecting a family drama with a side of mystery and use it for a quick page turner book and it’ll do the trick! ...more

TAKE IT BACK remains my fave from this author—it was a 5 star read for me and one of my fave thrillers of 2020!
this was a good blend of a neighborhood suspense, family/moral drama and a procedural thriller. i expected a bit more “thriller” than we got, so i recommend adjusting expectations for a mystery / suspense with lots of drama and that should help! neighborhood thrillers are my fave trope, so i’m also a bit tougher on those books than most since i’ve read so many.
so many characters were unlikeable and it this book really makes you think “what would i do if that happened to me?” keeping as spoiler free as i can, but it’s definitely a moral compass type of book ...more

this was reali devoured this book! so happy to be reading more from Sarah Pekkanen again—the co-author of THE WIFE BETWEEN US and AN ANONYMOUS GIRLS.
this was really captivating and i loved the dual POVs. the moms was my favorite. there were so many good themes in this one about family and survival and womanhood. it is not a “thriller” though—definitely more of a suspense with lots of family drama.
it starts off super interesting and kept my attention the entire time, i was very invested to figure out how it would end and how each timeline would overlap in the present and finished it in two sittings.
despite the 4 stars, this is one of the better thrillers i’ve read this summer. it brought me out of a book rut which was a god send lol!
there were a few things that i would change to make it a 5 star. one is a big thing but would be a spoiler so i’ll omit that from my review. the others were minimal. i did want the ending to be a biiiit more open ended bc i personally don’t love when thrillers wrap up really nicely but there was a slightly sinister allusion at the end which i enjoyed.
all in all—i definitely enjoyed this and reco to others! excited to see what else Pekkanen whips up on her own :)

3-3.5 stars. i binged this on audio today during a long roadtrip. while it was fun to be back in CoHo’s world, this one was just okay compared to some3-3.5 stars. i binged this on audio today during a long roadtrip. while it was fun to be back in CoHo’s world, this one was just okay compared to some of my faves of hers (enter: NOV 9, VERITY, IEWU, HOPELESS, etc). however, CoHo is still the absolute queen of bingeworthy books. no one writes like her—she grabs you right away and has such unique plots (and character names lol!) and just knows how to hook ya fast.
my main issue with this books is that there was just simply WAY too much going on. it’s also much more of a family drama / coming of age / forgiveness vs. romance. i’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews for this one and i can totally see why. it wasn’t bad by any means (i always think people who rate CoHo books 1 star need a hug… lol iykyk) but it’s not one of her best for me! for reference, i’ve read all of her books but 1, so unfortunately the comparison game is bound to happen.
i will also say that there really aren’t any likable characters in this book… and there are a lot of them. but i suppose that’s also the beauty in part of this story and a major theme—no one is perfect, everyone is going through some shit and we all deserve forgiveness.
TLDR; lots going on, more of a family drama, somewhat of a wild ride and as always, a quick read!
