Nonetheless, it is a valuable book. It is a historical review that looks at the legend of Saint Nicholas and compares it to research about the era and locale where he lived. It is about a reality show that is searching for the “official” Santa among the many that are found around the Christmas Season. Like all of Guinn’s books in this series it explores the history of a Christmas tradition, in this case how Santa’s began appearing in stores and malls. It is a series of meditations about Christmas that I wish I had spread out over the month before Christmas. The book's theology is based on evangelical tradition, and I am not an evangelical, but I still found it very fulfilling....more

This is a book that I read around Christmas every couple of years. It deals with both the history of the legends surrounding Saint Nicholas, as well aThis is a book that I read around Christmas every couple of years. It deals with both the history of the legends surrounding Saint Nicholas, as well as the spirit of gift giving. I find it a very touching and uplifting story. Many people have asked me, over the years since I started carving, why I don't sell my carvings. There is great joy in giving a gift, watching the the expression on the face of the person who recieves it. One of the lessons that I may take from this book is that Santa eventually begins to sell some of his woodcarvings (yes he was a woodcarver) to finance his gift giving. In the next few years, when I retire I may try to follow that practice....more
