There were parts that I enjoyed- the heart warming parts about supporting her friends, funny bits about texting from a friend’s phone, and her breakthrough in her mid-late 20s - but most was about the crazy escapades of a sex crazed young woman who partied very hard. The stories cover her teens through turning 30 and I am well beyond that, lol. I think younger people would enjoy this more than me. I give this 2.5 out of 5....more

Somethings I had not considered before, and others were refreshers of things I have read or heard elsewhere. The author does not offer financial advice. Worth the read if you are wanting to better understand your own decision making. ...more

I am absolutely flabbergasted by how resilient, resourceful, courageous these men were! Shackleton’s leadership and decision making was impressive! The fact that all 28 men survived living on ice floes in the Wedell Sea, managing to sail and camp on a remote island, and for 5 to head cross the Drake Passage to South Georgia Island in a lifeboat is so incredible! In all, a 2 year ordeal from the time the Endurance left South Georgia Island in 1914 for Antarctica! Fascinating!! ...more

This book is different than the other books by Adam Shoalts I have readI really wish Goodreads allowed for half stars as this is more a 3.5 than a 3. This book is different than the other books by Adam Shoalts I have read so far, as it is less about adventure, and more about unravelling the history of a legend in the remote wilderness of Labrador. There is adventure, but it takes a backseat in this one. It was also somewhat repetitive, rereading some of the historical accounts of the legend as he reasoned through possible explanations. Because of that, my imagination was not captured in the same way that I have come to expect from his previous books....more

The essays are grouped in sections related to different activities related to braiding sweetgrass. I picked this one up from her at a local Communities in Bloom event where she was the key note speaker. This book is a collection of essays on a variety of things - Canada Goose, The Plague, Hailey’s Comet, and Diet Dr. Pepper are just a few. I was expecting this book to be funny, not sure why, but it wasn’t. I was a bit disappointed in that, however, it was fascinating to get a glimpse into the author’s mind and he wove facts, stories, and his personal thoughts on the items he chose. Despite not being funny overall, it did keep my attention and sparked my curiosity to look up some of the things he talked about, like the largest ball of paint. ...more

I follow a hashtag he used as he started out on his solo canoe trip from Lake Erie that lead him to the Arctic. A scroll through Instagram revealed he has written books detailing some of his adventures, this one being one of them. From the start, this book captured my imagination! The scenery he described and the wildlife he encountered reminded me of why I am drawn north rather than south. As he mentioned places along his route, I dropped pins on my map on the phone to follow his journey, and learned a bit about the geography of the arctic region. I have never been that far north, but that is a dream of mine. I could relate to how he felt at the end of his journey - imagining what his email inbox looked like and returning the 24/7 connected, hectic life of today - and was sad to have reached the end. The afterword of this book sums up well why we need to protect our wild places, not just for the sake of wildlife, but because wild places restore us. I will definitely read more of Adam’s adventures!...more

I listened to this on my way to and from work but will also be reading her book and working through the reflections to help cement her wisdom in my mind for practice. I am aware that this is one side of the story, but also aware that this is his truth. I think anyone growing up like he did, in the lime light, would have a hard time - especially with the nature of the British tabloids, their near constant stories of the Monarchy, with seemingly no thought to the impact of their stories. Then add to that what he shared about the workings inside the Royal Family, and it is unreal! I was surprised by some the stories he tells that do not paint him in a positive light, but I appreciated hearing them. It is not often, in my limited experience, that you hear such things directly from a Royal, and I found it fascinating! The only thing that knocked it from a 5 star review for me is that seed of doubt I have from not hearing other sides of the story. ...more

While much of what was discussed rI listened to this as an audiobook, listening to most of it before the end of 2022. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! While much of what was discussed related to business and leadership, the infinite game mindset discussed applies to life in general. Simon contrasts the infinite mindset required to live life and perpetuate business (there are no “winners” at life and business, just cause driven) to the finite mindset (focused on immediate, shorter term time frame, often focusing on numbers) that can often lead to the demise of business. There are many great examples of the impact of both throughout this book and discusses the courage it takes to lead despite the pressures toward the finite. Well worth the listen!...more

Norris on many podcasts and always enjoy hearing him talk. So when I learned he had written this new book, I ordered it right away! The book is divided into two sections: Understanding Plants and Planting Palettes. The first covers some theory for the New Naturalism style of gardening, the second provides some guidelines to put the first into practice given certain conditions, and includes suggested plant lists for each layer of planting. I really enjoyed the drool-worthy photos throughout the book! They are beautiful and inspirational! They show many different ideas, from different parts of the world. Each garden seems to feature natives, near-natives and plants from other parts of the world that thrive in similar conditions and provide ecological benefit. Likewise, the plant suggestions supposedly do the same, however, all plant names are in latin, without common names present. This is my biggest hurdle with using this book...as a new gardener, I am not familiar with the latin names so I cannot picture any of the plants referenced. In order to make use of these lists, I will need to rely heavily on google. I will definitely use these lists as I continue on my quest to create an ecologically valuable landscape, and I really liked the matrix-structure-vignette approach to planting. While I really enjoyed this, I have knocked the score down to 3.5 from 4 due to the extra work it will take me to work through the plant lists. ...more
