Unfortunately it ended up being just another thriller with an 'emotionally damaged' heroine who consistently makes stupid decisions instead of logical ones, follows the obvious red herring instead of the obvious villain, yet solves the mystery in the end for no reason other than the author writing it that way. I have no idea why this book is rated so high when there is a million others out there exactly the same....more

ThThe Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon was deeply layered with King's personal aesthetic, as in his name didn't need to be on the cover to know he wrote it. The whole thing felt like returning to an old friend. Tricia was a great protagonist. Young but bright, and ice water flowing in her veins. It was difficult in the beginning to understand some of her choices. Doesn't everyone know the first rule of being truly lost in the woods is stop walking and wait for rescue? Tricia does not know this. I had to keep reminding myself of her age at these times, though she certainly seemed older than nine other times. Overall it was very enjoyable....more

After reading a series of disappointing books with cookie cutter plots and bland characters, Maeve Fly felt like a breath of fresh air. The writing flowed easily and naturally. At no point did it feel forced or contrived. The book was on the shorter side and I could have done with a little longer story, but we get what we get and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved Maeve with all her strengths and faults. She was a vividly imagined character, as were many of those surrounding her. The only thing that kept me from giving this book five stars was that I hated the love interest and the storyline surrounding him. Simply because I think Maeve deserved better than a mundane romance plot. (view spoiler)[The whole beginning is about how no one ever needs a motive when a man does monstrous things but always asks 'why' when a woman does. Which is 100% true. So why then did the author give us an unconventional female protagonist before instantly turning around and throwing her in a relationship....which is as boringly stereotypical as it comes with female characters. (hide spoiler)] Hopefully we will get another story with Maeve but with no romance at all. Because all forms of media and storytelling need to start understanding that not every female protagonist needs a damn love interest. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine that is clearly growing into annoyance. Anyway!!!!! I really enjoyed this book and will definitely read whatever the author writes next....more

Voices in the Snow isnThis book was deeply disappointing, especially after reading such Darcy Coates stories as Carrow Haunt, From Below, and Hunted. Voices in the Snow isn't even horror. It's a romance. And a poorly written romance at that. It honestly felt like Stephanie Meyer wrote 90% of this book with the bland damsel in distress and the angsty man who only cares about the damsel's safety. Seriously! He literally locks her in a room against her will to ensure her safety, and even worse, when she escapes and finds him she APPOLIZES to him instead of the other way around. WTF?! What am I reading?? What year was this written? I'll tell you what year! 2020! Again, I say WTF? The other 10% of this ridiculous novel was actually a proper apocalyptic horror. The "end times" idea was interesting and unique, and the corresponding creatures were creepy. The book had all the makings of a great horror but, unfortunately, it only lasted a few pages before reverting right back to the terrible YA romance....more
