I really wanted to share this with my students because I had read Scott Kelley's adult autobiography and was interested in how he described his life as a student in K-12 school and at the beginning of higher education. He was disinterested and barely passed. It was only until finding the book, The Right Stuff that he found what he decided to do and had to find out how to do it. That involved getting good grades and taking school work seriously. A very good story for students to hear about. ...more

Fantastic book about the Big Dipper and star constellations. I was fooled because the library book I received looked old and therefore out of date. ItFantastic book about the Big Dipper and star constellations. I was fooled because the library book I received looked old and therefore out of date. It isn’t. In fact I’d say this book might be better than more recent books. It talks about the history of the Big Dipper and Polaris and how different cultures were used over the years. That the North Star wasn’t always in the same position and will change in the future is pretty interesting and the information in the book is new to me and absorbing. I had no idea that the staff that is often held in Egyptian priests hands mirrors the dipper and is intended to help the dead find their way int the underworld. Great facts. Love this book. ...more

I used it for a third grade summer school class on chocolate as a research project. To review the topic I used the photos and adapted the text to make it interesting to the kids. My Latino and African kids were quite proud that cacao is grown in their part of the world. A video I showed them the day before on making chocolate became more comprehensible with the book. Overall it was helpful. We also discussed mole sauce and the original taste of cocoa which is bitter. ...more
This is a children's picture book about Ham, the first chimpanzee in space. I read this book to a group of third graders after giving a brief overview on space words and concepts that they know and what is important about this summer - It is the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 landing astronauts on the moon. They were very excited. Ham was a chimpanzee that was sent into space for 20 minutes and came back to Earth. Phew! Even the kids waited with baited breath to see if he came back alive. The book also covers Ham's life afterwards which isn't so pretty but no horrible. He was kept in a small cage at the Washington DC zoo also for years, to see how space had affected him. It turned out that the way he was treated and his solitary life was detrimental to his existence and he was placed in a chimpanzee sanctuary for his last years. The kids loved every second of this book. ...more
