I hope that the final product will be spiral bound. I have learned from other crochet titles that constantly flipping to the basic body/head shape pages quickly destroys the binding on traditional paperbacks. I do feel like every crochet critter book these days, features the same 20 animals in every book. How about, I dunno..... a pigeon? a turtle? Something other than lion, dinosaur, unicorn, bear, etc. They are fine, but I'd be more interested in something more unique.
The QR codes for tricky bits is a nice touch as is the final section that shows you little bits and bobs you can add to really make the pattern your own.
Overall, good. Can't say it would be great for true beginners, but a good building block.

I generally do not care for books in verse. However, I love Lisa Fipps. This book made me tear up so often I had to walk away from it a few times. LisaI generally do not care for books in verse. However, I love Lisa Fipps. This book made me tear up so often I had to walk away from it a few times. Lisa has such a knack for writing earnest, strong kids that learn to thrive despite having challenging (to say the least) families. The parallel with superheroes was *chef's kiss* not overwrought but just enough for middle grade readers to grasp. It is so important to put todays readers in other peoples shoes. Everyone could use more empathy these days.

Everett was hilarious, but never really cared for any of the other characters. I keep waiting for some other twist to develop and it really didn't. Adler's first book was absolutely charming and I was hoping this would be more of the same, instead this one is very Hallmark movie-esque. Everything was too convenient and twee. Could have trimmed about 150 pages and gotten the same story. Very mild spice didn't happen until the last quarter of the book.

Love. Love. Love. I could not love this book any more than I do. And I am not just saying that as a Librarian from northern Michigan.

I love all of the quirky townspeople. I love the Nick Miller-esque Miles. I love the realistic family trauma representation. I love the celebration of found family. I love that Michigan itself was character. (but also perhaps make MI look a little boring, so the fudgies don't completely take it over) I love the visibility of how much work actually goes into library events.
I highlighted so many passages in this book and I never highlight anything, like ever. This is my 2024 book....more

The cute cover and fun title sucked me in, but are wasted. The snippets from Frederick’s pov were the best part. Perhaps a dual narrative could have helped?
Also, the awkward in your face set up for a companion book was unnecessary.
(Also no elite private school would ever hire a random person without teaching experience, education, or a license. That was so eye-roll worthy. Same for working in a public library.)
