Lizbeth Borden and crew to the rescue again, this time in 1921 Georgia.
30 years later and Lizzie Bordon is an old cat lady. I admit I was bummed aboutLizbeth Borden and crew to the rescue again, this time in 1921 Georgia.
30 years later and Lizzie Bordon is an old cat lady. I admit I was bummed about this because it meant my time with her would be shorter than I hoped. But she still has her clever mind and her axe. She is also on the vigilant look out for more Lovecraftian Old Ones apocalyptic mischief, and finds it in Georgia.
Chaplewood is a creepy old estate that has become an even creepier old church. Mysteries abound. ...more
I love Cherie Priest. Her Eden Moore series is a big favorite of mine. Her clockwork stuff with zombies is more hit and miss for me. Loved Boneshaker I love Cherie Priest. Her Eden Moore series is a big favorite of mine. Her clockwork stuff with zombies is more hit and miss for me. Loved Boneshaker and kinda hated Dreadnaught and admittedly have not gone after the rest of the series (though I mean to).
What if Lizzie Borden HAD to kill her parents?
What if some Lovecraftian Old Ones began to start some apocalyptic mischief, and Lizzie Bordon and her axe would be coming in handy?
The story is told through letters and journals, as if Cherie Priest was digging around and found some undiscovered box full of letters and journals that tell this story. I dug it.
Dark, creepy, fishy – exactly what you would expect from a Lovecraft style novel. ...more
Was in my GR recommendations pile and thought it sounded kinda fun, and it was. First in the series, so obvious introduction to characters and world. Peter’s a policeman who can speak to ghosts, and ends up beginning his training as a wizard for the department that handles the unusual bump in the night cases.
Dry humor, magic, supernatural stuff, set in modern day England. It’s all good.
I don’t mean to sound so ho-hum. It’s a perfectly good book. But, after finishing the Hallows series with my beloved Rachel Morgan, and being a huge fan of Harry Dresden, it’s going to be tough for me to go nuts for a new supernatural crime solving urban fantasy. But if you, like me, have a Rachel hole to fill, or some free time while you wait for the next Dresden book, this is a fine way to entertain yourself.
Magic – spells in Latin (forma), that take practice to learn the basics, then can build up to bigger stuff.
Characters – good start, no Scooby gang yet, but it’s coming

He is above Gandalf and Dumbledore and Rachel Morgan and even Harry Dresden, whom I have loved for far longer.
He is not a good man, but he is such a great character. Full of darkness and desire, sarcasm and sadness.
I laughed out loud. I snickered, snorted, and giggled like the fool minion I am. And the last 30 pages, I sobbed in a steaming heap of snot and tears. Tried to summarize for someone a day later and still lost all my words to tears. I really loved it that much. Have no idea how to jump into another book right now.
Magic – Some sorcery, maybe some 21st century physics, some mutant powers Creatures – Necromancers, mutants, reanimated dead, trolls Cool places – It’s Europe 1000 years after nuclear apocalypse, it’s all kinda cool Characters – Wonderful…even the bad ones…and, even the ones on the Get Dead list Action – final battle is dozens, but the scale (fate of the world) is huge. Fair amount of small fights and skirmishes. ...more
If Locke Lamora, Tyrion Lannister and Monza Mercatto (Best Served Cold)LOVED IT! Halfway through second book now.
Dark, sarcastic and brutally violent.
If Locke Lamora, Tyrion Lannister and Monza Mercatto (Best Served Cold) had a baby, I think it would be Jorg. He loves thieving for the sure wickedness of it. He's the smartest guy in the room, and a military genius. He's also not a good guy. Perhaps he could have been, once, when he was a boy - when he was a prince. Now he is the 14-year old leader of a motley crew of terrifying mercenaries, and he wants a crown.
The crown he should have inherited is no longer available, but Jorg doesn't really find that to be a problem.
Characters - Fabulous. Horrible, but fabulous. Magic - More like sorcery, but a bit Creatures - Necromancers, mutants, sorcerers. No critters really. Cool Places - This is post-apocalyptic Europe, it's kinda all cool - that is if you like ruins (which I do) Action - Fine. It's first-in-a-trilogy level. Final battle is a couple dozen against a couple hundred....more
