This is such a heartwarming and utterly delightful feel-good romance, and I savored and loved every word of it! It’s basically a historical romance remake of the movie Pretty Woman except the heroine is a feisty French ballerina in need of money instead of a prostitute.
I couldn’t get enough of the witty banter and explosive chemistry between outwardly cold-hearted, aloof Lysander and spirited, outspoken Neve. Their romance was absolutely swoon-worthy! I also loved the secondary characters, Lysander’s spinster aunt and the group of friends that take Neve under their wing. I hope we get romances for the other women in the Taming of the Dukes club.
I listened to the audiobook, and Mary Jane Wells’s narration is fabulous and truly brought the book to life. She does such a wonderful French accent for Neve and gives all the characters distinct voices. I truly loved listening to this one.
This was me every single word and every single minute of this book! *dreamy sigh* Big 5 stars!
This book is a trainwreck. I know there are KA fans that will probably like it or love it, but honestl2 stars - Contemporary Romance/Romantic Suspense
This book is a trainwreck. I know there are KA fans that will probably like it or love it, but honestly, it’s a hot mess. KA’s rambling writing style is in full effect here. I’m honestly shocked the story made it past editors and beta readers without someone (or several) being honest and telling her it needed some serious editing and revamping. I gave it 2 stars mainly because it was such a crazy train that I had to stay aboard to see what happened next.
Here are some of the unbelievable plot points and issues that I had with the book. (view spoiler)[
*The hero and heroine are both in their 50’s, and they’re both gorgeous, successful, and rich and experience some serious instalust/instalove. They both have wonderful, well-adjusted, very attractive, successful children (she has two grown daughters and he has two grown sons and a teenage daughter), and their families blend together quickly and seamlessly. Where are people like this in real life?
*The heroine, Delphine, is a famous actress and author with a crazed stalker fan, which is why she moves to Misted Pines in the first place. Her stalker has kidnapped two women and is raping and torturing them to try to force her to marry him, so she has a personal security team. It’s resolved relatively quickly in the story and then gets brushed aside for new craziness and drama to develop.
*The hero, Cade, doesn’t seem to have that many speaking parts in the book. Or maybe it’s just that the heroine talks so damn much internally that it drowned him out? I wanted a lot more from his character. He should’ve been an awesome, memorable hero, especially given his past as a Green Beret and famous FBI profiler, but he fell kind of flat.
*People do not think or have conversations the way KA writes them.
*It felt like a chick-lit book at times with way too much time spent on mundane details about the heroine’s house and remodel, the hero’s house, and the town.
*Too many characters to keep up with and way too much detail and time spent on insignificant things and not enough development on the plot points and parts of the story that matter.
*Misted Pines is a quiet, peaceful small town, yet somehow there is a significant group of men living there with a penchant for getting fucked in the ass and it becomes a relevant part of the story. *eyeroll*
*There’s a vengeful ex-wives club made up of some of the women who have been cheated on by the men who like getting fucked in the ass. *eyeroll*
*The murderer turns out to be a guy who thinks he’s a fuck god and smarter than a renowned FBI profiler. And yes, it's as ridiculous as it sounds. (hide spoiler)]
I keep reading KA hoping I'll be wowed again, but maybe I've changed as a reader because her writing style just doesn't seem to work for me anymore....more
