It hits very differently now that I'm in my mid-40s, married with kids. Still amazing and compelling and quite a bit sadder than I remember.
It's also worth noting that the HBO show, though cancelled after only telling half the story, is a phenomenal adaptation that may actually improve on the book. Watching it is what made me finally read it again and I'm glad I did....more

Hopefully it will be released as part of a future Kickstarter, because it really is quite good for such an early novel, and while it doesn't read like the Sanderson writing we know, there are definitely elements of his style already visible. The twists and reveals that piled up in the last 10% of the book are an undeniable early example of the Sanderlanche, and it's done quite effectively.

More than anything I appreciate how much humor is perfectly scattered throughout these stories without detracting at all from the mostly serious tone. I lost count of how many times I laughed out loud.
I also enjoyed the many references to the upcoming First Empire series. It's clear this was a perfect opportunity to lead into that series since it's mostly written and about to be published.
And Michael, since I know you read these reviews, please do keep writing these stories, and I'll keep pre-ordering them....more

Although this one started off a bit slower, due to a bit of jumping forward in time from the previous books, by the end I was transfixed, as usual. Thankful that the last two books of the series are coming even more quickly than the previous ones, and that this whole series will be out in the next year or so.
If you haven't already started reading these, it's time to rectify that!...more

The characters and story did nothing for me so far, and I've got way too many books on my shelves waiting to be read to keep reading a book that hasn't grabbed me in the first quarter.
Always makes me sad to do this because it seems to get a lot of praise and I wonder what I'm missing, but then, never once have I slogged through a book I wasn't enjoying only to enjoy it in the end, so I'm gonna stop doing that....more
