I listened to the audio and it was well done, although I'm probably not the right audience. This wasn't scary, but too graphic/gory-ish for my taste. I enjoyed the characters though and wanted to see how the Evan's women dealt with the "new arrivals" coming to their funeral parlor.
I also enjoyed the small town Texas setting. People are disappearing and Deputy Roger Taylor has suspicions and starts asking a lot of questions. Secrets, Strigoi (vampire-ish people), and fighting the un-dead made this one a rather strange and at times cringy read!
Thanks to NetGalley for my arc. This one is OUT as of April 9, 2024...more

Don't worry about a slow beginning, it takes off full force from page one. Parts took my breath away and my hands were always solidly glued to my kindle.
It is on the darker side of my usual reads with some blood chilling scenes. I had the urge to scream "run!" several times, feeling anxiety. I was somehow in the game too, second guessing and trying to connect dots! Brain cells fully engaged.
I liked the way the author weaved the two settings together, not giving too much away, laying the puzzle pieces and letting the reader work them out. I was wondering where the dominoes would fall, who would make the first misstep.
Someone's unhinged, going down rabbit holes, taking risks they shouldn't. The cat and mouse both making choices, mistakes and creating panic around them.
Recommend if you enjoy crime / police procedural thrillers with some stalker vibes!

A new detective series from a bestselling author (my first by him).
I knew I wanted to give it a try, but after pretty good start, it ended up in the lackluster pile.
The detective, Declan Miller, was likeable enough, but his humor got cheesy after a while. He is assigned to a new murder case while he is still recovering from the death of his wife (unsolved).
The mystery was middle of the road, but I did like the reveal of the killer. The wife's murder is unresolved though.
I'll wait to decide if I'll give book two a chance.

It would be a nightmare to have your identity stolen and all the complications that follow are just awful as well.
I loved Morgan and her resilience and authenticity. I became invested in her journey early in the novel and grew to care about her and enjoyed all the little life updates that she experienced. The small things like working as a bartender in a resort with hopes of owning her own place one day, learning to cook, reconnecting with family, and sharing her hopes and dreams.
Things go sideways early on when a cold-blooded man crosses her path and creates chaos. Serial killer on the loose!! This made the book a perfect blend of fluff and suspense.
All the love with some chills.....
The great characterization and flow of the story held my attention throughout. I can see why she is such a popular author. The last chapters were unputdownable with intense action and a satisfying ending.
I'd love this to be a series so I could follow along......
It was a bit long at 437 pages, so I opted to listen (15 hours/4 min) at 1.5 speed. The narrator, January LaVoy was 5 star spectacular...more

Vera was such a great character. She was determined to solve the crime that took place in her tea shop and goes all out in her investigations. She gives herself pep talks and seems to seek out all the drama. She even keeps her own little murder notebook. She is a bit of a bother to Officer Gray who calls her CSI educated and wishes she would go away let her handle the case!
Vera was described as an elderly, frail "old lady" , but I thought she was energetic and lively!
This one is on the lighter/cozy side, but beware there is a bit of swearing if that bothers you (not squeaky clean).
I was anxious to learn who the killer was and who would solve the case, but the journey and following Vera along the way is what kept me reading! The tea shop setting was also a plus.

I feel like I've been on an adventure! Traveling from Withernsea, England in 1943 to New York 2023!
Lily Baines is only twenty two, a petty officer in the Women's Royal Naval Service (the Wrens). She intercepts live radio communications sent to enemy vessels that hunted their own.
"She knew what she heard"
Matt Jackson, a young US officer is hearing a crackle of static on his radio. He hears the "downton abbey voice" and the stakes are high.
A short story/listen ~ it has great narration, some "action" feels, emotion and intrigue. Recommend if you love special connections, Bletchley Park and code breakers history.

She wonders if it is "another run-of-the-mill thriller."
Let's just say it is not!
She soon realizes that her life will change forever.
She is a journalist and this gifted book titled, Falling, will send her to Cornwall, chasing answers. You see, the author was murdered, just like the character in the book. Alex has a sense that something isn't right.
I was wrapped up in the mystery as well as the book within the book. A fascinating premise, with a quick pace and eerie setting. The ending went in a different direction than I thought it was heading. A bit too far from the cliff (no I didn't like it), but still a compelling read! I've read my share of "cliff" books this year and this one kept me reading.

I've read the whole series and this one was even more fun beca4.5 STARS Hawthorne and Horowitz Mystery #4
Another fun metafiction mystery that I adored!
I've read the whole series and this one was even more fun because the mystery actually involves Horowitz as a suspect! We also learn a bit more about the secretive and cryptic Hawthorne. Whenever he is asked something personal, his go-to is always "I'm a detective. What else do you need to know?"
These two are in a bit of a dispute over another book deal. "I’m sorry, Hawthorne. But the answer’s no. Our deal is over."
It is opening night for Horowitz' new play, Mindgame. A popular critic named Harriet Throsby writes a scathing review full of vitriole.
"It's critics who kill writers, never the other way round." Poor Horowitz seems to be digging his own grave! Will Hawthorne rescue him or hang him out to dry?
The sarcasm and humor we expect from these two is on point, the mystery is clever and suspenseful. It kept my mind spinning throughout, a bit hard to follow at times (just stay the course and pay attention), but never boring. Throw in an old dagger, fingerprints, dna, CCTV images, a Japanese blossom and a bumbling detective and have fun solving the Christie-esque murder!
I read/listened and loved it! Narrated by: Rory Kinnear, who is a favorite of mine. 8 hrs/ 31 min , released 11-15-2022
This series is best read in order to fully enjoy the relationships and timeline for Horowitz and Hawthorne.

I SWITCHED TO THE EBOOK!
The synopsis describes this as "an enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy––with a cozy mystery twist!" I was ready for a change of genre and fell in love with the adorable cover, so took a chance and loved it!
Great palate cleanser with a cute, sweeter than sweet cast of characters. Elle is so energetic and determined to make lemonade out of the lemons that fall her way. I loved the way she cared for her friend Joyce. It added some emotional backbone to her character. You'll either love it or hate it! I have book #2, so I'm game.

The duo Horowitz and Hawthorne are back at it!
They take a trip to an idyllic island off the south coast of England. The island is remote and tiny. Things go sideways and they find themselves trapped with a killer!
Engaging, fun banter between Horowitz and Hawthorne, double deception, locked room mystery, multiple suspects that all have a motive, and someone with murder in their eyes.
A blast to follow the clues and signposting on this island journey! Narration is great, but when he switches voices, I had to giggle. He sounds so squeaky/nasally, but it works!
