This book is incredibly rushed and feels almost nothing like the previous two books. And characters we grew to love in the previous books are also absent?? With no explanation at all??? The new villain is boring and generic. I could really care less about that whole storyline. This was a horribly disappointing ending to a series that had so much potential. Two stars because I liked some of the world-building and introduction of a new culture and the wlw romance (even though it was also very, very rushed). ...more

I wasn't sure if I was going to continue with this series until the last 50-100 or so pages of this book when things finally got interesting (hence the 3.5 instead of the 2 I initially planned). Chakroborty's writing is beautiful but I was mostly bored with the plot after the first half of the book. I'm hoping the second book has much better pacing and is not just people traveling through the desert or running around the city for pages and pages....more

The pacing was all over the place and I felt little connection to any of the characters (view spoiler)[I still don't know who the fuck Dane and Liim are. They served no purpose and nothing would have changed by removing them (hide spoiler)]. The writing also seemed less mature and at times I wondered if I was reading poorly written fanfiction. I still give this 2/2.5 stars because overall it's an interesting story with characters with a lot of potential. I just felt it could have been done better. ...more

The writing is amazing and I loved the new, unique magic system. 4/4.5 stars because I didn't love the footnotes for the most part. I liked when they referenced funny/interesting in-universe events or history, but other times it just seemed like unnecessary info-dumping. I also think it took a while for the story to really get going. (view spoiler)[ I definitely struggled to get through the early Oxford chapters with Playfair going on and on about language and translation (hide spoiler)]
I enjoyed the characters (especially Ramy), but I found myself wanting more from the main three (Ramy, Victoire, Letty). They all felt a little flat. Like they were there for diversity and to be mouthpieces for certain thoughts and opinions. ...more
