I have some from the seventies about Elton John and Bernie Taupin. This British book has great photos and lists Elton’s albums in a really picturesque manner. Listing the albums is really important because that’s the way we saw music during his heyday. Albums were the most important and we analyzed how they were put together and the total quality of the music in them. This book is joyful on the way the biography Rocketman is not. It brings in the story of his professional life as well as his personal life. I loved this book and it brought back great memories. I highly recommend it for Elton John fans....more

Eric Idle does start out a bit stiff but it quickly dissipates as he gets going into his teen years and college. It just keeps getting better and better. Funny account of sitting at the Tonys and watching Spamalot lose almost all awards but finally winning the big one. Accounts of the lives of Carrie Fisher, Graham Chapman, David Bowie and especially George Harrison. Robin Williams too +. I’m so glad I listened to the audiobook but probably the book in the future. ...more

It doesn’t reveal anything new, nor does it shock or surprise. But it is well thought out and well written plea to stop Trump and restore democracy before it ends forever. The author also provides an example of the Athens democracy died when a demagogue politician made a speech urging Athens to take revenge on an ally who had defected to Sparta by killing the men and enslaving the women and children. Ultimately Athens citizens split the vote 50/50. The side that wanted peace eventually won but the populace who wanted violence became a powerful force in Athenian politics. The author points out 16 years later, Aristotle was forced to commit suicide by this violent faction as they continually degraded society. A very good example on how Trump and before, the GOP Congress, Tea Party and other increasingly right wing groups. I doubt that this author will be able to effect change with this book, I thought it was one of the best written about the Trump Administration. ...more

All female accounts from across the world telling readers about their plight. Some are resettled in new countries, some are still in refugee camps. One woman is an American who talks about resetting refugees. I was shocked most by her story because it is the position I am in. She describes putting them in a house that clearly wouldn’t pass building codes and would be barred from habitation. The refugee resettlement organization found this house, clearly a violation of ousting codes. The girl also describes a school that barred students from entering at 18. You can admit up to 21. And the American mother mentions an English “tutor” not a certified ESOL teacher. Huh? Seems like there are some laws that need to be enforced in PA. ...more

It is about the history of the East India Company, a British corporation that in order to make a profit for its shareholders, systematically destroyed an empire during the late 18h century. It used superior technology and their own military to conquer and destroy the Mughal Empire. Often ruining the food supply, destroying cities and causing the deaths of thousands of people to take control. Creating slaves and workers for the soul drive of profit for the company. People were often starved into submission, selling their children into slavery and forced to eat animals and grain they needed to create next years crop. The British parliament did raise enormous concerns once but the money poured into parliament from the company to silence and destroy concerned MPs. As I see my nation systematically destroyed by corporate greed, I wonder what will become of the people who live now. India suffered a few hundred years before finding freedom. This is an important book and well researched. I highly recommend it. ...more

This is a fictional story about an educated concubine and a map maker serving the sultan of Granada as the Spanish empire is created and the moors are being driven out of Europe. The inquisition is coming to pass and the moor are in terrible danger. Using a jinn and telling fantasy stories of an ancient bird king, they try to survive the terrible attack that is coming from the Spanish and is about to envelope them all. I had a passing interest in the story but wasn’t involved in it. Still it was great to see a Muslim writer come out with some interesting fiction in English. I’m sure my friends will love it. ...more

His parents are Ewe from Ghana and immigrated to Great Britain. He looks at how human beings identify themselves by identity starting with himself. Do his family identify as Ewe first? Who are the other people who were around them in Ghana. Do they identify as Ghanaian? As British? Does he identify as British? Do others accept him as a British man? This is a interesting look at identity. Is very much like a lecture at a university but he is a professor. An interesting look. ...more

Issac tells of a troubled childhood in an insular group of Syrian Jews who dint accept his effeminate and flamboyant behavior. The religious school he attends is conservative and the rabbi critical of him at every turn. For high school he finally talks his mother into allowing him to attend the public performing arts school in NYC. He loves it there but the subway rides ate dangerous and upsetting. His father works in the garment district and hanging out there until his father gets off work in the evening so Issac doesn’t have to take the subway turns out to be a future career move. He learns the fashion business eat gets jobs after school, eventually turning it into his own business. His mother and father support this but he has to hide his homosexuality from them. Then the book takes a turn. The story of himself as a successful designer turns into a name dropping trope. It bored me and I was disappointed. The book needs a insert of photographs so I can get a better idea of his work. This is missing. Unfortunately it hurts the book. ...more

He muses on its history and present in a steam of consciousness form. I found snatches of the book interesting. Especially the take of Chang and Eng, the Siamese twins. I was unaware that PT Barnum was the man who created the theatrical tradition on Broadway. It was interest to read about Robert Moses and his hand in NYC. Unfortunately the rest is too obscure and clear to make much sense. Broadway in the 80s was still a backwater day f sex shops and the poor. The homeless began moving in as Reagan released a large number of institutional patients and left them on the street. Overall, a disappointing book. ...more
