Guest List is more of a drama with some mysterious elements than a psychological thriller. Don’t go into this story expecting a lot of twists and turns. In fact, I was able to predict and guess all of the mysteries in the book.
But it does have a lot of great story elements that kept me reading and enjoying the story even if it was fairly predictable.
It’s set on an island, one of my bookish buzzwords! And on an island of the cost of Ireland…even better!! The story is about a couple who is about to get married and follows what happens the night before the wedding and the day itself.
I also love stories with multiple POVs in a mystery or thriller and we get around 6-7 POVs in The Guest List. The multiple POVs always makes the story more interesting and harder to guess. But as in the case with many stories with multiple POVS, a few of the POVS felt weaker and more underdeveloped than the rest.
Since each of characters held secrets, not all of the backstories and motivations of each character were as well developed as they should have been. I think the story would have benefited from either being a little longer and the various plot threads more fleshed out, or cutting out a few of the more minor subplots.
I enjoyed The Guest List more than I did Foley’s previous book,The Hunting Party, though, so I can see her growth as a writer and think she’s a talent to watch.
